The Official 2025 Boston Red Sox Thread

Last night was a travesty all around.

A starting pitcher blowing up (either mentally or on the field) in the 2nd inning not withstanding, no team (let alone the Red Sox) with a payroll north of $150 Million should ever be compelled to play a "bullpen" game by choice. If they do, they can't back the pitchers up with a bench & quad-A lineup?

Duran started. Why in the hellfires of Hades was he hitting 6th, followed by three (more or less) punch and Judy hitters at the bottom of the order? That's a free inning every three of no offense to the opposition. Not to mention Romy batting cleanup and Nate Eaton leading off. Surely Romy's 4 dingers and Eaton's career .280 OBP struck fear in Cleveland as well.

I'd be pi$$ed if I had tickets to that game, but by being at home, I was at least able to do something else. They had to set through it. C'est la vie. Seattle and NYY lost, but Toronto won.
He was 6th because he doesn't often face lefties and they faced a lefty. I said all day it was obvious Cora wasn't trying to win. He prioritized a rest game over winning. Didn't cost them in the standings.

I think he's worried about guys like Narvaez breaking down, otherwise he should have been the Dan Hurley.

Rumors are we can get Abreu back next week. That would be huge. They can then platoon Duran and Refsnyder in left. Romy has been pretty solid at 2B. Lowe needs to play every day at 1B. Eaton and Sogard are useful bench guys.

If there are 10 Million people in Southern New England, allow me be the 10,000,001st to second guess Cora. Boston has a travel day today and they do not have a playoff spot wrapped up by any stretch, particularly with Anthony out until late September.

Abreu will be huge, but he needs to stay on the field.

Good Question. Start May with a short leash.

I think Cora really messed up yesterday, but it is what it is.
Indeed. Rant over. Just needed to get it out of my system.

I thought Anthony let it slip it was a Grade 2 strain - read that somewhere....can't recall where. At any rate, Cora mentioned best case scenario is for Anthony to picture being ready for a potential ALCS game 1.

We desperately need Abreu back soon.

Some brutal losses the past two games. Wednesday was an embarrassment and first game against Arizona was full of highs and lows. Tolle did not pitch as well as last week but Sox clawed back to be down one only to give up four runs in eighth by Slaten.Duran needs to get on base in lead off spot. Roman is missed at lead off.

It is weird that Arizona is a nemesis team for this squad. Needed that win two days ago and took care of business against the As. With 17 games left, my pre-season bet of Over 86.5 games looks pretty good. With Crochet, Giolito and Bello I do think this team can do damage in the post-season, but they have to get Abreu back soon and hope for Anthony.

That was a Christmas in September early surprise last night.

Unfortunate loss today though. Harrison was excellent when he got in.

Can't seem to complete the sweep of the inferior team.

Chapman was due to not have it at some point.

Yeah, rather have it now than say trying to close out an LCS game four and have him spit the bit then.

Without a healthy Roman Anthony, this team may work their way out of the playoffs. If they do make the playoffs without Anthony, they will be quickly swept.

That's an exaggeration. Abreu should be back tomorrow. With Crochet, Giolitto, Bello and now Early looking great, and the best bullpen ERA in MLB, they can beat anybody. They are struggling horribly with RISP right now, but that switch can flip in an instant.

Weissart has allowed 7 of 27 inherited runners to score which is a lower % than the Red Sox as a whole, but last night felt like a gut punch. Particularly when Early was dealing with only 80 pitches thrown.

I can't blame him when the team had bases loaded and no outs and stranded all three. That can't happen. The offense let Early down.

Trying to be optimistic, but I’m worried that even if they hold onto a playoff spot, it’ll be a quick exit. Bats are going to have to come to life

I don't have any delusions that the Red Sox are true contenders, but they can get through and have a chance in the ALDS if they can right the offense. Pitching carries the day, but should it be too much to ask for 4 runs and a chance to bury one of the worst teams in MLB?

Be that as it may, stand pat or fall out of the race this year, 2026 comes with it some pretty lofty expectations.

I can blame Cora.

The constant stranding of RISP, especially with bases loaded and no or 1 out, is maddending. That said, two big wins for the Sox. They need it because Cleveland is playing incredible baseball. 10 wins in a row now. They are only one game behind Detroit and have tied Houston in the Wild Card. Boston is up 1 game on both of them. Yanks are now within 2 of the Jays and Houston is within 2 of Seattle. MLB has to be thrilled with this penant race. Nobody in the AL has clinched anything. 4 spots are taken in the NL including all the division winners.

Huge start from Harrison last night. He's looking like a really nice young pitcher. Need Connor Early to be good today, but Tampa's starter is meh, so hopefully the offense can get untracked. He's RH so Abreu should be back today. Keep winning.

Nice to see Yoshida with hit in 9th along with dependable Story. Need good outing from Early since Chapman may not be available.

I am not one of the "fire Cora" people. I am now all in on firing the third base coach. He seems to get it wrong almost every time. This team is giving away far too many outs on the basepaths. That absolutely should have been a win yesterday.

What a great W last night. Hoping to emulate tonight. Go Sox!

Need tonight just as much as they needed it last night!

I was listening on the radio on the way back from soccer practice when the Sox nearly blew scoring their first run. Yoshida doubles with no one out. Strike out, ground out to short. How is a professional Major League hitter not able to hit the ball to the right side? Luckily Lowe (who is hardly hitting his weight) was able to bail Romy and Rafaela out.

Lowe credited Bregman was some adjustments to his swing. Looked better at the plate. Yoshida is quietly hitting 10 for his last 24. No power, but he's hitting well. Abreu in RF and Rafaella in center is elite defensively. Huge clutch double from Narv last night. Bullpen was stellar.

Another big game tonight, with the War Pig on the mound. Bats have to step up and for the love of God, can they please stop making outs on the basepaths?

How about that Crochet? I really like having a lefty ace. Tolle was less than impressive in the 9th last night, but he is young, super inexperienced, and projected to be a starter next season. He really can't be in a better position than learning from a similar type pitcher Crochet who also throws from the same side.

The 'Sox are now over their preseason win projection with 4 games to go, their magic number is 1, and they can clinch before 1st pitch tonight in Toronto if Houston loses out West this afternoon. After a three year drought, just making the playoffs is a success for Boston, particularly if Roman Anthony cannot make it back.

Recovery from an oblique is 4-6 weeks. He has just started week 4 (Sept. 3) and Breslow said he is not close to baseball activities.

That said, the Wild Card round is best of 3 and the Red Sox have the horses on the mound to get to the ALDS.

Nice win by Boston in first game of WC. Crochet looked great retiring 17 straight batters. Chapman had to work but didn't give up a run with bases loaded and no outs in the ninth. Hats off to Cora for sticking with Yoshida even though he didn't start. Yoshida has been hot the past two weeks.

I love playoff baseball and watching games in the afternoon and early evening. Most games were close except for the Dodgers who hit 5 HRs against Cincy.
