@Deepster Hicks is 28. He's a failed starter who looks good a middle reliever (which Boston needs). Harrison isn't "far" he was a top prospect who has struggled since being called up last year, but then so did Crochet in Chicago in 2023.

Yoshida has produced in 2+ years what Devers does in an average year. Same with Story in 3+ years. Yoshida isn't fast and has one of the poorest arms so he is a a well below averaged Dan Hurley.
They're not winning a world series this year, so who cares if Bregman is back because he is opting out and leaving town. He loves Cora, but he is at the beginning of the 2nd half of his career and he wants playoffs and chances at the WS, which isn't happening anytime soon. Chapman, Wilson and potentially Duran are the next to go, and probably won't be able to get out from Story's and Yoshida's bad contracts in those deals unless they take no high end prospects in those deals.
Finally, Boston is no longer a prime destination for free agents. Remember, Bregman kind of ended up in Boston by process of elimination. I get Ortiz's comments, but he wasn't moved asked to move twice and he has talked about how becoming a full time Dan Hurley was a big change mentally for him in his approach and it took some time to accept it and he had to play first in some games of the World Series if he wanted to play at all.

Exactly, you’re spot on. As a Sox fan, we’re operating like a mid-market team. Incredibly disappointing

You're entitled to these opinions. But they aren't facts.

1. Yoshida hasn't been healthy. When healthy his production has been quite good. Not Devers good, but good.
2. Story - same as above. Plays strong defense and is a solid contributor when he's not hurt.
3. Bregman was begging to come to Boston. He loves Fenway and Cora. The reason it took so long to sign him is because it meant moving Devers to Dan Hurley and he's such a crybaby they weren't sure he'd be willing. I think the Sox also see Mayer as a third baseman long term and there are some very good shortstops coming up.
4. Sox aren't going to be net sellers at the deadline unless they collapse. They do have a surplus of outfielders. So maybe someone is moved to shore up weakness elsewhere, first base, pitching, backup catcher. I think this lets them keep Duran.

My sense of this is that the Abreu, Bregman and Casas injuries accelerated the youth movement that was always coming. Now the choice is to send those guys back or create roster flexibility that allows them to get regular at bats. They will sink or swim with mostly young position players and starters.

IF they were serious about contending you would have eaten some money on Raffy's deal and gotten a better return. Or, I don't know, called another team or two because that return is awful and matches what they've done when dumping Mookie and Sale.

Harrison WAS a top prospect but he's going to likely become a reliever as he only has 1 pitch worth a damn. Maybe Bailey can get get some kind of secondary offering out of him, but SF is pretty solid on the pitching dev side and they didn't do it.

Hicks sucks. And the other guys are lottery tickets not above A+ ball. That's great that Tibbs is another LF OF, just what we need.

I liked what Tibbs could do when I watched Florida State against UConn last year. But I have read that there are doubts about his swing at the MLB level.

Yoshida is a weak slugging base clogger with a Johnny Damon like arm for a corner outfielder. For a Dan Hurley, he is below the league average.
Story is hitting .235 and may strike out 200 times this season.
Bregman has been great and better than I thought he would be but he's going to go after one season unless he gets the $250 million they just saved trading Devers. It may cost more than that on a guy who is 3 years older than Devers. Still, Bregman wants to win, and that still may not be enough so I'd bet if he's healthy he walks and never looks back.
If Breslow is smart, than they should be selling (Chapman, Wilson and Bregman) at the deadline because they are at least 3-4 years away from having a chance to contend and could maybe speed that up if they use these guys to get some actual good young pitching unlike in the Devers deal.
 
As a fan, all I can see is aimless, money driven decisions. They sold off arguably their most productive offensive player for a grab bag of garbage pitching. Somebody that wants to win rather than milk the brand needs to own the franchise.

With a healthy shoulder, Yoshida actually has some pop. But he's an elite contact hitter, which a team like the Yankees could really use right now.
Story had the worst slump of his career, but he's out of it now and mashing.
They aren't selling, although they could package an outfielder and pitcher for someone like Rhys Hoskins. They have so much depth those moves are easy now.
This team is a contender, right now in 2025. 3-4 years away are you on acid? If Houck and Duran were playing to what they did last year this team would have the 2nd best record in the AL.

Bello has indeed been much better in his last two outings, but it was Giolito who pitched in Seattle last night ;)

Damn you are right. But still, encouraging. The whole staff is clicking right now. Sox are 4th in runs scored in all of MLB. Timely hitting has been an issue, but it's really the only reason they aren't closer to 1st in all of MLB. Pitching has been the issue.

Hicks has strong numbers as a 2 inning relief pitcher, bad numbers as a starter. I think he can help in a relief role. If Harrison can lock down a starting role, you can trade Walker Buehler and the staff starts to look quite good.

Reading clips from yesterday's presser, it frees up the money they had on Devers to go after some big names with big contracts.

Defense is also a big issue, most errors in the league. Timely hitting and striking out (3rd most strikeouts in the league) are hurting the offense in a big way, and losing your best run producer won’t help. I want to be as optimistic as you are, but I’m struggling to believe that an offense of Romy, Ref, Toro and a bunch of rookies will be able to keep this up consistently

Story is mashing? He's hitting .232, is on pace to strikeout around 200 times on the season and has a -9.0 WAR batting for his position.

Devers got out to a historically bad slump and at least got his average up over .270 and still on pace to hit 30+ homeruns.

Harrison may end up being a decent piece, but the other 3 don't project as much.

The bottom line is Henry and the GM did not want to give Devers the contract in the first place but felt the pressure after letting Betts go for nothing via trade and letting Xander walk There have been several articles about how poorly Devers was treated by management behind the scenes and the way they talked about him. Enjoy Anthony while you can, because if he turns into the star everyone thinks he will be, he'll be wearing Dodger blue in about 7 years unless Henry sells the team.
 
Hearing lots of chatter about the timing of Devers trade, the money the Sox ownership freed up and the money they just spent on the record breaking 200m contract for Florian Wirtz on Liverpool FC (also owned by Henry).

Some feel that the Sox are heading to an average/below average period and Liverpool is on the rise so the money (and moves) follow that trend.

Do you follow the team? Story is hitting .296 in June with 2 HR and 13 RBI. Still striking out too much.

I agree they didn't want to give Devers that contract. Now they are out of it. Meanwhile the actual players seem to think losing Devers is no big deal. It seems he didn't have a lot of fans in the clubhouse. My view of him is that he's simple. Probably an IQ around 85. Ortiz tried to help him. I'm not worried about Anthony or trading aging stars away. They should have traded Xander but Sox fans are so needlessly emotional about those things that they lost him for nothing. I have believed for decades that the MLB union contract results in many players who should be DFA taking up roster spots while better players are in the minors. It's utterly broken. The days of Rice, Yaz and Pedroia being on one team their whole careers is over.

Hicks has a strong track record as a reliever, which is what he will be doing. He was a lousy starter. He can help.

According to those in this thread that isn't how it works. As the money ultimately comes from (or goes to) Henry's pockets I believe that there could be something to this but.......

Yeah, I don't really know either way.

Even if the money doesn't actually move in a coordinated way, it could be safe to say his interest and energy may be focused more on one than the other.
 
The level of cope from fans in this thread is 100x better than I expected. Trying to spin this as good is hilarious
