The Bracket

As of the February 29 reveal shown below, LSU was the #9 seed. Lost to SC last weekend. They were most likely ranked 8/9 by the committee, but the committee can't place them opposite #1 South Carolina as they are in the same conference. So, it was either move LSU up to #7 or down to #10. Same thing happened one year ago.

That's not how it works. They rank the teams first, then place them in the bracket. If they're ranked 9th, then they are moved to different region from SC, but they still are ranked 9th.

Shocked that Columbia made it, after losing decisively to Princeton. But their reaction to their name revealed live on ESPN was as genuine and euphoric as any I've ever seen. Their G/F Hsu is the real deal and it's nice to see a smaller program with a great season get selected over the 7th best Big 5 conference team. Good for them, just really SUCKS they have to play Vandy in the play-in game who is a great story on their own.
Columbia played really well down the stretch, including beating Princeton in the regular season.

They probably took the spot away from Miami...and even as an ACC member, I couldn't be more pleased for the Lions to get into the tourney for the first time...ever!!

I thought Columbia was even better last year when Kaitlyn (sp) Davis, now with JuJu Watkins at USC, was on the the LIons. But they've rebounded well.

BTW. Coach Megan Griffith of Columbia will play teams back to back coached by former UConn players: Princeton (Carla Berube) and now Vandy (Shea Ralph). Should be fun.

I think you understood my point. Bottom line is LSU got bumped down to avoid being in fellow SEC foe South Carolina's bracket.

Did the womens' committee release its 1-68 rankings? The men's committee did.

In the committee terminology, "bumped down" means moved down a seed line. That did not happen here.
If they were ranked 8th, they would've been a 2 seed.
Since they are a 3 seed we know they were ranked 9th-12th. The committee will try to use the S-curve, but it is free to move teams within a seed line for various reasons. It is not considered "moving down."

Just to elaborate on this, it's my understanding that the "bump" up or down one seed line can only happen from the 5 seed line on down.

In the top 4 seed lines, as you describe, teams can be moved across regions but not up or down a seed line.

Columbia has no business being in this tournament.

Does the forum every do a contest or have a group where they fill out brackets?

Regardless, now that the bracket is out, any sleeper picks or teams you really like as Cinderalla's or advancing further than most ppl expect

I would sure love to see this but I haven't yet. The men's committee has been releasing its 1-68 ranking for at least a couple years now.

Some interesting storylines in the Raleigh sub-regional:

-- Wes Moore and NC State open with Chattanooga, where Moore coached for 15 seasons before taking the NC State job

-- In a possible second round game, Kellie Harper with a potential revenge game against the program that fired her after 4 mediocre seasons, paving the way for Wes Moore to restore luster to a sleeping giant

They do that kind of thing. Rutgers had a few of those set-ups in history, as well, and I caught a couple others as they were announcing the brackets, although I don't remember them off-hand.

Texas A&M and Nebraska play each other in both the men's and women's tourney. Old Big 12 Foes.

Agreed. I think South Carolina has far and away the easiest bracket. Which is their reward for being the #1 overall, of course.

For SC, Notre Dame is red hot, though I don’t think they match up well with SC, particularly without Watson. Oregon State could provide a challenge as a 3, but I’m not fully sold. I don’t love facing UNC in the second round if I’m SC. Oklahoma/Indiana aren’t threatening though for Sweet 16, particularly if Holmes is out. They avoid UCONN in Albany too, so it’s an ideal draw.

I think USC got a great draw as well. They likely get a Kitley-less VT in the Sweet 16 (or Baylor who has been trending down), and the Elite 8 is either a streaky OSU team or a UCONN team who hasn’t beat anyone notable this year. I wouldn’t count out Duke as a dark horse either.

Iowa got a brutal draw. Kansas State is easily the hardest 4 seed for them to match with and playing the winner of LSU/UCLA is brutal. They could make it to Cleveland still but it’s a very tough path.

I will say I am stunned the committee didn’t put UCONN in Albany nor OSU in Portland. Fortunately I think both locations will draw well and we’ll see teams play on neutral courts which I’m a fan of.

Texas’s regional will be fun to see. Stanford/Iowa State will potentially be a great second round matchup with Brink/Cooks.

Believe Kellie was an assistant coach under Wes at Chattanooga too.
Has Mimi Collins played LVs since transferring after freshman season?

IA’s regional is so much harder than SC’s
A friend and I joked it's the equivalent of the World Cup of Soccer's pool of death. It's also quite the petty revenge tour if you look at some of the potential match ups.

Oh yeah...I forgot about the Mimi Collins connection.

Maybe I'm naive but as a South Carolina fan, I'm more worried about Oregon State than Notre Dame. I think Notre Dame is a horrible matchup and we would absolutely dominate the paint. A rematch of Hidalgo vs Fulwiley would be a fun game within the game, though.
