Lakatos was hired away to coach at Georgia. Cersosimo didn't do much but I heard his presence was more political than anything.

Ambrose, Orlando and Moorhead have done fantastically. Ambrose was a pretty big surprise. He beat us like a drum 4 years ago.

Moorhead and Orlando weren't interested because I am sure they knew Randy was in.

Don't forget Ambrose brought Towson to their first ever FCS Championship game in his second season and Andrew Breiner is highly thought of after what he's done at Fordham.
 
If Bob Diaco had been willing to go into this upcoming season accepting that there were thongs he needed to improve upon, accepting a well established veteran as offensive coordinator (which would have made his job easier on a few levels), agreed to the professional training he was asked to take (I'm 56 and on occasion my employer sends me to professional training courses. It doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing, it is merely a means of keeping me up to date with many things and improving in areas where that would be helpful), his return for 2017 would have made a lot of sense.

As we would have gone into 2017 with BD believing he was doing nothing wrong and that there was nothing to be improved upon, the program would have been a mess beyond Rutgers proportions in twelve months.

Now there's something to be proud of -- you wanted the guy gone, he left and we collapsed. And yet you're here thinking your opinons have credibility?

Forget Edsall's apology -- if you were a good person you'd apologize to the rest of us for having thought the program was going to get better post-Edsall before you continued to post here.
 
It was crazy to want him gone. But don't think for a second that he wasn't replaceable just because we did a $h!++y job replacing him.

Of course he was replaceable. No one is irreplaceable. Had we lost Calhoun in '98, the odds were good if we brought in Coach K the success would continue.

It's not a question of whether someone is irreplaceable or not -- it's a question of how likely you are to find someone who would do as good or better a job. Six years in, logic would suggest that it wasn't nearly as easy as those who wanted him gone thought.

Not being content with 8-5 has nothing to do with firing someone for 8-5.

When UConn regularly sells out 80,000-100,000+ seat stadiums, competes with national championship contenders regularly, and has boosters with unlimited checkbooks, then we can start comparing our behavior to Nebraska, LSU, and Georgia.

At UConn we should set high standards, and have lofty goals. But 8-5 at UConn isn't a failure in the same way it is at Georgia, LSU, or Nebraska.

And if UConn were to fire a coach for going 8-5, you can forget about ever finding the coach that would start the generations-long process of turning UConn into a Georgia, LSU, or Nebraska.

I'm glad you don't work for me. Let's fire anyone who is pretty good but not great. No, you fire C players, develop your B players, all while retaining/recruiting A players.

Great programs bring 5 to 8 thousand fans to road games. We don't bring 500 even when we play in driving distance.

Great programs have more than 60k fans show up at games even when they're having bad years. We don't even have those numbers in our dreams.

Great programs are in conferences that people care about.

Great programs, mostly, are in areas that produce far more top level talent than Connecticut (and the Northeast is general) do.

Great programs don't compete with 3 NFL teams in their market.

Great programs have a history, that makes high school coaches proud when they get to brag a kid goes there and cause them to favor those schools.

Do I need to go on? I'm sick and tired of folks thinking that college football is like college basketball and it's that easy to compete on the highest level, and I'm sick and tired of folks thinking that if you're just patient enough a football version of Jim and Geno is going to show up soon.

While we never would have had the state support to go I-A without the success of our basketball programs, that success may also be the papercut that bleeds the football program to death because we have too many fans refusing to accept the time, patience and effort it is going to take to be a perennial Top 25 level program.

I'm happy with 8-5 in the short term. If next season or 2018 we're 8-5 I'd be ecstatic. If in 2025 we haven't eclipsed 8-5 I wouldn't be. The point is you have to view hiring Edsall from the perspective of where we currently are and what the process is to be able to aim for greatness. He's someone who can build us back to respectability and position the program to be taken over by someone who we could expect to win 10 games every year. Right now aiming for greatness is a great thought, and we should, but it's not a realistic short-term goal. UConn football has become a laughing stock under P and BD. P was so obviously past his time and drove the program downward into subpar status, and then BD came in and turned us into a sideshow. The Civil Conflict nonsense made us the butt of national media jokes, his befuddling schemes and subsequent answers in the media made you seriously wonder if he was in touch with reality. As it stands now, the college football world views UConn football as a joke. Under Randy we were viewed as "too new" or "too young" to be taken seriously, but we were winning games, beating a few good programs, consistently making bowls, and regularly placing multiple guys in the NFL. The latter is a hell of a lot better place to be than we are, and it's also a realistic short-term goal. So, let's realistically shoot to be "pretty good" over the next few years, then see if we can move up to being great.

No actually I don't. My business keeps growing because we have people who want to be great and build a great company.

You don't seem to understand. Im really well aware of how they build it over years - get a nut sack - have high expectations - those expectations don't need to come to fruition overnight.

II guys have a reading comprehension problem - please show me where I said or indicated that that successs has to come over night. Why people can't read clearly is beyond me.

Have greater expectations than 8-5 if that's where you want this program enjoy it. I'm sure the guys at UL and UH aspired to be 8-5.

You don't get it.
