Fagnano had a very good year. He is by no means a great QB, but his numbers speak to themselves as him having played far, far more than competently. If Welliver is better than him, great. But I’d be really surprised if that was where the smart money is.
I’m pleased to hear Joe is back. I wasn’t a Fagnano guy. Unimpressed with his play which was admittedly limited in 2023 and I saw him play at Maine and thought he was nothing special. But last year he really stepped up. Made plays in big moments. Didn’t turn it over. He is not ever getting confused with Jalen Hurts, but he is a solid college quarterback. That’s something we haven’t had in quite a while.

As much fun as it is having a good football team, it’s even better that they seem to be a good group of guys. For example, not only did Skyler Bell return; he’s a big hockey fan! I love that!

To show how fickle fans can be, Philly fans were questioning the big contract Hurts got after last year. The lesson, chill.

What’s interesting to me is that HCJM seems to prefer a dual threat. Let’s see the progression each of the 4 made and see if we can cheer for the kids on the field, rather than against them.

Any of you recruit evaluators care to opine about Wellivers "dual threatness"? Can he take off and run, will he have run first plays ala Hurts, Josh Allen and Jayden Daniels

Asking because I don't know.

His reputation and scouting is pro style, not dual threat. He has the height to deliver the ball over a dynamic pocket.

It was literally hit and miss. When the pass was thrown in stride it was a thing of beauty. But there were plenty of blown passes AND also dropped balls on well thown balls. Here's hoping a full offseason of continuity improves timing and rhythm between QB and the WR corps. That is why I am confident Sammis' schemes were good and it wasn't just an uptick in talent.
This is who JF is. All the way back to when he started at Maine. He is maddeningly inconsistent. He will make a few transcendent plays and then throw some 5 yard lasers that are uncatchable.

He will limit turnovers, manage the game, and sometimes shine. He is a solid FBS quarterback and I would love to have him leading the team again for one more year.

These are the posts I find incredible on this forum. IF JF is "maddeningly" inconsistent, what do we call every other QB that has come through here post DO? Does he miss some throws? Who doesn't?

I'd think given how he took a listless offense against UAB and turned a certain loss into a win, and rallying the team back in 4th quarter against Temple after he and the team struggled in that game, that we would collectively think that we have a GUY here who is a net positive. A guy whose other teams starter isn't automatically better than our guy.

At least you called him a solid FBS QB, that is more than what others call him.

If 1 thing is clear, it's we shouldn't assume a transfer from Penn State or Wisconsin or pick your P5 school, that hasn't seen the field is automatically better than a guy that put up numbers in FCS. There is a reason FCS schools upset FBS and P5 schools. There is or was major talent at that level.

To answer your question, we would call almost every other post-Orlovsky QB who has come through here awful, horrible, attrocious, or something similar. It's truly impressive how horrendous our QB play has been for the better part of two decades. We've made it look like moving the ball through the air is a herculean task.

Seeing 3 people in this thread looking forward to Welliver and yet getting his first name wrong is just to funny. Typical Boneyard.
Good chance autocorrect changed his name.

I dunno what planet you're on but I've been one of the biggest JF defenders on this board. I was calling for a Joe Fagnano redemption thread when others around here were still saying he was the worst quarterback in program history.

As a Maine fan I've watched this kid forever. I believe he should be our starter next year. But realistic expectations are in order.

Joe offers competency+. He sould gel with OC Sammis even more this year, hope the new QB coach is a value added guy. More importantly, the support around him on offense should be even better this year, from the line to the receivers, and while Robinson was a loss, a return to form by Rosa would give us a nice 3 back rotation. WE should be able to move the ball pretty well in 25, we are due for a healthy year from our starting QB. And the wild card is Welliver. Can he win the job? If he can beat out JF and NE, we'd really have something. Exciting stuff.

In a nutshell, with a good year, Joey meatballs can go down as one of the best QB's we ever had.

Yeah. He's not being drafted in the 7th round but he's alright for us.

Unless JF pulls up lame in camp he's got to be the starter. If Evers finds a way to turn it around, great but JF has proven himself

I'm hopeful that the Evers that we saw last year was less than 100% this year and that next year, he is more the player that we all thought we were getting. That still might not be enough to win the starting job though.

I agree with this. There is definitely a shortage of NFL type arms in CF. Just look at the playoffs this year. Most got by with good smart game managers who can either pull it down or make a throw. Reminds me of our guy,JF. I’m happy just finding a way to win.

What are realistic expectations? 2024 he was 18th in passing yards per completion and 15th in whatever passing efficiency in NCAA (above Quinn Ewers of Texas). Somehow this doesn't pass the "what was I thinking when watching JF play test" (not that I'm any more than a casual fan).

Was it the lack of volume (101st in passing yards per game), did the FCS game skew his stats that much that doesn't make me think of JF as top 20 NCAA passer?

Can he be top 20 efficiency with 250 yards per game rather than 163?
