Tarris Reed | Page 3 | The Boneyard

Tarris Reed

The thing to remember is this about Tarris, Hurley and all of the coaching staff wanted him and went out and got him. I don’t believe I’m going to second guess their judgement of his current ability to help the team or his future performance potential. They could be wrong of course and may have gotten not the best guy they should have but who wants to bet against them? Our staff is the best there is. It’s like this every year where by about mid a December we have a pretty good idea though.

Not sure if this was shared yet but this YT offers 25+ minutes of what Tarris can do, and what UM didn’t do. What he can do:

Use both hands effectively, with great touch from both sides.

Hit a runner with touch

Overpower his defender on the block

Put it in the hoop in traffic, knows how to use ball English around rim

Explode to the rim with force

Great feet for his size, quick first step

Can put the ball on the floor and dribble for his size

He does a nice job of cutting and finding space in the paint off movement, unfortunately the stagnancy of the perimeter UM offense and inability to see an open man and make a quick entry pass is just bad. They were just so poorly coached.

Overall, my feelings are that a kid like this likely just felt lost in their jaloppy of an offense, which was discombobulated freelancing. Players had no feel for where one another were, entirely reactive.

I could see titanic upside for him, coming out of a bottom 5% coaching unit into a top 1%. He’s that skilled for his size.

I certainly don’t want to over-compare to SJ, but the raw skills of TR are so much better. And size is so much of a better fit for the BE. If you watch the same tape of SJ, 95% of his highlights were a product of the sets where he has a free pass down the lane for a dunk. Whereas Tarris had to earn his buckets. I honestly don’t know what SJ does better at any phase of the game, other than knowing the system, which could be enough to start. I just cannot see a world where Reed isn’t our starting center by mid season, with a minutes distribution that leans heavier and heavier to him.

Nice post, thanks. If he develops quickly he might be a portal one and done!! Hope not hope so Happy not happy

His highlights make him look like he’ll be a big contributor this season. Just don’t watch the full game tapes.

There is a ton of talent here that is untapped. A lot of people thought Tarris was not the right choice and that thread will be interesting to revisit when Tarris is a stud and those others are not. Dude is going to be a big-time player in our system and with our coaching.

Hear yeah - plenty of ringling brothers stuff on the full tape. Kid just needs to be polished up.

What I mostly saw was stuff that can be fixed with good coaching. Plenty of touch, size, athleticism, and a high baseline skillset to build off of. Basically, he tries to do too much on offense and needs to focus on team defensive fundamentals. Hurley and co. will coach that up.

Agree. Most of us remember how a recent FF MOP at the center position struggled at certain parts of his game only to absolutely master said parts of his game a relstively short time later. I expect big things from Tarris right away.

We have been spoiled by Adama's dominant offensive game and Donovan's impact defensively. Tarris will probably not be at either's level but will benefit from the player development/coaching/SnC Program that UConn will provide. I expect him to be rock solid at the 5 and an improved version of the Michigan version of Tarris.

Samson and Tarris will give provide us with another strong 40 minutes at the 5.

I think Tarris can do some things neither DC or Adama could do. Key here is just going to be expunging the bad habits, getting him as many easy baskets as tough so he knows he doesn’t have to do too much. Getting him set up to play great defense and rebound. I did notice on his tape he didn’t quite hit the boards as hard as you’d like. That has to be a non negotiable.

There is no reason a guy like him doesn’t lead the league in rebounds, he’s that stout and long.

.-.
The Sleepers guys called him an NBA body with a grade school mind, based on poor positioning, poor shot selection, poor defensive decision-making, etc.; implying he's a head case. But Danny can tell the difference between a head case and a poorly-coached diamond in the rough, who's big, quick, coordinated, and eager to learn--can't wait to see the results. Taller than Sanogo, same 7'3" wingspan.

Agree.

Luckily, we just so happen to have one of the (if not THE) best college coaches for rebounding in the country in Tom Moore. So I expect his rebounding to improve substantially.

Excited to see Tarris in a UConn uniform and in the UConn system.

All the negatives sound like a guy playing for a bad coach, with no system being forced to freestyle because of no team play. He’s now in the polar opposite universe and I expect him to flourish.

Wasn’t he ranked higher than DC coming out of HS?

He's not a head case, he's just undisciplined and I assume undercoached. The decision making, positioning, shot selection are all a function of not being made to do understand and do those things. Hurley and gang will sit you down if your mind isn't connected with your body.

You get what you accept. I'm betting past coaches all saw the same things we've all seen and didn't bother to hold his feet to the fire when it came to all the discipline and game smarts stuff. They saw his physical plant and potential and that was good enough for them.

Well put, definitely not a head case. I actually think he’s a bright and well spoken kid who had zero structure in place to understand how to make good decisions. As mentioned earlier, the UM guard play was a total clusterf8ck.

I always refer back to his freshman year team - Dickinson and the 11th and 15th picks and they couldn’t make the NCAA tournament. It would almost seem hard to do that.

To answer a question, he was generally a top 35 kid, cusp burger boy, on3 had as high as 29. He had offers from many of the top big 10 schools and Kansas. He’s built like a brick sh8thouse and can move, and has touch. Lot to like here and a fun experiment to watch the staff take into the lab.

Even with all the bad habits and bad coaching last season he averaged 7.2 rebounds a game in 26.6 minutes per game. In Adama's last season here he averaged 7.7 rebounds in the exact same 26.6 minutes per game. So I expect Reed to be a really good rebounder for the Huskies.
