No, people lost their minds when you said he's a better version of Sanogo. And rightfully so
Did I say better or could be better?

EDIT:

"I think he’ll be a better version of Sanogo due to his rim protection and quick first step. Don’t shoot the messenger!"

Don’t think Adama or Andre are comps. Physically closer to Andre. Tarris’s lower half is like a DL, he’s got two redwoods for legs. Andre was a tick taller and weighed 278 at the combine, big boy. Unlike Andre he’s not just brute force, not quite the dancing bear that Adama is. Adama is really one of a kind with the soccer background, likely the best combination of low post footwork and hands we’ve seen at UConn for a big. Tarris kinda falls in between the two. I feel great about his offensive potential, the question will be what kind of rim presence he will provide defensively. That coulf be the biggest adjustment year over year we have going in, and really curious to how DH works through it.
What I’ve seen of him shows a guy with good instinct and desire for rim protection. Further development of his anticipation and discipline should make him a force. Don’t have much to go on to evaluate as a 1:1 defender

Super excited for this kid, even more so after hearing him interviewed. He sounds like a really bright kid. He strikes me as incredibly talented and a physical specimen, so now will be fun to watch what this staff can do with him once they take him into the lab, remove the bad habits (turnovers) and have him focus on his strengths. He’s also what I’d consider the key piece in making a run for the NC, perhaps the most important variable.

Maybe he should have just said a "taller Sanogo." That seems more realistic.

He's probably 18 months away from developing Sanogo's skills and dependability, if he ever does, and probably won't match Sanogo's strength. But he has his own strengths, and will be very very good for us.

the offense improvements can be more or less counted on, but the more important thing is how much defense he can play. he was pretty decent as a post defender, but the real challenge is the more feel dependent things like playing drop coverage and anticipating plays, how teams try to attack the defense and attack him. key area to watch.

The thing to remember is this about Tarris, Hurley and all of the coaching staff wanted him and went out and got him. I don’t believe I’m going to second guess their judgement of his current ability to help the team or his future performance potential. They could be wrong of course and may have gotten not the best guy they should have but who wants to bet against them? Our staff is the best there is. It’s like this every year where by about mid a December we have a pretty good idea though.

Not sure if this was shared yet but this YT offers 25+ minutes of what Tarris can do, and what UM didn’t do. What he can do:

Use both hands effectively, with great touch from both sides.

Hit a runner with touch

Overpower his defender on the block

Put it in the hoop in traffic, knows how to use ball English around rim

Explode to the rim with force

Great feet for his size, quick first step

Can put the ball on the floor and dribble for his size

He does a nice job of cutting and finding space in the paint off movement, unfortunately the stagnancy of the perimeter UM offense and inability to see an open man and make a quick entry pass is just bad. They were just so poorly coached.

Overall, my feelings are that a kid like this likely just felt lost in their jaloppy of an offense, which was discombobulated freelancing. Players had no feel for where one another were, entirely reactive.

I could see titanic upside for him, coming out of a bottom 5% coaching unit into a top 1%. He’s that skilled for his size.

I certainly don’t want to over-compare to SJ, but the raw skills of TR are so much better. And size is so much of a better fit for the BE. If you watch the same tape of SJ, 95% of his highlights were a product of the sets where he has a free pass down the lane for a dunk. Whereas Tarris had to earn his buckets. I honestly don’t know what SJ does better at any phase of the game, other than knowing the system, which could be enough to start. I just cannot see a world where Reed isn’t our starting center by mid season, with a minutes distribution that leans heavier and heavier to him.

His highlights make him look like he’ll be a big contributor this season. Just don’t watch the full game tapes.

There is a ton of talent here that is untapped. A lot of people thought Tarris was not the right choice and that thread will be interesting to revisit when Tarris is a stud and those others are not. Dude is going to be a big-time player in our system and with our coaching.
