Syracuse post game thread

You can not design a more “don’t play scared to lose” situation than we are in. We aren’t in a conference. We aren’t in the P4. And we have everything to gain with these types of wins and not much at all to lose. Instead of a gauntlet of a schedule, we have like 3-4 games where we should just let it fly.

And yet they are still petrified to coach to win in these situations. And quite frankly on offense they are petrified to make the plays necessary.

As an Independent in this era of rising costs and the P2 trying hard to choke everyone out we shouldn’t live to fight another day because there may not be one.

We basically played entire second half hoping they would never make a play. The drive/play calling after the k terception was particularly painful as well as after missed FG. They basically were like a boxer on their last legs about 7 different times and we let thme off the hook without the knockout.

Even though that loss was a bit of a heartbreaker, game was an instant classic. I can never be too upset about endings like this, absolute cinema
First off it was beyond a heartbreaker. Secondly, I’m sick of being in “instant classics” with Syracuse and being on the wrong end of them. Between this and MSG, I’m good. (Sorry if posted before, I’m not reading the first 200 posts)

Amen. Sorry guys, the way Syracuse played, we should have won that game by 20. Our offense dropped the ball, figuratively and literally. We had them booing their team in their own house. We let them hang around when we should have buried them.

If in the 4th, we were only going to throw off play action, I would rather see Evers in the game. We needed first downs and having a QB who could tuck it and keep the chains moving a few times is all we needed. Maybe a tough spot to put him in, but he's a veteran too. Should be able to come in and close the game.
Exactly. Joe does not like to run. It’s zippin’ it Nolan Ryan style or bust

This was a game to win and UConn coaching staff gave it away with playing not to lose and did just that.

I don't think that's true. We were ahead and abandoned the running game. And Brown had (what) two carries in the second half? And running the ball would have moved the clock. Our play calling slowed the game down.

This is one game where playing not to lose. --- running the ball, probably gets us the W.

I don't agree on this one. This was complete coaching malpractice.

Sitting back on miniscule 11 point lead is a shocking decision.
Sitting on the lead would mean running. We should have done more running in the third and forth quarters.

After the 2ND half field goal

3 and out R, P, P

3 and out P, R, P

5 and out P, R, P, P

6 and out P, R, P, R, P, P

4TH Quarter

3 and out P, R, P

3 and out P, R, P

After this we started favoring the run. We were not sitting on the ball or playing to not to lose. We ran 7 times, we threw 15 times. We were throwing and stopping the clock.

Too much complacency and ineffective drives.

A couple times we threw on third and short and it didn’t work.

We were in 4 down territory and a decent run would have set up 4th and short, but they threw deep?!?. There were so many times I was saying “what are we doing?”

We are not that good. Too bad, needed a scalp like this.
No offense but this is a stupid post . Like it or not Syracuse is a power 4 conference team with at least 10 times the resources UConn has. That being said we are closing the gap big time

From a football guy...albeit one not invested in UConn...what a game ! The most cardiac final minute of regulation that I can remember....Technically a loss...but UConn did a terrific job...I wish that both teams could get a W for this one...they played equally....Good job, Huskies.

This one hurt. You just knew once we couldn’t move the ball in the 2H they were going to come back. Our defense was left hanging on the field for far too long.

Play calling aside, because that was awful, key play makers failed to make the plays that were actually good play calls. Joe was exposed, lots of drops, and our run game was smothered in the 2H. I don’t want to say demoralizing, but man that sucked.

Better hope we learn from this and rip off some wins.

eh he would have gotten concussed on the first designed run. i didn't miss him today.

Awful loss. I don’t want to blame play calling because players have to make plays — esp our qb who I’ve been a big supporter of. But that said I hate the second half play calling. I think coaches don’t often consider how it affects their team when they play too conservative. This team changed when the play calling changed.

Not in our situation. When you have a P4 team on road on the fritz, need to step on the juggler. Not play scared. Awful loss.
Well then I invite you to change your perspective

You can continue to be upset by the loss, or you can recognize the awesome and thrilling game it was and appreciate it for being entertaining. I say we let the coach and players worry about the former, and the fans enjoy the latter

Actually running the ball would have been great because it probably would have made more 1st downs.

So they weren't totally focused on counting down the play clock? I must have been seeing things. Based on what you posted we became totally predictable.

The pass plays that they did call were very low percentage too. Where was the screen to Murphy, which never didn't work? Where was Mel Brown.

Everything they did indicated that they were turtling.

I didn't get to see the game but I was checking scores so I was pretty excited for 3.5 hours today. Probably much more so than cuse fans. All of our games are must win games so when you have the chance to finally beat the ACC on the road, even if it is only the lowly cuse, and you fumble it, it is excruciating

Jim Mora was all about "pushing the edge" yesterday. That makes great video in practice. "Great effort, great execution, great focus." "Edge, edge, edge. Great teams find their edge, and then they push it." "There's a twitch in us." Doesn't sound like the 4th quarter to me

Just can't lose this game today with that lead

Regarding the cuse team after the game. I don't see anyone sprinting. What was the point of those 10 yard strolls anyway

I have to retire that analyst hat that I have. I was way off the mark on this one. UConn Nation will lick its wounds and win out the remainder of the schedule is my new prediction. I think today was a real learning experience for the coaches as well as the team. Delaware and Ball State. Time to get Nick a few more snaps?

This was a game to win and UConn coaching staff gave it away with playing not to lose and did just that. I am so mad and I don't want to hear about playing close. BS, this should have been a win. They play prevent defense which gave up yards in the middle of the field all game long. The offense of running the entire 4th quarter till they had to pass needed to not to happen. You have to put your opponent out when you have them on the canvas. '
Yeah, Buddy. Good encapsulation.

It’s the ultimate insult to us and our football program
It was disrespectful. And as someone already pointed out, Fran should be the one doing sprints for constructing a P4 roster that’s no better than UConn’s. As for the Cuse players, instead of sprints, they should be popping champagne to celebrate that UConn snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

idk if this is a compliment to uconn or an insult to uconn - I take it as an insult, as if being legitimately challenged by UConn nearly to the point of defeat, is such an embarassment to Fran Brown that he makes his kids run sprints after the game? i think it's a shot at UConn; THIS is what P4 teams think of us, even MEDIOCRE ones like syracuse, no matter what they say on the mic. I guarantee if this same game happens against even a meh ACC team like Wake or Stanford, the sprints don't happen.

If you put Fran on the spot and asked him, I'm sure he'd say it has "nothing" to do with us - he's just molding his guys. I call BS. he thinks we're beneath him.

This is why we needed to kick their ***es. nothing less than a WIN against them will shut them up, change perceptions, and actually make Big12 schools take us seriously in the next vote. We failed.

it's an insult. hope that clears that up

As an Independent in this era of rising costs and the P2 trying hard to choke everyone out we shouldn’t live to fight another day because there may not be one.
As we all know the football program is a huge drain financially on the University unless they get an invite to the P4. Each time we blow a game like this it makes the chances of getting that invite less likely.

Big East is actually in pretty good shape financially with this new model because Big East schools don't have football, obviously except for UConn.

At some point something has to give.
