OT: Super Bowl best ad

I like Kendrick, I’m sick of the “beef” and I find Drake corny as heck but also an incredible rapper. Just so my stance is known.

I was laughing at the old lady at my party saying the same things about “this rap guy I’ve never heard of” - I told her they aren’t marketing to 80 year old women they don’t care if you know him.

But I also found his show only average. It wasn’t an incredible show. He IS an incredible artist though.

Pat Mahomes and Kelce looking like they would cry any minute was my halftime entertainment. And post-game. And all offseason.
The moral of this story is you really need to be nicer to 80 year old women.

I have no dog in this hunt. Before the Super Bowl halftime show was announced I never heard of Kendrick Lamar. I just saw this article and laughed and figured I'd post it.

I thought it was going to be Anna Kendrick and some guy named Lamar.

Thought she'd do a play on Cups, but with athletic supporters. Then I found out football players don't wear cups anymore, so I changed channels and watched Jag re-runs and yelled at some kids to get off my lawn.

Now this is halftime entertainment the all American way. Connecticut suburbs. I just left the room and made something to eat while my 40 yr old wife and kids watched the show. I wanted the Eagles to win made money on them with a sizable win outright bet but I did not want it to be over by halftime.

One of the worst games in recent memory. Maybe Patriots-Rams 13-3 was less fun to watch but it was still a game. But this was not the best night for the NFL.

Taylor Swift is pushing 40 and that's exactly her demographic.
That too is far from accurate. She’s also much bigger in the 25-40 range than with the younger generation.

Listen to ANY of his other songs, literally. He gets criticism for NOT putting enough radio plays out. He did this song to show his versatility. This just shows you either don’t know Kendrick, or you don’t care enough to, which is fine, but stop acting as if you know enough to speak on it.

He’s already universally considered one of the GOAT rappers. It’s 2025, entertainment sells and there aren’t any world renowned rock bands making big enough waves to catch a Super Bowl halftime show, just deal with it or turn it off.
I don't agree with this. I knew nothing about Bruno Mars before his Super Bowl performance and the guy killed it. I'm not a Lady Gaga fan but I thought she did a great job too.

He didn't really dance and walked around in a monotone mumble. It sounded like one long song. Is he a great rapper? Probably. Was he a great halftime performer at a Super Bowl? Nope.

Would have been pretty cool if Lamar Odom did a duet with Anna Kendrick, Islands in the Stream. Now that’s entertainment.

From my standpoint the halftime show is reserved to be more of a spectacle than just one dude walking around totally inanimate. Not the venue for a solo artist looking like he’s walking around a mall. Throw a collab out there, some instruments, some animation, anything. KL is all about the lyrics, but for those that don’t know them and can’t hear them, the rest is pretty damn blah.

And Wtf was the point of Samuel L? Weird.

I went to a string quartet in a church in Brooklyn Saturday that did 90s grunge and found that 100x more entertaining.

I think this is a much fairer take than some of the other criticism in this thread. I can easily see how someone would want a higher energy or more pop performance on that stage without saying that they don’t see how anyone could think that noise was music.

Agreed. My original reaction to the performance was that it didn't have enough energy and the sound production was poor.

I didn't like Gaga's performance, way too over the top. I thought Bruno Mars was good. I really don't care for watching a bunch of choreographed dancers at any musical event. What I do appreciate is somebody actually playing a musical instrument. Bruno did that, he's a talented musician. Gaga did that. Prince sure as hell did. Aerosmith did.

If you are singing and what's backing you is recorded, you're doing Karaoke. Even if it's your song.
Trombone Shorty was there, why not work him in somehow?

Every time they showed a crowd at a Taylor Swift concert. It was loaded with teenage girls many even younger. I don't really care what that demographic chart shows.
Having been to two Taylor Swift concerts with my wife and her friends, I assure you that chart is accurate. May actually understate the amount of millennials. There is definitely a contingent of teenagers there but it’s not particularly large.

I saw local attorney Brook Goffe had at least 3 ads. I wonder what she had to pay. At least 15 seconds each.

There are some local ad slots left to the affiliate stations. Not cheap, but not the $8M/30 that they were paying on the nationwide ones for sure.

Everything about the game yesterday was boring, including whatever that young man did at halftime.
I watched reruns of Cheers after 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Congrats Eagle fans but I despise your team and coach BUT the D for the Eagles was amazing or is the KC Oline worse than the Giants?????

The best ad? - I loved the one for womens flag football as a NCAA sport.

Although not a great ad compared to others in the past, I liked the Duracell ad. At first, I thought it was in real-time with Brady stumbling on his words until his batteries were replaced.

Samuel = Uncle Sam.

There was a lot of messaging in the show that I’m sure went over 90% of this boards head.
Even I picked that up. Pretty obvious. Drake is Canadian.
