Stonehill Scouting Report

I graduated Stonehill in '13. We had a team that went to the D2 Final Four in '12. That team would lose to this UConn team by 30. This Stonehill team isn't as good as the '12 team, and they obviously haven't closed the talent gap between D1 and D2 yet. I fully expect this to be a long night for the Skyhawks. Go Huskies!

They weren't a very good D2 team last year and they graduated a couple of their best players, but did add a couple D2 All-Star-type guys I wish Andre were playing, because then he would be taller than their center with a higher vert than their wings and playing point guard.

My bad, wonder why it was discontinued it was quite unique looking.
Meh, it is a fairly obvious attempt at a knock off of the AMC pacer.

Their players, and school, might be small, but good for the students to fill the gym!

Wow, I think the Franklin High gym is bigger than that. The Field House certainly was.

Thanks for the write up @Hey Adrien!, much appreciated as always.

Is Stonehill one of those schools where their only diversity on campus comes from 6 basketball players?

And football. And a couple foreign kids on the soccer team.

Back in my 70s HS stone age, Stonehill used to play U Bridgeport and were often ranked in DII, as was UB. I'd pretty much go to any Ffld. U, SHU or UB ball I could get to.

Anybody else remember Bruce Webster?

Stonehill’s Shamir Johnson is the son of former Danbury High School stand out Vonsell Johnson. He was part of that great Anthony “Snake” Harris team and went on to play at University of Hartford and SCSU. That’s all I got.
Thanks for posting that, Horatio. I used to be pretty tight with Vonsie and Donnell Diggs back in HS, they both started out at UHart. Good to hear he's got a kid who's carrying on the torch.

@Horatio I was a Baseball/Football guy so I'm not in this pic but I dug my yearbook out last night to snap this.

Four kids from this team earned D1 rides back in the day. Vonsell, Donnell and Snake for hoops and Robby Clarke played Football at UConn. Tony Thayne still holds baseball records at WCSU as well.

Vonsell was by far the most successful when you turn the clock ahead.

And Dave Bike?

Anthony Harris was pretty damn good too wasn’t he? Played at the Dome then transferred to be a Rainbow.

Maybe a Buick Skylark? A Skyhawk is a plane, never too old for me to learn something new - yet.
Buick made both a Skyhawk and a Skylark, which preceded the Skyhawk. My first car was a Skylark. I was happy as a lark cruising in it.

Yes he was and yes he did. He’s referenced in my post. He’s Snake.

I remember a lot of the recruiting stories of JCs days but don’t remember much about Anthony Harris and UConn. I know he was a scorer for the Hatters averaged 33 a game his senior year but don’t remember JC going hard after him, wonder why?

JC was just getting started at UConn when Anthony graduated. I honestly don’t remember if Coach Calhoun recruited him, I’m sure he did because every major program in the country was in our gym on Friday nights. Booger picker was top dog in the NE back then and it was a big deal when Snake committed there.

Couple CT kids on Stonehill.

Shamir Johnson wasn't a huge UConn men's basketball fan while growing up in Waterbury, even though his godfather is E.J. Harrison, the guard who was part of the Huskies' 1999 national championship team.

Jackson Benigni, on the other hand ...

"I grew up a diehard UConn fan," the former Xavier High and Hamden Hall star from East Hampton confessed.

You young whippersnappers... THIS is a Sky Hawk.
One year only model, in the first year of Studebaker's Hawk series.

JC was going more National by then. KO was coming in and I think he was recruiting Travis Best and KO at the same time as Anthony if my timing is correct. Smittty just left when AH was graduating from HS.

I remember being blown away by Anthony Harris’s strength and skill in high school. Westhill won the FCIAC championship his freshman and sophomores years. Then he just dominated and Danbury won it all his last two years there. Those were great days of high school hoops in Fairfield County, when Westhill, Stamford High, Danbury and occasionally Ridgefield would field rosters full of D1 and D2 talent. Fun to watch.

Sadly, Harris’s work ethic was non-existent. He arrived at University of Southern Canada overweight and out of shape and essentially sabotaged his high-major career by ending up on academic probation by end of freshman year. Despite redshirting his sophomore year, he had no interest in attending classes. So it was off to some Iowa JC, then to Hawaii, where he actually played quite well. Classic case of what could have been.

Yup. I know the story very well. Too much too fast for him

Yep after a rather underwhelming first few years in various college levels he found his way at Hawaii finally his last year averaging 22 a game. Now that you brought up the early history I do remember that.

The Bart Torvik "line" for the teams from CT who are playing on Monday:

Stonehill 56
UConn 88

CCSU 71
UMass 86

QU 70
URI 78

Fairfield 68
Wake Forest 76

Yale is playing a D2 school.

There's no good way to handicap Stonehill. We might win by 50, we might win by 20.

Appreciate these as always.

Not a lot of size here, even for a low-low major. Clingan has 6-8 inches on their post players. Good grief

Clingan makes the rest of the UConn team look small. He may be still growing.
