I don’t think any of it was personal. He was clearly wrong in how he handled the loss. However, I am convinced he is genuinely appalled at the kind of basketball we saw in both games. There are reports that the NCAA quietly told the referee corps to allow “physicality” in these games. If true, it was clearly manifest in how the games were called. The question is, why would they choose a brand of basketball that results in a wrestling match and scores in the 40s and 60s. Imo, this is not the kind of basketball that results in big numbers of viewers in the long run. The game becomes ugly, slow, and imo unwatchable.
It will be interesting next season to see if he incorporates more physicality into his practices in order to prepare for these kinds of games. I’m very sure he is capable of teaching that style (or at least closer to it) but it’s also clear he does not want the game to go in that direction. Unfortunately, I think the WNBA has embraced that kind of play and it may be that college will follow suit. If that is the case, I don’t think it will last too long before the pendulum will swing back as I believe viewership will likely tank as a result. Anyhoo, glad Geno apologized and let’s look to next season.
