I don’t think any of it was personal. He was clearly wrong in how he handled the loss. However, I am convinced he is genuinely appalled at the kind of basketball we saw in both games. There are reports that the NCAA quietly told the referee corps to allow “physicality” in these games. If true, it was clearly manifest in how the games were called. The question is, why would they choose a brand of basketball that results in a wrestling match and scores in the 40s and 60s. Imo, this is not the kind of basketball that results in big numbers of viewers in the long run. The game becomes ugly, slow, and imo unwatchable.

It will be interesting next season to see if he incorporates more physicality into his practices in order to prepare for these kinds of games. I’m very sure he is capable of teaching that style (or at least closer to it) but it’s also clear he does not want the game to go in that direction. Unfortunately, I think the WNBA has embraced that kind of play and it may be that college will follow suit. If that is the case, I don’t think it will last too long before the pendulum will swing back as I believe viewership will likely tank as a result. Anyhoo, glad Geno apologized and let’s look to next season.

He already plays physical. Last night was a street fight. Both games. Terrible officiating.

I wonder whether the apology was prompted by a “suggestion” from his superiors.

I got 2 words...Damage Control.

Let's hope its not too late. Cant imagine it will be easy targeting someone in the portal after the incident last night, and hopefully not create issues with people we've been recruiting. Time for a fresh start for our program in my opinion.

That's baloney. It's the first time he's ever done it. And it was done in the spirit of protecting his players. He would never have mentioned the handshake thing had he not been fired up about the foul disparity. You know what really counts in the portal - $$$$$

Few will want to hear this, but Geno should have retired as king last year. 72 now, and the game is passing him by. He was uncontrollable last night. Kept digging his own ditch deeper in postgame. Contradicting himself and his own players, complaining about a jersey his own player ripped, then crawfishing. Dawn clearly shook his hand before and after the game. Aging Can cause a person to lose his filter and judgement. Hate to see him dwindle into a cranky old man who doesn’t know when to turn in his keys to the gym. The transition from him is both inevitable and soon. The program will die a slow death if he hangs around past his expiration date. Sure, the future without Geno is scary, but a future with him may even be scarier at this point.
Let's face it, nothing short of being boiled in oil will suffice for punishment for the jealous haters. I don't thank you for your disinterest in UCONN basketball.

And the wild part is that many of the same people that you just know criticize Hurley for his interactions with the officials are giving Staley a complete and total pass for her interactions with the officials.

Assuming that were the case (the NCAA allowing physicality), was UCONN really that much more physical than USC that such a discrepancy in fouls called should result? That's not UCONN's game. Did our women really become that much more aggressive overnight? What did they have for breakfast? I don't condone Geno's behavior but I understand why he may be upset. Still, you have to make baskets to win. I have no issue with Dawn (and she could care less if i did) but the petty side of me truly hopes USC gets a taste of its own medicine tomorrow. That being said, USC does have some really good players and they seized the moment last night.

If he needs help, I heard Coach Abe is available...

Sarcasm...

If in fact the NCAA had gotten the word out directly or indirectly as evidenced by the type of officiating in last nights games to "let them play", they need to revisit that decision because it will eventually ruin the game. People expect and want to see excellence and honed skills of the best players. If they want to see boxing or wrestling they have venues for those sports but it should not be on a basketball court.

I do this mean respectfully, but I don't get this statement at all.
He is still, by a day by the season schedule, less than a year removed from a championship. It wasn't a good look. There is no excuse and he has since apologized. I would not surprised if he does call Dawn, but will wait for their season to be over.
He is older and knows the end is much sooner and these chances are not going to come like they once did. Just last year Staley was dropping "F-bombs" up and down the second half of the game and that is perfectly acceptable behavior.

“I hope that either all of us or none of us are judged by the actions of our weakest moments… but rather by the strength we show when, and if we’re ever given a second chance”-Ted Lasso

I love this quote, and Geno has certainly earned a second chance. He has certainly earned to walk away when he feels fit to.

Geno has always done the right thing, great character all of us need a lot of forgiveness.
People who don't accept an apology are bad people imo barring a horrific crime of course.

Some truly ridiculous takes and comments in this thread... and I thought the men's hoops board was silly. The guy apologized. He's the head coach for the foreseeable future and will likely win another natty or two. End of story.

I agree. To say the game has passed by someone who trounced SC last year for a natty and made the final four this year is what's out of touch.
We have so much time, with our phones in our hands to let the emotions of this escalate. Get off social media for a month and see how life starts to bother you a lot less.

No I won the argument. Geno apologized. Where are the consequences for Dawn’s actions? Why does she get a pass according to your “logic”?
I love Geno. Been a fan since my freshman year in 1990. Great coach. Great person.

This apology, the thing this thread is about, was a misstep since it doesn't address Dawn directly by name. You apologize directly to the person that deserves the apology -- by name. Sorry if you don't understand that.

If you want to discuss what another team's coach should be doing, that's another thread.

.-.
The "let them play memo" mentioned earlier in the thread is an interesting theory/opinion but if they were truly "letting them play" would they have called two quick fouls (and they weren't hard fouls) on Blanca and Raven Johnson in the first quarter? They are two very important players to their respective teams so if they were letting them play they wouldn't want those two out of the game.

I cannot convey how disappointed I was by Geno’s (uncharacteristic) behavior— and in someone I have always respected.

That is all.
