St. John's Post Game Thread

Second straight game where we’ve gotten really nice bench contributions from Ross and Smith. Our scoring off the bench is limited but both played their roles really nicely. Reibe had a real freshman big game but easy to absorb with Reed absolutely feasting.
I was going to say Reibe just isn't cut out for that kind of physicality (yet), but he was great during the Arizona game, so maybe its just St. Johns that he struggles with.

That’s the first thing I noticed as well. The team didn’t start launching threes until under ten minutes and even those weren’t that egregious.

I’m still baffled by St. John’s shooting. UConn had great defense but some of their shots were so far off. Unbelievable but I love it.
The seemed shaken by our defense and intensity out of the gate and started rushing everything. That snowballs real quick if you don't settle down, and they never did.

I think most of us were wondering if they had that gear waiting to flip into. If Hurley is that good he now knows how to save it till Feb 25, then let’s crown him.
You really think Hurley has been slow playing things until the second half of the Nova game?

That was our A game. Awesome to see. March will be here on Sunday. Peaking at the right time.
That was our A game, this is what our 'ceiling' looks like. We played really tough ball, just like our early season OOC games. We matched St. John's energy and physicality right off the bat, and then we outplayed them in every way the whole game. I was at the game 8 rows up sort of behind the bench, and the battle inside between Ejiofor and Reed was like a wrestling match that Reed kept winning. Player of the game Tarris Reed with Demary and Karaban, Mullins, Ball, Smith, Ross right behind him. Everyone very connected, both ends of the floor. Reibe had trouble with the fouls but otherwise played well, just not too many minutes. Great team victory! We can beat anyone in the country in the tournament if we play like this! This was a great night of basketball in Hartford, and I yelled so much I love it.

The crowd was as loud and involved as I have ever seen, even at Gampel, and the crowd had an impact. Nothing says 'Our House!', like an exuberant crowd.

It seems like they stopped doing the stupid high hedge in second half of Nova game and all of a sudden their defense is stifling. Reed is now in position to stop all those drives to hoop.

Uh huh. I again ask, given it seemed so obvious, is Hurley saving stuff? Reed disrupted the paint all night, had 6 blocks, because he was in position.

Man, if we meet up again in the BE finals , that's going to be a very intense atmosphere to say the least.
If UConn and St. John's meet up in the BET final I hope UConn's first NCAAT game is later on Friday and not Thursday.

Agree with other posters, the atmosphere from the moment warmups finished through the end of the game was insane. I don't think St. John's truly understood what they were walking into tonight. Defense was so on point and connected, offensive ball movement was terrific, but I thought the hustle and rebounding really set the tone. Just the look from the St. John's players before the game told me that they thought they would smack UConn around tonight. It became the ole bully situation, punch the bully in the mouth and they back down. St. John's looked a mix of intimidated, shell shocked, and unnerved. Some of that certainly was from the crowd, but most of it came from the way UConn took it too them from the opening tip. Happy for Karaban going out of that building in style. As everyone said, can we bottle up that version of Reed and pull it out of the cupboard for every game? Loved the defense both Ball and Mullins played tonight. They got after it a lot more than they have in awhile. Felt great for Demary getting revenge after his poor game at the Garden. Ross seemed so much more confident tonight and is finally taking his defensive stopper role to heart. Smith gave them quality minutes and was much more of a harassing force tonight compared to more recent games. One of my favorite moments was watching Taliek's reaction when Mullins buried that corner 3 in the 2nd half. He slammed a towel down partly in disgust but partly, I think, in appreciation of how good a shot Mullins has. Epic win, reminded me so much of Marquette in 2023. Now put the exclamation point on it Saturday against Seton Hall and enjoy some well earned time off until Marquette.

A side note; Pitino not doing media after the game is such chicken-*. I’m glad we have a coach who will face it always, win or lose. Pitino is such a sore loser and the sport will be better when he retires.
That shows his character

Solo had a nice sequence when the game was still tight in first half. He dribbles behind his back and hits a midrange. This was followed by Solo’s defensive rebound and beautiful pass by Solo to Reed for a layup. Then Mullins hits s three and the game was never close after that.
