St. John's Post Game Thread

+Reibe overmatched tonight. He has played better in big games but SJ was also prepared for our 2 centers. Played 5 min to Tarris’s 35.
Other starters all in 30’s. For minutes.

Mullins looked like a pro in the opening minutes, culminating with a step back 3 late clock. Pitino quickly called a time out and Mullins didn't score again until 2 minutes left in the game. Is that good game plan to take Mullins away or is it Mullins fault for not adjusting?

Hurley dropped the ball again at the backup PG spot. We were better off keeping the kid that left for Maryland, cause Smith ain't it. He doesn't even look like a rotation player.
That kid wasn’t coming here to backup Silas.

.-.
This is a game where we could have used Karoma. Did we forget that we beat a lot of very good teams without Reed using Karoma. Reed was awful tonight. He's a liability at the FT line, so many turnovers and how many times can you hedge out 40 feet and lose your man for an easy layup. I also wouldn't mind seeing Millander getting minutes from Smith. Smith dribbles way too much and never finishes at the basket but he keeps forcing.

Games like this I wish we had Diarra. We asked an awful lot of Silas tonight not being able to count on MS. Diarra and Silas going to the rim on every play would have won this running away.

Tarris would help this offense so much more if he would roll to the basket with the guard, instead he does this weak shuffle that just clogs things up. And could he play any more under the rim? No lobs, and him not dunking and getting the and1 then missing 2 FTs was a harsh momentum swing.

Overall, we gave it away. But we really exposed our personel issues as well. This doesn't change our trajectory and I guess we are shooting for the 2 seed in the East now.

Zuby got away with murder. Unreal how favorable treatment he was granted.
Zuby doobie doo was protected by the refs 100%. Which I guess the top dawg usually gets but some of the calls they didn't call my daughter (who knows NOTHING about basketball) called the refs out on.

I talked myself into us winning tonight but in truth we should have seen this coming. They have the exact team that eats us up, we turn it over too much, and the FT situation is a problem.

Biggest issue, Tarris turtles against good bigs. Made Ejiofor look like a NBA all star.

But can’t win them all. On to the next one.

Let down by the defense tonight.
Losing their man, bad switching or lack of switching, backs turned, not boxing out, giving up points in the paint
The athleticism of St. John’s is really an issue for us. They were running up and down the court and not giving us time to breath

In what world are we allowed to have giant inflatables blowing behind a glass backward while the opponent is shooting free throws? The distractions are supposed to be outside of that area. They mentioned it in the broadcast, but for real, that was wild.

We aren’t a top 5 team. Can’t rebound, can’t hit free throws, can’t defend, can’t beat pressure. Smith was unplayable forcing Silas to get worn down by the end. We shot well but were terrible at everything else. The elite 8 is the ceiling for the team.
Smith def starting to look like portal bust at this point. On one possession he dribbled the entire possession, then drove and got blocked at the rim. He plays with zero common sense.

I think the chaotic physicality got to him. He was getting pushed around on the defensive side and occasionally held on the offensive side. But it's a good lesson going forward.

Awful is a stretch. 12 points and 6 boards is his norm and he added 3 blocks. He wasn't awful.

55% FG and 47% from three, but 15 turnovers and 14 assists. That really says it all.

It was a good run at the end of the game to come back. Led by Silas taking over offensively (finished with 18pts), but then he missed 2 late FTs and had that backbreaking turnover (9 TO and 3-6 FTs)

St Johns was more physical, more athletic, more tough for most of the game. Kudos to them, they played a really strong game. They bullied us around like they did last year

The first BE loss is in the books. UConn and St Johns are 1 game apart in the standings. The rematch in CT may very well decide the BE regular season crown

Reed needs to start taking 200 FT's a day.

We got a quick foul on Ejiofor and then we just never attacked him again for the rest of the first half. We tried to throw goofy lobs and just shot from the outside. If you know someone's going to be a problem on defense, attack them on offense.

Didn’t play well, which had to do a lot with St. John’s- with that said- also had a lot do with the refs- three calls down the stretch that were not fouls that kept St. John’s in the game- 31 to 12 free throw discrepancy is pretty outrageous by the refs especially when St. John’s took the same amount of three pointers as us.
The 3rd and 4th fouls on Reed were awful and game changing. But congrats St John's, they were the better team tonight. The FT shooting is really pissing me off.

All of the nonsense that they can get away with against the rest of the conference came back to bite them.

That's a preview of how our season ends if they don't off the nonsense. And maybe get a lil tougher.

The doom and gloom is wild.

Yeah we made mistakes in a hostile environment against a very good and physical team.

We also got hosed by the officials and got out shot at the FT line by 20 and still had a chance to win.

We have lost 2 games. One of those by 4 to the #1 team in the country without Reed and Mullins.

The offense seems to be fixed mostly, which is what everyone was worried about.

The one thing we really need to fix is the lineup rotations. Hurley has a bad habit of sticking Smith/Stewart/Reibe on the floor all at once which just can’t happen. They went on a 16-1 run with those 3 on the floor in he first half.

Disagree. The dunk on Zuby and the talking after sealed it for me. What did AK do besides let Hopkins get in his head?
Silas had 9 turnovers and sucked at the line. I don’t know what AK’s line was but he stuck his threes and wasn’t falling down everywhere.

Season won’t end like that because it won’t be Big East refs with the whistles in their mouths.

Seriously what happened to that guy who played so well against BYU, Az, and Illinois. When Silas was in foul trouble early in the season and he had to play extended minutes he was so good. Now that Silas has figured out how to stay outta foul trouble and we need a guy just to come in and spell him that guy from early in the year disappeared.
