St. John's Post Game Thread

And at least he had fight in him! He was a dog! Some of our other players want to be gentlemen. Frick that, man! Show some fight. AK no show and look scared.
AK had a better game than Silas.

SJU was the better team tonight. They exposes our weaknesses (FT shooting, TO's and inbounding the ball).

AK had a good game. Silas was amazing and frustratingly careless with the ball. It's hard when we need him to play 40 minutes.

Ross and Stew were typical role players. Reibe was was largely ineffective. Ball played pretty well. Mullins disappeared for most of the game and missed some important 3's late.

In the end, SJU just was more aggressive, forcing our 5 starters to commit 18 fouls. And they made their FT's. And they collected an offensive rebound off a FT miss late. Killer.

Aside from the obvious turnovers and free throws…
  • Poor rotations from Hurley (pulling Reed in 1st half while Zuby stayed in game led to 7-0 run). Reed should have been on the floor every minute Zuby was.
  • Smith continues to be useless. This is becoming a big problem that will continue to get exposed.
  • We got away from Reed too much in 2nd half and became perimeter oriented. As opposed to St Johns that kept riding Zuby.

A road game vs a Quad 1 team.

Tarris Reed went from King Kong to Ding Dong.

Solo Ball and Braylon Mullins...what are we doing here? Hurley and Murray have to figure this combo out.

Silas and Alex are warriors.

UConn is a Title contender. Tonight was tough. Hurley was not at his best.

We already know Big East refs are deficient, 5/12 FTP is ungodly.

SJU is a bad matchup for us, they rely on athleticism and speed to blitz opponents (better version of PC who gave us trouble).

We’ll be fine, but shooters need to get open, Reed needs to make his FTs and stop with the turnovers!

We shot ourselves in the foot so many times tonight. so damn sloppy. Outright disgusting at times.

But, a team as physical as St Johns only gave up 12 FTs all night?

Felt like the refs were making some calls for the "benefit of the league" tonight.

I commend Hurley for his restraint....I'd have been going nuclear.
Hurley will be mentioning that.

If the little things don't get cleaned this is the result you will get. A long bus ride back to Storrs.

Games like this happen. That’s why we have film. This one hurts but we still have a good team.

Don’t kill me but it’s a good win/loss for the Big East… looking forward to redemption.

Defense lost this game, and Silas has got to be more aggressive from the jump, he's our best player. Also, I was disappointed that Dan Hurley opted to close with Solo instead of JRoss when we were making a run with JRoss in the game.
Ball made a few bad plays down the stretch but Ross came in with us down 5 and left with us down 4 so it was hardly an egregious choice at the time

He was called for a couple ticky tack fouls where he was in position.

Games like this I wish we had Diarra. We asked an awful lot of Silas tonight not being able to count on MS. Diarra and Silas going to the rim on every play would have won this running away.

Tarris would help this offense so much more if he would roll to the basket with the guard, instead he does this weak shuffle that just clogs things up. And could he play any more under the rim? No lobs, and him not dunking and getting the and1 then missing 2 FTs was a harsh momentum swing.

Overall, we gave it away. But we really exposed our personel issues as well. This doesn't change our trajectory and I guess we are shooting for the 2 seed in the East now.

Zuby got away with murder. Unreal how favorable treatment he was granted.

SJU outscored UConn 13-1 during the 4 minutes that Malachi Smith played. Demary can't play 40 minutes and be effective late. We need someone to give him a rest.
Malachi was less than a Dayton player tonight. No idea who that guy was that took the court.

Unfortunately this is literally Malachi’s nightmare matchup. He just really struggles with this kind of pressure and physicality.

Well that sucked.

Some missed called by the refs at the end but that's not what lost us the game. We 100% lost this.

Here is to hoping we learn from this.

St John's is legit.
They have a coach who is very, very good.

With about a minute left, they had shot 15 more free throws than us, we had turned the ball over a ton, gotten out rebounded... And we still were right there. Some egregiously bad calls/no calls (the Silas push was the worst one IMO) but had we not played so sloppy we still win that game despite the officials.

As navery said this was a much needed wake up call. Confident we will rebound from this and be better in the long run.
The sloppiness was caused by St John’s ball pressure D. Everyone keeps saying in forced errors but for the most part Johnnie’s forced us to play faster and play more one on one which isn’t our game and it led to 15 turnovers.
