Hard not to like a 31 point win but only shooting 10% from three is a problem. That needs to get fixed if they are to have a shot at the final four and a championship.
It doesn’t get “fixed.” It’s unlikely to recur. The important thing is that even with fluke-poor perimeter shooting, our defense was ready. Defense isn’t flukey. It’s just a matter of hard work and communication, and the Huskies have both of those.

I agree with the proviso that against the top tier teams you will lose if you go 2-19 from the 3. I chalk that up to not playing for 6 days, different rims, and the post season. We were missing lay ups too so that actually proves the point. Watch tomorrow.

I took a peak at the St. Johns presser and from the jump he did not dismiss the first quarter disaster, but he didn't dwell on it and he expressed pride in their combative, never say die attitude. Watching the game that was exactly which kept me there. I didn't want to dishonor those kids by switching off.

Great defense and our offense had almost no turnovers--just three excluding the final one running out the clock. But who would have thought Azzim at 1-6 was our second best 3-point shooter today. Seven of our players tried and Sarah and Azzi had one each. ooof.

I feel the same way. We "committed" eight fouls and four were on Jana. No wonder she gets a little frustrated. She gets manhandled and no calls but if she gets near her player on defense, whistle alot of times. Surprised they let her get that clean block.
And what happened when they reviewed the St. John's foul when Gideon(?) dragged Ice to the floor? I thought it could be considered flagrant but I guess not the refs.
And the refs seemed even more focused on St. John's in the third quarter, getting us to the Bonus kinda quickly.
All in all, a good win even though we couldn't make layups or 3s. But we didn't need to.
And best of all Caroline SCORED!!!!!
Refs in second game were even worse.

Why should anyone be surprised when the Law of Averages works as advertised? If the team is going to have some games like Iowa State and South Carolina when they seemingly can't miss from the 3-point line, then to average out to 40% or anything similar, they have to have other games where they are 2-for-19. The same thing applies to batting averages in baseball, and to rainfall totals in the world of weather.

If you pay attention to the Celtics, who rely on 3-point shooting even more than Geno's team, you will see that they have games where they shoot 10% or so from 3. When they do, they often lose (but they still win over 70% of their games).

If UConn shoots 10% from 3 in an NCAA tournament game, they might lose for just that reason. That applies to any other team in the tournament as well, especially this year when there are no teams whose trademark is dominating the paint. Geno and the rest of the team have to concentrate on what they can control, which is taking good, open 3-point shots, and must expect that to produce results that are somewhere near their long-term average.

Worst shooting game in 45 years, according to Geno. :p:p:p

Paige scored 20 after deciding to take it over. Sarah grabbed 14 rebounds. Jana was 3-3 for 6 pts and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes. She was handcuffed by some dubious whistles. Oh, well.

And the DEFENSE was outstanding! In the 1st quarter especially, but throughout. Won the rebounding battle, 42-31, TOs 16-4, Blocks 7-3, steals 9-2. All around impressive.

Over all, I'd say Paige looks like she's getting ready to carry the team as far as she can. She's got her tournament face on.
We missed five lay-ups in the first half alone.

JoePgh- - - The two that come to mind in dominating in the paint are UCLA and TX otherwise I agree with your statement!
So many teams are Guard oriented this year!

Dragged her to the floor by her previously injured shoulder. Thankfully Ice was OK. Something like that, which was very intentional, should be flagrant. It seems to me that only a shot to the head is ever called flagrant.

Yeah, I felt that should have been called a flagrant foul. It wasn’t a basketball play at all and was incredibly reckless.

Jana's footwork is often unbalanced, reducing her ability to move quickly and jump. The best example was early in the game when a 5'6" St. John player drove around Jana, getting both the layup and foul. Virtually any other Huskie would have made the block. Standing still, she can make a layup but often gets unnecessarily sped up and become out of control. Against teams with slower, more deliberate offense she can help, but suspect Geno will go with smaller lineups against most of the teams we will face in the playoffs.

I’m surprised Jana has been the starter for most of the season even when Ice was available, who is quicker and a bit more experienced. Jana is more aggressive on offense than Ice, though not more skilled, and her defense is only now rounding into form.

Yesterday, Ice received a pass in the low post and wasn’t double teamed, and she passed it back out. I thought at the time that Sarah would have made her move and in all likelihood scored. And if Sarah had missed, she’d likely have grabbed the rebound and scored on a putback. The contrast to Ice is stark.

I think Ice can get to where Sarah is eventually as her offensive confidence grows. But Jana is much closer to Sarah’s level of confidence. She is unafraid to make moves against defenders in the low post, even double teams, sometimes unwisely, and she sometimes follows her misses.

One thing that struck me about Jana’s progress this season is how long it has taken her to learn how to move without the ball and receive passes. In recent games, she’s made cuts and scored on pick-and-roll plays, and she’s made herself available for passes directly into the low post. These are very encouraging signs.

I’m not sure Jana can be the difference maker in a tough game in the final rounds of the tournament this season, though I’d love to see it. Ice is probably closer to this especially on defense. But I have high hopes for the two of them next season. We’ve already seen Geno experimenting with having them in the floor together. If all goes well this summer, we should have a loaded frontcourt in the fall, with Jana Ice Ayanna and Gandy all available to support Sarah. They may not all be offensive stars, but Geno will have no shortage of rebounders and rim protectors. Add Caroline Morgan and Blanca to the mix and we may be a big, quick team next season.

I agree that it wasn't just the other player falling and getting tangled and/or to break their fall.

We'll never know though, as neither announcer said anything after the commercial break.

Solid win for me.

KC-Continues to be a great addition to the squad. I love her toughness and defensive intensity.
Paige- Paige is Paige. What an awesome player.
Azzi- Love her defense. She is another awesome player.
Sarah- The 3rd member of the Big 3. Rebounds with such authority!
Jana-Continues to impress and improve

The Bench Mob:
Ashlynn- The X factor. She plays her role well and will be the difference maker going forward.
KK- Same as Ashlynn, another difference maker out there on both ends of the floor.
Ice- She gives us another key player off the bench on both ends of the floor.
Allie and Q are going to be fine.
Caroline-Our sweet Caroline. I just love seeing her out on the floor. Each second out there, I know her confidence grows stronger. I am so happy and grateful that she still has that desire to get out there and play.

Well done, UConn!!

Ice seemed to have reverted a bit, perhaps lost a bit of her newfound confidence and that crash in the paint certainly didn't help. I think the jury is still out on Jana regarding her mobility and speed, maybe a summer of training and conditioning will help. The two of them will have plenty of competition next year, Ayanna and Gandy, so we shall see...

I believe it was called a foul on Gedeon, as reported in the live stats play by play, because no foul shots were granted as what would have happened for a flagrant foul.
Just another instance, IMO, where the officials are allowing the game to get more "physical" and you never know what (and when it) will be called and who will be at fault.
