Sports gambling and fixed card games bring Federal indictments (Merged)

I hate piling on this situation. But ive never unserstood why Billups is in the hall of fame. That said, i have not inspected his numbers. I assume they warrant the HOF..... i hope they do. Otherwise his HOF acceptance makes no sense to me.

For me he had a fine career, but hardly HOF worthy. He was a good player. Had his early stuggles but turned things around. Obviously the Detroit years were his best and left him with a reputation as a clutch/winning player. But that Pistons era only won one championship. Went to 2 Finals.... i think. There are lots of good players who are not in the HOF. Rip and Tayshawn from the same Detroit teams are good examples. Why Billups? I think its because his knickname is solid. "Mr Big Shot". No way a dude with that knickname can be left out of the HOF.
He was the face of one of the defining franchises of his era -- the mid-00s Pistons. I agree that his numbers and overall impact on the League probably don't warrant HOF induction, but I kind of get it.

I wonder if the mob names will also appear front page in papers or just only the NBA associates involved with the game, not running it, will lol
You won't see any mob names until they're at the point of indicating them.

Counterpoint: Big Shot Bob is not in the Hall of Fame.

Further, it is possible -- even recommended -- to take a look at a player's numbers before drawing conclusions about his career.

They named mafia names in the press conference.
Would like to get some faces out front with those names so people could know who they are as well.

Let’s get them front and center, too.

"i kind of get it" is probably where im at as well.... but that is kind of my point. He seems on the fence. And then he struts around with his HOF ring and his HOF credentials. All-the-while claiming and thinking my boy Clingan is a "situational player". To be honest, i dont know if he actually said my boy Clingan is a situational player. But i think he said something similar.... in my head

So Billups annoys me a bit.

i prefer my approach.... its more interesting and better aligns with Boneyard Philosophy. Shoot first, put Ketchup on Turkey... etc...

The names and faces are out there, go to the NY Post website.

I see it on the website. For some reason that same story isn’t on Twitter. Just the one with the NBA coaches and players involved in an operation they set up.

Live udpates from the NYPost.

You have to admit this is kind of brilliant scheme by the mob. Probably has been going on for many years, but the numbers and losses have piled up and has finally caught up with them .

'Fish' to 'face cards': Read the mobbed-up lingo used in rigged NBA poker game scheme

A rigged poker game scheme that netted tens of millions in illegal profits used mobbed-up lingo including "fish" and "face cards" to refer to victims and the NBA players who acted as bait, Brooklyn US Attorney Joseph Nocella said.

"The scheme involved victims knowns as 'fish' who were often lured to participate in these rigged games by the chance to play alongside former professional athletes who were known as 'face cards,'" Nocella explained.

The face cards who were regularly enlisted to trick people into joining the rigged games included former NBA player and current Trail Blazers coach Chancey Billups and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones, the prosecutor said.

"What the victims, the fish, didn’t know is that everybody else at the poker game, from the dealers to the players, including the face cards, were in on the scheme," Nocella said.

Maybe stuff like this is what Adam Silver meant.

With it being legal, they have the technology to actually track and crack down on this stuff.

Reminds me of the plot from the movie the Sting with Paul Newman and Robert Redford except they did it with horse races.

Sports leagues are quite probably going to regret cozying up to professional gambling outfits and putting multiple teams in Vegas. If sports ever heads down the road of the fans questioning if they’re on the up and up or not, that spells trouble. It’s a very bad look to have the sponsorships and partnerships they do.
The concept of the NBA not being on the up and up was established in the zeitgeist a long time ago. Now it’s just hit a new level with how easy and accessible it is for players to take their cut.

LOL. Sure thing.

Follow the money. The amount of money being made "legally" and that's getting spent on sports, sports gambling, fantasy sports, etc makes it clear that nothing is going away.

Meanwhile, the league still pushes gambling every second of the day. What goes around comes around.

I hope the league implodes, college basketball becomes king again, and we go back to regional conferences not tempted by greed and money.
Remember CTBasketball, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies

And referees. The player prop bets open the door to so much sketchy behavior with over/unders. It’s naive to think refs and even coaches couldn’t get in over their heads where they owe someone something. Even if a coach has money they can “afford to lose” doesn’t mean their spouse would be happy about knowing about it if it’s too big to hide. The alternative is giving shady people information or favors instead.

How do you feel about Ohtani's story and how quickly that got swept under the rug?
I didnt realize the Ohtani story was being swept under the rug. I dont receive as much US news here in MX. So nuances like that are not as apparent. Is it being swept under the rug by this gambling thing? If yes, that makes sense. The gambling story has more potential. More potential for non-sports interest. Especially if high ranking gov officials are making statements about it.

As far as the Ohtani story is concerned, I am both blown-away an unmoved. It feels unreal to me. Almost as if he's playing a different sport than anyone else in baseball history. And thus you can't even compare what he's doing with anyone else. He's the best and the worse and the only player ever in this new sport that no one else plays. So when I say I'm un-moved by it... what I mean is, imagine if your crazy friend made up some new sport and said, "check this out. I just made up this new sport. And I'm the best who's ever played it. Are you impressed?" Obviously you would not be. Of course, Ohtani is playing an established sport. Maybe the most established. It's very unreal. It's like one of the sports video games where you can "create your own player". And you just make up some dude who's the fastest, strongest, best-est in every way.

Could very well be right. But just because something could happen doesn't mean it SHOULD happen. This version of pro sports is not progress nor its best version of itself. Pro wrestling also makes a lot of money.
