Sports gambling and fixed card games bring Federal indictments (Merged)

Seems it's time to use this again...

I hate piling on this situation. But ive never unserstood why Billups is in the hall of fame. That said, i have not inspected his numbers. I assume they warrant the HOF..... i hope they do. Otherwise his HOF acceptance makes no sense to me.

For me he had a fine career, but hardly HOF worthy. He was a good player. Had his early stuggles but turned things around. Obviously the Detroit years were his best and left him with a reputation as a clutch/winning player. But that Pistons era only won one championship. Went to 2 Finals.... i think. There are lots of good players who are not in the HOF. Rip and Tayshawn from the same Detroit teams are good examples. Why Billups? I think its because his knickname is solid. "Mr Big Shot". No way a dude with that knickname can be left out of the HOF.

I can't start the hand-wringing over a poker game. I'm guilty myself.
It's not that it was a poker game, it's that it was rigged and mafia-involved. But this is like lesson #1 in poker -- only play at casinos or, maybe, in special circumstances, in home games where you know everyone.

Sports betting is probably a net negative for society, but selfishly I hope it sticks around because grinding out the promos has been a nice little side hustle for a few years. As far as sports integrity, I think it can be managed as long as there are severe penalties and strict enforcement, which hopefully we will see in this case.

I'd have to imagine that every player gambles, and many times that gambling is done outside of a legal casino and often high stakes. I'm imagining (total guess) that there is more to this. Something like this was a HUGE Mafia game or system and the FBI is trying to make a splash, Billups was involved in the game (recruiting players), and/or he lost enough that there is evidence that he influenced basketball games.

He was the face of one of the defining franchises of his era -- the mid-00s Pistons. I agree that his numbers and overall impact on the League probably don't warrant HOF induction, but I kind of get it.

Counterpoint: Big Shot Bob is not in the Hall of Fame.

Further, it is possible -- even recommended -- to take a look at a player's numbers before drawing conclusions about his career.

"i kind of get it" is probably where im at as well.... but that is kind of my point. He seems on the fence. And then he struts around with his HOF ring and his HOF credentials. All-the-while claiming and thinking my boy Clingan is a "situational player". To be honest, i dont know if he actually said my boy Clingan is a situational player. But i think he said something similar.... in my head

So Billups annoys me a bit.

What's the saying.....If you go to a poker game and you don't know who the chump is...it's you!

Also never play cards with a guy who’s got the same first name as a city.

i prefer my approach.... its more interesting and better aligns with Boneyard Philosophy. Shoot first, put Ketchup on Turkey... etc...

The names and faces are out there, go to the NY Post website.
I see it on the website. For some reason that same story isn’t on Twitter. Just the one with the NBA coaches and players involved in an operation they set up.

Live udpates from the NYPost.

You have to admit this is kind of brilliant scheme by the mob. Probably has been going on for many years, but the numbers and losses have piled up and has finally caught up with them .

'Fish' to 'face cards': Read the mobbed-up lingo used in rigged NBA poker game scheme

A rigged poker game scheme that netted tens of millions in illegal profits used mobbed-up lingo including "fish" and "face cards" to refer to victims and the NBA players who acted as bait, Brooklyn US Attorney Joseph Nocella said.

"The scheme involved victims knowns as 'fish' who were often lured to participate in these rigged games by the chance to play alongside former professional athletes who were known as 'face cards,'" Nocella explained.

The face cards who were regularly enlisted to trick people into joining the rigged games included former NBA player and current Trail Blazers coach Chancey Billups and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones, the prosecutor said.

"What the victims, the fish, didn’t know is that everybody else at the poker game, from the dealers to the players, including the face cards, were in on the scheme," Nocella said.

Maybe stuff like this is what Adam Silver meant.

With it being legal, they have the technology to actually track and crack down on this stuff.
