Sports gambling and fixed card games bring Federal indictments (Merged)

Who would have thought there would be huge scandals when sports leagues embrace gambling. Make gambling illegal again. You should have to find a sketchy Latvian website that pays out in bitcoin to gamble.
This sounds like it was illegal gambling, at least in Billups case. The mob was involved.

Hes not a very good coach in my opinion. But my opinions are selfish and UCONN-centric. I think hes done a lousy job with Clingan. We will see what happens with this. Not a lot of details about Billups' situation. They said poker... connected to the mafia. To be honest, poker by itself doesnt seem like that big of a deal. Not even sure why the FBI needs to be involved. But of course more details required.

Sports leagues are quite probably going to regret cozying up to professional gambling outfits and putting multiple teams in Vegas. If sports ever heads down the road of the fans questioning if they’re on the up and up or not, that spells trouble. It’s a very bad look to have the sponsorships and partnerships they do.

Someone else tweeted several Knicks players are involved. No clue who the guy is who posted it.

Meanwhile, the league still pushes gambling every second of the day. What goes around comes around.

I hope the league implodes, college basketball becomes king again, and we go back to regional conferences not tempted by greed and money.

I have no idea what the previous post about Hurley is trying to say BUT...

This is the kind of thing that feeds the ref-consipracy theories. Now you're going to have constant accusations of the refs.

If a player or coach making many millions is going to get knotted up with the mob, you're telling me it's not going to happen to referees?

Hard to believe they would be completely clean.

The idea that you can bet but not on your own sport? That's kind of laughable.

There is no protection for college players or refs either.

I watched a Champions League soccer game this weekend and read social media on the refs decisions (which were some of the most bizarre things you've ever seen (like a goal disallowed because the defending team committed a penalty a split second before the goal). A guy given a red card because his arm swung backward and grazed the defender who was tackling him (American football style) on a breakaway. The social media were all about rumors and payoffs and crooked refs. Why? Because this happens in international soccer.

A mafia poker game can create losses that then the mob can then leverage in a basketball game. However, it’s not as bad as directly betting on a game or player themselves.
Interesting, Donovan was 3-5 FG’s last night including 2-4 on 3 point attempts. Scored only 8 points in 30 minutes but shot 60%.

Just a joke about how he gets linked to these random NBA jobs with no interest. But, in a different world, I would love to see him coach Donovan again.

so you want DC to come back to college…I’m good with that.😎

Really hope my Knicks aren't involved but I have a feeling they are.

What’s ignored and what’s prosecuted in this country is not surprising but wild nonetheless.

But like I said in the NBA thread, go coach your guy, Danny! Hurley to Portland (not) confirmed.
I realize this is sarcasm, but I still don't love seeing it. ☹️

I can't start the hand-wringing over a poker game. I'm guilty myself.

I have to think that they aren't the 'big fish' here and will be offered plea deals for direct testimony and anything documented if they have it.
If it comes out they did anything to alter or influence any actual results, then the NBA may push more for harsher penalties, whether they are hypocrites or not. Time will tell, but like everybody else, I just want to know how far it went.

I know I'm in the minority now, but if it is true and even just limited to poker games, it makes the entire league susceptible potentially and think regardless what happens legally, the NBA needs to put in their own form of justice and it should be as harsh as possible. I'm not a let Rose or Shoeless Joe into the HOF, but now that they are dead, I'm not opposed to as much as when they are alive.

Just make clear lines in the sand and if you cross them follow through with the punishment.

Seems it's time to use this again...

I wonder if the mob names will also appear front page in papers or just only the NBA associates involved with the game, not running it, will lol

I hate piling on this situation. But ive never unserstood why Billups is in the hall of fame. That said, i have not inspected his numbers. I assume they warrant the HOF..... i hope they do. Otherwise his HOF acceptance makes no sense to me.

For me he had a fine career, but hardly HOF worthy. He was a good player. Had his early stuggles but turned things around. Obviously the Detroit years were his best and left him with a reputation as a clutch/winning player. But that Pistons era only won one championship. Went to 2 Finals.... i think. There are lots of good players who are not in the HOF. Rip and Tayshawn from the same Detroit teams are good examples. Why Billups? I think its because his knickname is solid. "Mr Big Shot". No way a dude with that knickname can be left out of the HOF.

It's not that it was a poker game, it's that it was rigged and mafia-involved. But this is like lesson #1 in poker -- only play at casinos or, maybe, in special circumstances, in home games where you know everyone.

Sports betting is probably a net negative for society, but selfishly I hope it sticks around because grinding out the promos has been a nice little side hustle for a few years. As far as sports integrity, I think it can be managed as long as there are severe penalties and strict enforcement, which hopefully we will see in this case.

I'd have to imagine that every player gambles, and many times that gambling is done outside of a legal casino and often high stakes. I'm imagining (total guess) that there is more to this. Something like this was a HUGE Mafia game or system and the FBI is trying to make a splash, Billups was involved in the game (recruiting players), and/or he lost enough that there is evidence that he influenced basketball games.
