Sport gambling, where do you stand?

I did for a few months when it first became legal and it was fun. But I have an addictive personality and didn't want to go down that road so I stopped

Not a fan. Don’t gamble on anything. Would take the enjoyment out of it for me. Don’t like lotteries either. Never been to the casino except for a concert.

Sums up my opinion too, although I'll log in every now and then.

I love watching sports. I notice that times when I bet, I'm less focused on the actual game and more honed in on how my bet will win, even if I put in $1 or $2, so I guess to sum it up: if I bet, a vast majority of the times it's a game I don't even plan on watching. I don't like my experience watching a game that I bet on and I never bet on a game of a team that I am rooting for.

I’d rather waste my money on a great restaurant. I will say though, while i wouldn’t call it gambling, the best return I ever had was throwing ten bucks into my son’s very big law firm NCAA tourney pool and winning 1st place in the thing for $1500. I had a cousin-in-law , RIP, a dentist who gambled on everything, especially sports, but he had one edge. He bet through his brother who was a bookie who was unlikely to cut his hands off if he ever owed. On line betting was not a big thing during his life time but he spent a lot of time at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

My buddy won a million dollars on a 20.00 entry fantasy tourney this year. Plus a paid trip to a champions tourney later in the year.

Case in point. $20 is fine. Bringing 10 grand to Vegas thinking you're gonna win isn't. My brother won $2500 by betting on UConn to win it all last Jan during their slump on a small bet as well. (I never bet on UConn).

For UConn basketball? Absolutely not. For regular NBA games or NFL games, it definitely helps me watch and be invested in games I’d have no interest in otherwise.

Amen to this. I can't bet on UConn anyway, which I think is a silly thing, but it would absolutely not affect how I watch them. I definitely watch more NFL with $ on the game. NBA I occasionally bet on, but I can't stomach the game and just check my bet by looking at Yahoo sports.

The only bets I place on UConn games are emotional hedge bets against UConn lol. That way if we lose I at least make a little money… I lost a lot of money last March (although it was mostly offset by some future bets I placed on UConn to win it all)

I used to bet on sports years ago in my teens and early 20's. I always found betting baseball to be the most profitable. In the end I was still a net loser. In my early 30's I became a commodity trader in Chicago. In the pit I always felt as if I had the edge, I was the house so to speak. After I became a trader it killed me not to have the edge so I stopped gambling. My only gambling suggestion is to try and get every wager odds as close to 50/50 as possible.

Yes, had the chance twice and won both times. 2011 and 2004. Cannot remember the odds for 04 but 11 was 50-1.

I stand almost entirely on the sidelines, based on 'loss aversion' principles as much as anything else.

Nonetheless, I'm well-acquainted with the low-point stories of 3 addicted gamblers:

The second-in-his-class-at-Harvard-Law guy whose downfall began when he bet wrong on silver along with the Hunt Brothers (yes, not sports there, but both before & after, along with cards & casinos), and ended with Federal incarceration, after quite a few interesting stops along the way;

the massively large & unlikely dear friend who was banned from having certain banking accounts for a while and was fortunate to get some leeway from people who (really) wanted him to pay up by dangling smaller guys with bigger debts from AC hotel windows;

and the completely unexpected late mid-life tale of financial wreckage, and a 30+ year marriage nearly shattered by his repeated dishonesty, which he now shares & supports others within a state counseling program devised to aid similar folks whose adult behaviors went beyond the usual norms and boundaries regularly mentioned in casual acceptance of what isn't so easy for some as many might claim.

I do like 2 and 3 dollars to win 25-60 depending on size of my parlay so mine aren’t crazy but so frustrating, probably “lost” 200 bucks the last 2 weeks on 1 point, 1 ML 1 catch … it’s the thrill baby!

2 years ago, Edwin Diaz appeared in 61 games. 118 Ks in 62 innings. 9 ER allowed all season. 32 saves, blown saves. I made a MINT betting on 0 runs for the opposing team that inning, plus I bet a K on most hitters middle or down in the lineup. He struck out basically 2 of every 3 outs. It was fish in a barrel.

Online gambling allows you to peel the layers back more and find spots. If you're happy with a 2 team teaser, have at it though. Good luck.

If you're in CT: Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods, and MGM Springfield all have $1/$2 No Limit Texas Hold 'Em games running at all times basically. Mohegan Sun gets my vote as the best option of the 3. In CT, it is not possible to play online poker for real money legally, but it could conceivably happen in the future (NJ and PA both have legal online poker).

I feel exactly the same. All of the sudden gambling is ok because the sate can make some money. The hypocrisy is ridiculous. In Florida you can only bet online through an app that is controlled by the Hard Rock Seminole Indian owned casino. It seems to me that a lot of people were labeled criminals for providing a service to consulting adults. Unfortunately some people I know paid that price.

I’m in the St Louis area. I’m on FanDuel for fantasy. It’s fun betting nickels in large tournaments. I also do 2 NBA games a night. Fantasy only. $1 versus 2 others. I don’t drink I don’t smoke. Been doing this for a year now I am probably down $30. One day I’ll win that elusive $200. In Missouri the STL and KC population crosses the state lines into Illinois and Kansas to place bets. State of Missouri missing out on all that tax money. If I want to place a bet I drive to Illinois, get off first exit and go to gas station. On weekends this gas station is surrounded by dudes in cars, phones in hand placing bets. High comedy! Never bet college sports though. I don’t know enough about the teams. My bets are 90% fantasy and a dollar or less. For me it’s more about fun than believing I can win big money.
