South Carolina vs Georgia

That announcer was funny. First he said the SC Free throws could "Ice" the game when it gave them a three point lead. Then he says "I wonder what Dawn learned about her team". Maybe that they aren't as good as she thought they were?

Consider:
Can any of these teams give us so much as a game?
They're all getting worse, not better.
ND, bleh...SC, I suppose there's still Maryland or whomever

Except what's the deal with Wilson's foot?
Baylor is probably getting better.
ND, bleh, but their two freshmen got good minutes and scored well. Positive down the road.

But the ACC teams seem determined to be mediocre: NC State loses again. ND with two losses. Louisville, which seemed on the cusp of becoming a great program, loses again.

I don't think South Carolina can win by this razor-thin a margin against an unkanked team and expect to beat UConn on the road. I find the transitive property of Sports works exactly like this in wcbb. I see the Huskies finding a way.

A'ja Wilson is really in pain with her ankle injury. Boneyard thread

Am I correct in assuming that Dawn Staley is in line to take over as Olympic coach if Geno sticks to his guns and bows out? I don't find her to be that great of an in-game coach from what I've seen of her South Carolina teams, especially considering how much talent they have..........

I am hoping it goes to Cheryl Reeve if as you say they don't convince Geno to do one more go-round. I think she is a really good coach and already knows how to deal with superstars. I agree that Dawn is good at building programs but I am not so sure she is a great coach - have yet to see that. She might actually be better with pros having been one, rather than trying to teach young women how to be pros.

Be careful Charlie, you're not supposed to criticize Staley on here. A lot of people think she's a great coach. Except she had to hire an offensive coordinator to help her and they still look like this.

She's certainly done a great job building the SC prgram.........just not sure she would be my top choice to make adjustments during a difficult game........then again the US team doesn't have too many of those.............

This game was horrible. Coates can't play without A'Ja? Georgia killed themselves. I would have kept going high-low, and Coates had 4 fouls, so take it to her, and make her foul out. South Carolina couldn't score more than 66 points against an un-ranked Georgia, what are they going to do against the #1 team?

Really? I know they were missing A'ja, but this was the same team that lost to Missouri by 18.

Nevertheless it's not about making adjustments, but about having an offensive system that's more than dump it in to the post or guards create off the dribble. Your offense has to have a plan B, C and D. If necessary, yes, a plan E.

It's 30-27 at the half.

Cuevas is a train wreck.

The train wreck had the best scoring game of her career tonight.

I thought the game was pretty good. They didn't look nearly good enough to stay in the game with UCONN though.

The game against Miss. State will be must watch TV.

BTW- I like Cuevas...

But it really is a very easily slide from well oiled machine to team in trouble - the international teams are good, but like with Uconn, Geno's system can make good teams look really bad. Just look at how badly the NBA players did in international competition before coach K brought organization to chaos.

If you're a UConn fan I think it's a given that you like Cuevas. Me personally? I love the woman. Hope she plays every minute against us.

First thought : When Cuevas is your best player on the floor .

Second Thought: Coates may be as strong as a bull but God is she slow. Thank god they let offensive rebounds be part of the game of basketball.

Third Thought: How do they attract so many fans with that style of play?

Final Thought: Hope Aja is back at full strength so we have a challenge before the tournament.

Cuevas was, is. and will always be a train wreck. The fact she is playing tells us there is something missing at USC.

I was browsing this board during timeouts at the Duke game.... and I expected Cuevas to have double digits turnovers or some outrageous shooting percentage or something. I just looked at her stats, and they weren't nearly as bad as I thought they would be.

Did anybody catch Dawn's potty mouth?

Is it worse than Coach Geno's ???

No doubt in my mind that Baylor can go toe to toe with UConn.

In the first half she'd run down the court, with her teammates in position, and fire up a three about 5 seconds into the shot clock. She was missing early in the game and she pretty much allowed Georgia, hardly an offensive juggernaut, to stay in the game. And that's why I called Cuevas a train wreck.

Credit to Dawn for whatever she said to Cuevas at half time but the kid is a junior. She's completely unreliable when it comes to knowing what to expect from her. Boneyarders were horrified at Kia Nurse's shooting slump early in the year, to the point that they wanted to pull her from the starting 5 and replace her with a freshman, yet Kia's defense and game control were always excellent. I can't imagine what the Boneyard would do to her if she played like a box of chocolates ("you never know what you're going to get" ~Momma Gump).

I like her too. She and Coates may be the best things that ever happened to us.

I find Coates to be overrated........she is an excellent rebounder at both ends of the court and her shooting percentage is high but if all you do is shoot layups and you're a strong 6'5" player I don't find that particularly remarkable........I noticed that the few times she was challenged and was forced to adjust her shot she missed badly............not saying she isn't a very good player.........just not a great one.............

South Carolina fans, after a brilliant start Kaela Davis has regressed to her statistical norm shooting 36% on the season, which is identical to what she shot in two years at GT. That was me telling you "I told you so" and this is me telling you that you should be very concerned because she is leading your team in shot attempts.

South Carolina now up 47-38, Georgia with the ball.

Now 47-40. Still a snoozer. I'm flipping back and forth between the game and a fairly mediocre movie - Cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone. It's 50-50 which is less watchable.
That's some pretty high praise for that movie.

Yes. What the blank are you doing?

Really? This from fans of Geno?

I'm not sure what you are referring to:D but sometimes Philadelphia's have a way of expressing themselves where some translation might be appropriate. Cliney is from Newark, NJ so perhaps Dawn didn't want to take any chances. I was wondering the same thing, What (fill in the blank) was Cliney doing there!

I hadn't watched a SC game yet this season so I dvr'ed this one. I was getting bored last night so I turned this on to see how they did without Aja. I watch all games after dvr'ing them.

The first thing I noticed was at the start of the game they showed Aja and Cuevas was sitting next to her on the bench. I thought that maybe she was injured or something. They finally put her in- I think after Coates was out of the game. She was playing some nice defense and was disrupting Georgia's offense. Got a couple of steals and they ended the half with a good lead.

Georgia was double-teaming Coates and clogging the middle. Cuevas was driving the middle and taking advantage of the defense's tactics. Cuevas may have made some bad shot decisions but the other players were not taking up the slack from Aja's absence.

She stepped up her game and won the game for SC.

Thanks for actual game analysis. Cuevas had a great night for the team, she did exactly what was needed and what Dawn wanted to do. Her improvement has been nice to see this year and I think she's really embracing her role off the bench. Every team we play is going to play off of her and she needs to continue capitalizing like she's been doing the last few games. Coates had a good game for a player that was being triple-teamed whenever she wasn't being double-teamed. We needed Kaela Davis to step up tonight and she didn't. Davis has to realize that as a volume shooter you're not going to be hot every night, but you have to stay engaged and she wasn't engaged defensively. Hopefully she will step up in Baton Rouge as I'm sure Wilson will not play, which is a good decision. Gray played okay, but I still think Gray is holding back.. she can do much more. Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and Tyasha Harris (true freshmen), started tonight.. just to illustrate how little of a bench SC has (I have no idea where this idea of SC having a "massive bench" comes from, we typically suit up 11 players, tonight it was 10 as the ever-injured Tiffany Davis also couldn't play and 4 of those are freshmen.. so.. ).

Georgia has a good player in Caliya Robinson. I like her ability to stretch the floor and play inside as a post. Normally, we would put Wilson on a player like her but tonight we had absolutely nothing to stop her.. we tried Davis on the perimeter and Gray inside and vice versa.. neither worked. She was a mismatch and it worked. Roberts is also a really good player for the Bulldogs.
