George Harrison claimed that Ticket to Ride was the first heavy-metal song because of the 12-string Rickenbacher he played on it. I think if that can constitute heavy metal, then I'd give the Kinks the honor, with Dave Davies being the first to play a guitar with heavy distortion (achieved by taking a pen knife to a speaker).I'm sure this is a source of raging debates. I think Black Sabbath beat them to producing something that could be called heavy metal. Just doing a little googling, I see The Beatles, The Who and Led Zeppelin also mentioned. I've also seen it argued that certain classical music pieces were pretty much "metal," they just didn't have electric guitars yet. Fun topic.
Oh heck ya, great, great, choice of song and artist.Close enough?

RIP Leslie West
From a great chronicler of small town New England life
He was, he died in 2011 officially of heart disease but essentially it is thought he drank himself to death. The last time I saw him live he was so drunk he forgot the words to one of his signature songs, “Birches”. I love all his work but recommend “Something I Saw or Thought I Saw” whose songs are centered around his divorce from his second wife. He also published two novels; I read the first one, “Edson”, which was a good read.He is (was?) quite an interesting artist. Thanks for the introduction!
