This is an absolute gut-wrencher from Eliza Carthy, who can wrench a gut as well as anyone. It’s a version of the unfortunare rake, which is also the root for Streets of Laredo, When I was on Horseback, etc.
IIRC, this song was written in the 19 th century by a poet/songwright, can’t remember the person’s name. It’s about a damsel who was kidnapped by a demon and the hero who battled it and rescued her.
Ironically, "Everything is Awesome" from The Lego Movie was written to the response of the songwriter's divorce from his wife and mother of his 3 children.

But it’s always miffed me that Led Zeppelin took credit for the song. It wasn’t written by them. It was written by Memphis Minnie and her husband, Kansas Joe McCoy, and recorded in 1929.
