The original film version of West Side Story, which opened in 1961. The song? Maria--"say it soft, and it's almost like praying..." (Great lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.)

(To tell you how old I am, I saw the movie on the week it opened, in a theater in Manhattan. I still remember speaking with an older woman sitting next to me, who said, "You should have seen it on Broadway." The Broadway show opened in 1957, and ran for 732 performances. And, yes, I regret that I didn't see it on Broadway.)

Another about long-lost love. In this one the protagonist hides it well. I LOVE Yvonne Lanauze's vocal; she gets me every time, even though I've owned the recording for over 50 years. Final verse:

No, Sophisticated Lady, I know
You miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh
You cry

Here's a mood. Dream pop in general is soothing and mellow with a touch of sexiness. This classic from Mazzy Star probably exemplifies that as good as anything (not to take away anything from Margo Timmins and Cowboy Junkies).
