Singare in the portal

I personally wish only good things for Singare, Nowell and Abraham. In fact, there is nothing I would like better than to see each of them find solid teams and each have a quality game against us in the championship games when we win our seventh, eighth and ninth titles.

Definitely no surprise here, I thought he did very well when he was called. Someone is going to get a surprise big that can play if given the minutes. Thank you Youssouf Singare, hoping the best and I will be watching for your games next year.

I do feel like we def need a dept big now. Another guy who may be a role player in a lower conference who wants to go into coaching some day. I do however feel good about the center position provided we have Reed and Reibe... just need a third big who can come in when needed due to injury or foul trouble. Really could use a phil nolan type

(Now I'm looking to see if anybody already posted it)

The days are dwindling for the era of having 4 year program players. I don't like this, but completely understand it. Thanks Youssouf!
Honestly, we have to think of this from the player's viewpoint. Singare may only have a couple years left in his playing career. If he wants to go chase playing time, I certainly do not blame him.

He's had the opportunity to learn from the best. Now it's time for him to spread his wings and go make the best of the time he has left.

Wish him all the best. Always had a smile on his face.

The days of developing a late bloomer into their 3rd or 4th year is a thing of the past.

The fact that Hurley rarely gave him any minutes likely gave him little hope he'd get more PT in years 3 and 4. Plus the addition of Reibe and possible addition of a more experienced big from the portal cast doubts as well.

Filling out the roster turns into a wad of money and roll of the portal dice, hoping you can get the players you hope are productive, fit your system, culture and need. There's no guarantee that a player who developed within a different program and system, and sometimes against a lesser level of competition will pan out. It did with Newton but not so well with Mahaney. There were some from last year's portal who transferred from major conferences that did poorly with their new teams. UConn's multi action motion offense isn't easy to learn. Even with some returning players this year's team often ran it poorly. Fortunately it's not as complex for our 5, so hopeful they can add a more experienced 5 or 4/5 combo.

I'm inclined to believe that programs are shelling out huge piles of money to fill their rosters. One would think that at some point the money starts to run out.

I was really hoping he'd stay
Ditto. This one bums me out. Size is important, and being able at appropriate times to play two bigs would be great. He would have been that 3rd big to allow that next year. Plus, foul trouble insurance. Plus Reibe will need time to adjust to the college game inside. He’ll find it very physical.

I kind of think he might get higher level interest than many suspect.

The stupidity of all this is now we'll go out and pick someone else up like Singare to fill this spot. It's just musical chairs.
I hear you but it could also be an opportunity. With the open spot, maybe they get a mid 3-star recruit with development potential and higher ceiling. If I recall, Whaley was a late signee that wasn't projected to be a contributor. He ended up being BE Defensive Player of the year.

This sounds like the staff's not convinced Reibe can provide effective minutes backing up Reed, and that YS can't either, so they let him know there won't be much time for him when they bring in a more experienced 5 man.
That fits two things posted here recently: Reibe's had a poor senior year; and we're recruiting a five.

I think you’re reading too much into the tea leaves.

But it makes sense from a roster construction standpoint. Reibe has a lot of development to do, and can be the backup 4 as well as the backup 5 to get him plenty of minutes and facing the basket as well as back to basket experience. That means there may be a lot of minutes at the 5 still to be taken, especially in games where Reed gets in foul trouble. If Singare isn't a guy you can trust with 20 minutes a game at center, then it makes sense to recruit over him.

If we don't need a rim-protecting center, then we can potentially diversify the lineup with a big strong quick but maybe not as tall PF/C. Some of the PFs UConn has been named with in the portal could be centers in a small lineup.

Even if Singare stayed, he was not going to be more than a third center playing emergency minutes. Love what he brought to the team but that much should have been very clear to anyone watching. I just don’t think there’s anything to take away from this transfer other than Singare wanting real PT. Reibe will be the primary backup at C and then my guess is we get a 4/5 in the portal.

It's a different universe with the portal, though. I just don't think anyone with other solid, middle D1 offers would sign on to probably take less NIL and sit on the bench in the spirit of "development." It has to be tough to get any offers when your tape consists of 87 minutes in two years.

For the "mid 3-star recruit," you go to the A10 or AAC or wherever, prove that you can play, then bounce to a high D1 after a year or two. The chance you're going to get that opportunity at a place like UConn, where we're constantly recruiting over you (with players who took the other path), is pretty slim.

In what world do we not need a rim-protecting center? Even Houston has an aggressive shot blocker protecting the paint. I'll be pleasantly surprised if we find another 5 in the portal whose play demands minutes.

Singare always looked good when he was in there in garbage time and sometimes not garbage time. With floor time who knows?
He just understands we have a kid coming in who is going to get the minutes. It would be great to have him as backup though. Injuries happen.

This. 100%.

Outside the top 5-6 players on the roster, the remaining players will be swapping schools every year chasing a couple of extra $$$$$.

Wishing him the best. I really think he can contribute at a level down, even at a place like PC or Seton Hall. With Reed/Reibe the writing was on the wall at UConn. Definitely deserves his shot, he was pretty good when he played.

Any word on where Youssouf wil be playing next season?
