Duh, you guys are all missing the most important point. Unlike Gilbert and Larrier, Brown and Colson were not season-ending injuries waiting to happen, and THAT is the reason why they were such big misses.
Wait a second - you can predict season ending injuries to recruits before they happen? You seriously need to submit your resume to Ollie ASAP.

Always interesting to look back on these. In more cases than not things have worked out for us over the years on targeting the right kids or circumstances playing out where we got the right kid. In the cases of Brown and Colson we blew it, it happens sometimes.

Brown was 26th in ESPN's Top 100.
Mustapha Heron was 25th ... how did he do? Where is he projected? ... oh not projected in the next two drafts?

You lose a lot of credibility bringing Heron into this discussion. Sure he might not be projected in NBA mock drafts like Brown but the kid averaged 15/6 as a freshman and shot 42% from 3...so he did very very well.

not to mention Heron never wanted to come from UConn - people seem to always forget that so bad comparison. Bruce Brown on the other hand had significant interest in UConn.

The point was that no one expected Brown to be this good, and they used mock draft to say "who cares, look how good he is, he's projected in the mock draft"

Bringing up that Heron was higher ranked and not in the mock draft (despite a better season statistically) shows that using mock draft/recruiting rankings is a stupid argument since the Draft doesn't value strictly performance ... not to say that Heron had a bad season (Heron's better season backs my point actually).

Anyway, this has been hashed out way too far. My point was the staff made a decision looking at the roster and decided they didn't need a Combo-2G with an average handle and an average shot, instead getting an AA PG (Gilbert) and later a 2G who could shoot (Vital). Brown blew up long after we had Gilbert signed and even then it wasn't like Duke/UK/Arizona were busting down his door.

If you want to say we still could've and should've taken him, then sure ... hindsight is 20/20. But he wasn't the miss of the century.

Yes,it was the miss of the century (not really) but a big miss nonetheless:

The kid was a Top 30 player that wanted to go to UCONN and we turned him down? Stupid. Especially for a team that regularly plays 3 guards;
