College officials haven't kept up with the game. They don't really call fouls on defenders off the ball. They'll call moving screens against the offense but not the clutching, grabbing and impeding of offensive player movement. They officiate the game like it's still 2002.
Agree. Most people in positions of power (refs, umpire) don't like to have people vilify them in public because it looks like your showing them up. This is especially true when it is repetitive every time you're unhappy with their decisions. It's like an over reactive get even thing from their standpoint because you can't control their behavior. When every or every other call is escalated to outbursts of wrath from a coach its human nature for the ref to not to want to put up with that juvenile type behavior. So the ref puts the coach back into a "powerless" position again and again when decisions are close. They put you back "in the playpen" to demonstrate that you are not in charge. A counselor will say that it is self defeating behavior to a coach. And your players won't look at it as "having their back" (victim/perpetrator/rescuer) because they see it only makes matter worse, not better. IMHO.
I don't know how those glasses have survived. The way he usually pulls them off when frustrated.

There's working the refs which I agree with but Danny takes it to a much greater level including a lot of theatrics. Passionately discussing with the refs is fine. You don't have to put on a show and that's how it looks. Getting T'd isn't inherently bad at all. I think he is aware and is trying to curb it this year quite frankly because that style doesn't work for the good of the team. Just my opinion.
According to his on court interview after the Butler game it sounds like he would too. He thought that UConn should have won by 25-28 points due to Butler's poor shooting, and I agree.
I don't know, Calhoun employed the "tactical technical" from time to time. And at least one occasion, I remember him saying that he followed up in the huddle telling the team "I'm still fighting for you guys. Are you going to fight for yourselves?"
The Calhoun/Blaney coaching collaboration worked out well for us. I think George was often the lead rod that cooled off Calhoun's reactor.
Imagine that Calhoun was a savant as it came to the psychology of the game & athlete of his generation. His secret sauce always seemed to be getting his players to play harder than the other side (other than the 2006 team).
