Shoni Schimmel Traded To The New York Liberty

This is a good thing for both sides, IMO. The Dream know she is not the top flight PG they wanted, and got a high pick for her. The Liberty got the player who may be the best rhythm-changer in the women's game, and I mean the ENTIRE game: WNBA, NCAA, any International league. Frankly, she gives defenses whiplash. In a tight game, there is an enormous amount of value in being able to send this firecracker into the game to wreak havoc.

Bill Laimbeer has REALLY good team. Now he has a derringer in his boot, too. WNBA finals, this year.
He is also a coach that isn't go to take 'I'm still a kid' from anybody - you do it his way or you're out on the trash heap.

I believe one of the Liberty's guards tore her ACL. Not sure which one. So if Shoni can get into the shape she needs to be in, she may be a plus for the Liberty.

RU's Prince. That's a killer....

Sounds right.

What is the success rate for 2nd round picks? I remember looking into this a tiny bit a few years ago and seemed like less than 50% were in the league a year later. If that number is correct - and I could very well be misremembering - then a 2nd rounder is almost a throwaway pick.

I'd have to look, but that's probably about right. Not quite a throwaway - Chicago is probably going to have their 2015 2nd (Betnijah Laney) and 2014 3rd (Jamierra Faulkner) on the opening day roster - but not likely to be of great consequence.

Which is why, upon reflection, I was probably too harsh in my initial thinking about this trade. It's a pretty cheap lottery ticket for Trader Bill. Shoni has starter level talent. But she's more sizzle than steak, imo.

They got a 2nd ROUND pick for her and a pick in that round isn't guaranteed to make the team.
This is why I love the trade for NY no risk high reward. I don't see how this could hurt them at all. You don't get players with this kind of talent for what is most likely a late 2nd round pick. I would bet the player taken does not even make the team. if Shoni does not start she will be a spark off the bench. Again no down side. Shoni may be immature but even then I don't see her being a cancer in the room or anything.

San Antonio also waived Big12 player of the year Brittney Martin.

Count me as surprised. She was one I was sure would make a roster.

Lauren Mincy also waived by Seattle.

Lot of good players may not get a roster spot.

These rosters are so tight and most already have 8 +/- players that are locks to make the roster and another 3 or 4 veterans that have lasted a few years already. And quite a few have high talent previous draft picks/veterans that are coming off injury. If you are not a first round pick your chance of sticking is very low, and about a third of the first rounders are borderline,

He is also a coach that isn't go to take 'I'm still a kid' from anybody - you do it his way or you're out on the trash heap.
Which I think is great for a player like Shoni. Clearly she didn't respond to whatever Atlanta used to try to convince her to get into shape. I hope she realizes the seriousness of the trade - basically she was given to New York (it's unlikely whatever 2nd rounder Atlanta gets makes the roster).

I'm rooting for Shoni, but I have zero sympathy for players who aren't willing to put in the requisite work to succeed. ;)

I was hopin' maybe she would have transferred to UConn.....oh wait.....

If it were possible, the Red Sox would gladly swap Panda Sandoval for Shoni, straight up. Such is the fate of too much weight.
Announced today that Kelis Fisher Panda will have shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the season.

OMG that made me laugh out loud, and that's not an easy thing to do reading posts on the BY. Well played, sir!!

8th overall pick, 2-time all star......for a 2nd round pick?!? How out of shape was she????
Very.

didnt the Dream pick up a good one in this year's draft... I recall fearing Tiffany Hayes spot was in jeopardy

Agreed. I think Mincy is pretty good. Danielle Adams too.

thanks... wonder if that anything to do with the trade, shouldnt have since Schimmel is a point guard, Tiff and Bria are SGs

They were planning on moving Schimmel to shooting guard this year. Basically they traded her because:

a) she came into camp out of shape for the second straight year.

b) They're trying to implement a new more defensive identity. which is why they drafted players like Holmes. Shoni doesn't really fit that with subpar defense and high risk high reward offense.

I'm going to blame fry bread for this one.

So true.

She came to my tribe's reservation last November and gave camps to schools in two of the towns on the rez.

Problem is when a guest visits a rez the locals insist on giving the guest a big feast.

She nay have been doing these all during the offseason!

She needs to get with Maya and Skylar about conditioning and diet...

wait...I've said this before and it went in one ear and out the other.

Yep...Brittany was the one rookie I hoped would make the team (UCONN's are a deadlock to make their teams).

Hope she can stick with another team.

Dream have Simmons on roster ;)

Count me as rooting for Meagan to make the squad. She's just the kind of fearless scorer that Angel can pass to if the other team tries to double team her in a clutch situation.
