Seton HeII Post Game Thread

I don't get this obsession that after a made basket you take yourrr timeeeee, let the ref pick up the ball and give it to youuuuuuu .. AND LET THE OTHER TEAM SET UP THE PRESS. Grab the friggin ball and get it inbounds and stop letting the other team set up their defense.
It makes a lick of sense when you have a moderate to large lead (think 9+ points) and are merely trying to shave seconds. But wholly agree that strategy needs to die once games are within a couple possessions and getting the ball in is the most important thing.

Are you serious??? That was the worst coached game I have witnessed in 48 years of watching Uconn basketball.
Break it down for me. Point by point. What were the specific worst things about it?

That's an awful sign. As if AK hasn't already put way too much pressure on himself this entire season. Anybody have the post game presser? Hurley needs to take this off the players and put it squarely on himself.
Please elaborate.

One stark reality is that there are limits to how effective a coach can be if the players aren't taking the game as seriously as they should, Even the GOAT ended up with a team that never seemed to care as much as he did about the outcome of the games they played.

I vividly remember him calling very early TO's, yelling, screaming, silent treatment, pulling players and making them sit for extended periods, basically every approach possible. As far as I'm concerned, if JC couldn't get the 06 team past George Mason, there may be situations where no coach can get it through their players' heads.

I'll be very careful how I put this but for the most part the freshmen have all received basically what they've earned in terms of playing time.

From a source within the program, of the three freshmen, one (I'm sure you can figure out who) was far more advanced/developed than the staff had expected when he arrived while the other two were nowhere near as advanced/developed as they expected. They admit that with the past couple of years (Karaban, Clingan, Castle) they had been spoiled, They believe in all of the kids but it will take time before they are ready.

I imagine (this is conjecture on my part) that every game coming down to the wire is limiting any opportunities for the kids.
This idea that we should play the freshman because they can’t be any worse is by far the dumbest take ever on this board. By playing kids who aren’t ready, it can get much worse. Then what? The same people crying for Nowell will be crying for Hurley’s head. This is a very flawed team with multiple swings and misses. It happens. But if you read between the tea leaves, in what was supposed the be a gimme game in Newark was far more damning. Dan Hurley trusts 4 kids on this roster. That’s it. And that’s all we need to know moving forward.

The issue when you’re constantly villainizing yourself, is you elicit the opponents best game and look like horses @ss when you get beat by bad teams. This while all other fans rejoice.

Sure he can play the villain and it’s good tv, but it does no good in helping his kids chances to win, which is what matters. After a nightmarish loss like this, he needs to just learn to shut his trap. Tristen Newton isn’t walking through the door.

This season has been so much drama.
It would be super embarrassing to do the talking he was doing this summer combined with his outbursts and not making the tournament after calling himself the best coach in the country.

he needs to come back down to earth I think it would be better in the long run for us

Wait…Don’t you want players who that are accountable for their actions? How is that an “awful” sign? Hurley can’t cover for them all the time…

Maybe having it bite them in the collective arse against the worst team in the league will finally be the wake up call they need.

Then they make mistakes that you then have the opportunity to teach them to fix so that they can improve. If they have upside, this helps their development so they can begin that process of getting better.

They aren’t going to get better sitting on the bench

If you weren’t already furious. Get a load of this quote from our CAPTAIN:

I kind of love it tbh. He is obviously calling out certain players without naming names. My guess is Solo, Stewart, and Reed. They are always so soft with the ball, which is an effort problem.

I know AK has struggled this season, but at no point did I think he wasn't giving it his all. I can't say the same for the 3 guys named above.

I don’t completely disagree. I more so just trying to plug holes instead of engaging in a complete roster overhaul. We have 3 MCDAA coming in next season, Ball will be back, I’d expect Stewart and Ross back, as well as Ahmad and Abraham. How do we build around that group? I think by adding size and physicality at the guard and wing spots. I think a successful off season would start with adding a big stud at the guard spot. And just hope and pray that Reed, Ball, Stewart, Ross, Ahmad and Abraham get. better
I expect major changes next year sprinkled with a few surprises. The staff missed on many fronts and I doubt they are willing to make that mistake twice.

What have we put, 7 players into the NBA over the past two years? Need to give Hurley a chance to reload. And he's doing that next year with 3 McDonald's All-Americans plus a supposed stud from overseas. This team is young and not super talented. Not untalented, but not super talented. And unfortunately, AK is having a tough year. To be competitive with the top teams, this roster would need him to be playing like a first team All-American. That's just not been the case this year. Hurley is not the greatest X's & O's coach out there but he's obviously proven he has what it takes to get the job done at the highest level better than just about anybody out there. I suspect he will turn this around and we'll see a much more competitive product next year.
2023 was suppose to be a great class and the board is ready to give up on 3/5 players.

2024 was suppose to be great and only one guy can see the floor.

I have no expectations for 2025 as there’s a pattern of freshman not being able to contribute unless they are lottery pick talents.

Hurley spending the offseason talking 3 peat did his players no favors. He likes to get in peoples faces with his past success but it was in the past. He is finding that out. Pumping up players preseason that have done nothing was a mistake. We made mistakes today that he should be embarrassed by. There are no easy games left and wins are essential. No more excuses.

I’ll stand on the Stewart island alone. And I will be vindicated :)

He’s better than Ross but neither jumped out at us thus far. Honestly Stew has shown more potential and I don’t think it’s close. Roster needs to change, get more athletic for sure and Dans loyalty needs to do the same. You can’t make everyone championship caliber or UConn caliber. Abraham and Nowell both should have had more opportunities with the way some of these guys played.

I have fudged up a game less coaching with a raging hangover than what I saw Hurley do today. That was an abomination of a game by Hurley. I don't think Hurley could have booted it today worse if he was trying to lose this game.

Diarra should not have played today. Either Mahaney has to step up, or play 2 bigs. Diarra looks like he can barely walk.

McNeeley is a great player, but Hurley has to find a way for him to be great that does not require hero ball. The 1 on 2 cliff dive drives are a waste of his ability, and result in games like this.

Everyone has a bad day at work every now and then. Hurley can't have another like this one or UConn's season may be over. Next game.

What a rank embarrassment... This is as bad as it gets. The coaches look like extras in a 3 Stooges episode.

The most losses a Big East team had in the tourney last year was 9. We are currently at 8 with Nova, St John’s, and Marquette still left to play plus the BET.

We honestly can’t afford anymore slip ups unless we play on winning the BET.

This is worse than the Colorado loss. Colorado is a bad team, but Maui and back-to-backs are factors. No excuses for not closing this pathetic Seton Hall team TWICE in 1 game. Worst loss in the Hurley era. Will really hurt our Tourney seeding.

Yeah he never looks to drive or try to post up which I think he can do. We need him to step up offensively as we are challenged when not making our outside shots.
I was Stewart #1 fan for awhile but he continues to fade away at key points of the game / also misses some key shots / defensive assigments.

It’s almost like he wants it but not really.

There are times a player like him could blend in but not this year - all hands on deck.

If he can’t engage for longer parts of the game, next man up.

This is UConn. The bluest of blue bloods. That doesn’t bode well here. Hurley can’t be more blatant. He was even quoted recently that this time of year, you play who can help you win. Look at today’s box score. Mahaney and Ross had 4 minutes, Reed had 9, Stewart 18(because Diarra was hobbled). That says all you need to know what he thinks of our bench.
This is an elite staff who made some mistakes this year. With their success, we can live with that. There is no doubt in my mind they will make the necessary adjustments this offseason. But again, if you aren’t playing now, with this team, there is a reason why. If you are looking to develop on the court, drop down a level.

How many quad 1 road wins did last years teams have? The resume is fine. They will get in. It most likely will be short lived.

Hurley expected shots to fall, his team to turn up intensity, and eventually, the superior team to take over. For the most part that happened. The poor execution at the end was equal blame. Hurley deserves some of it for sure. But don’t absolve the players. They were awful today.
