In many games we see some level of bad officiating but this game? OMG whole sections of prudential center including seton hall fans alike felt the refs let this one get out of control. Mainly it was Gaffney though.

It was one of the worst officiated game I've seen in some time. From the jump they decided not to call any SH bumping, reaching in and grabbing off the ball. They started to blow their whistle on some of it in the second half, but the damage was already done empowering the Seton Hall players to make it a rock fight throughout most of the game.

And it was another example where the officiating was called differently on each end of the floor. There were some touch fouls that were called against UConn where moments earlier on the other end of the floor there was much more physical contact by the Pirates that was ignored. I remember Hurley going out of his mind during one sequence where that happened.

I usually prefer to watch a game we're less fouls are called, but not when the game turns into a wrestling match where neither the players nor the fans I want to witness. At least 30 minutes of that game was not much fun to watch whatsoever.

I don't know about any of you, but down the stretch of that game, I couldn't wait for it to be over and was praying that it would not go into overtime. That can't be good for the Big East to have that type of product.

Does the leadership of the Big East have any meetings or calls with the officials to discuss how games are being called? It seems the way that games are called in various conferences aren't all the same.

Went to the game last night with my daughter. I've gone to most of the games at Prudential and Byrne/Continental/Izod before that. Prior arena was much easier for me to get to, but I like the Prudential. This is the first UConn win I've seen at the Prudential (including at least one non-SHU game)!

There were plenty of UConn fans, but pretty quiet fans on the whole. Fans behind the basket got a few U-C-O-N-Ns in and "Let's go Huskies" for a minute. But the SHU fans were definitely louder. I'm sure their students were a big part of that. I'm surprised that we don't get more UConn fans at these games. I guess it's more difficult than getting to MSG, but the tickets are easier to get, you can get there by train, and it's not that hard to get to/park by car. I'm sure Tuesday made it tougher. If anyone isn't going because they are afraid of Newark, the area really isn't bad and has a few good bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Nah..I wasnt making a player comp, thatd be silly. I was making a fan base comp. We gave up on AJax and relegated him to the end of the bench. January-february 23 we were going through an awful time where Hurley was scared for his job and our #1 player target was AJax.

I wouldn’t say any of that. Andre was playing out of position which was the fundamental problem. Teams were literally (and yes I do know what literally means) dropping off him and letting him take 3 pointers because he couldn’t hit the Atlantic Ocean with a handful of peanuts if he was sitting in the middle of it. It was embarrassing. Then he moved inside and his athleticism was on full display.

Ball is completely different player. Even in his current slump nobody is ignoring him at the arc. He can and has gone off and scored in bunches. He is not nearly the rebounder, defender or overall player that Jackson was.

I hope he comes around but you need to go with Plan B which I guess is mostly Stewart. At his best he isn’t as good as Ball at his. Problem is that Ball is not playing well so he needs to be relegated to a lesser minute guy. It isn’t because nobody like him or because he is being used as a whipping boy or any such thing. It is solely because the way he is playing now is hurting the team. If he comes out of his current slump he will likely play more.

I thought many hard fouls were not called and even when Braylon got absolutely decked on a made 3 I looked at Gaffney to see if he would even blow the whistle.

I would say the game got unsafe in the 2nd half but silently I was hoping for OT with Clark and Payne out and Hines with 4 fouls it was gonna be all Reed vs guys much shorter than him.

Mullins was starting to groove late as well.

There's no conspiracy. They're just bad at their jobs, and the way they tend to call games is more impactful for us given our style of play.

A few observations from someone that was there, so I didn't hear the commentary:

• SHU absolutely plays super physical and dares the refs to call everything. At home they get away with more because their fans and Shaheen flip out on every call unless there's a tooth knocked out.
• They are very good at finding that line that the refs will allow. You can see when they went too far, a foul was called. But if they kept it to a bump and tug rather than a full push or hold, it was allowed.
• Now a comments, not observation. I've seen people here say that the Big East should protect UConn as the flagship program. I get that, but I also think they want to get at least 4 teams in the tournament, and that would have been greatly helped with a Seton Hall win. The ACC always seems to have their bubble teams get miraculous upsets when necessary and if we're going conspiracy theory, that can explain SHU getting a favorable whistle.
• Regarding whether the Big East should allow this type of play, I don't think they care. I've seen 0 conference-wide leadership, messaging, etc. The leadership is mid-major level (and not even good mid-major leadership). Furthermore, my guess is the Big East likes what UConn brings, but they don't like us because of the institutional differences and clear desire to leave asap. The Big East would be happy to have any of the other schools dethrone UConn.

Do not allow any holding off the ball since that results in ugly execution for the offensive teams. Stop calling the incidental minor reach ins and bumps in the perimeter. Don't allow teams to body and grab the ball handler. One incidental bump is okay but constantly bumping the player with the ball should get called. Many of these things impede the flow of the game which should be discouraged. Those are my two cents.

I don’t buy the conspiracy against UConn, but I would bet anything (metaphorically, no pun intended) that there are quite a few officials conspiring with people they trust outside the game to place bets on their behalf. There’s simply no way that’s not happening, in my opinion. Idk how much money they make for their work, but I imagine many of them think it’s not nearly enough for the crap they take from coaches and players who now all make so much more than them (I’m guessing), when they are also an essential piece of the product that produces billions.

I’d also bet that most of them don’t do this at all, but for how easy it would be to make a little extra here and there for what it’s worth, it’s definitely going on.

I didn't feel bad for Katz per se, but I did think that part of Hurley's response was way too chip-on-his-shouldery given UConn's undisputed position at the very top of the college basketball hierarchy again. Nobody doubts Dan Hurley anymore. Dude could be coach of the Lakers or Kentucky right now if he'd wanted to, and he's already a likely hall-of-famer. It sounded like he'd been thinking about this little losing streak way too much or something (which would be on-brand for him, I suppose), and unloaded on Katz.

I would have hoped for Danny to say something like, "Well, we won here back in 2020 in front of like a thousand people with masks on, which was actually a great win for us. But yeah, this is a tough place to play, and it goes to show you the quality of the Big East when we can roll through the NCAA tournament two years in a row with 12 dominant wins, but not be able to win here," or something to that effect. That accomplishes two goals -- talk up UConn, but also talk up the Big East and Seton Hall, his alma mater.

Wow. You ought to be a speechwriter. Can we shrink you and put you on Danny's shoulder for the interviews?

Don't discount the degenerate gambler fans who are losing money when UConn fails to cover the spread. UConn has been awful against the spread this year and it leads to the narrative they're playing as well as they should.

From a non-gambler perspective, the team's inability to close out games and finish the game with a large lead the team built in the first 30 minutes, lends itself to a team without a killer instinct. Throw in inconsistent 3 pt shooting games and inconsistent FT shooting games and it gives fans angst on how that can knock UConn out of the tourney when they run in to a team that doesn't beat itself.

I think it says just as much about us that we can withstand a team putting a big run on us without folding and giving up the win.

Dan said he was fully healthy last night. I know his numbers were good except free throws but I felt he played “soft” last night. He had a chance to power dunk a few last night and didn’t. Don’t get that. Big dunks can lift a team! I totally understand Dan wanting him to “unleash the bear” but don’t think we’ll see that from him unfortunately. The lack of beast mode is what is holding him back from being all american caliber player. The question I don’t know the answer to is why?

Simple, Tarris is a teddy bear not a Kodiak or grizzly. He and the coaching staff have to work hard to bring out the nasty everyone wants! It’s not his nature to be a bad ass, but he will when he really has to.
