This is an old strategy. Pitino's Louisville teams did the same thing. Many others have played this way over the years. Nolan Richardson did it at Arkansas did it too back in the day (40 minutes of hell). It can definitely be used to spring an upset of a more talented team and if your team is deep, you can spread the fouls. But you're not winning a tournament with that style of play. St. Johns last year is an example. He's learned to game the system by the fact that the refs won't call fouls on his guys more than 40% of possessions. Every un-called foul they commit beyond that is a boon to his defense.
Unfortunately eventually could mean next year. Someone else pointed out the similarity to AK's struggles last year. The good news is that AK still found ways to help the team even when his 3 ball wasn't falling. Solo needs to do the same. He certain was until the last few games so no reason to think he won't. And its not like he hasn't done anything good. I thought he rebounded the ball well. That dunk was nice. When he does figure out how to impact the game more efficiently, it will just make us stronger.Solo is a good scorer without the threes falling. He’s at 14 points a game despite shooting 29% from three. He was a pretty reliable 14-20 point scorer for most of the season until Providence even while missing his threes
It’s the 3 games since then where his two point game hasn’t been enough to counter him not making threes. The automatic midrange jumpers and strong finishing at the rim hasn’t been there. It’s clearly not a skill or gameplan issue. He’s in a mental funk. Good thing about mental funks is that they eventually end
Solo has been great at positioning for rebounds, bringing the ball up court, some well timed blocks, scrambling for the loose ball.Unfortunately eventually could mean next year. Free throws and inbounding the ball. That’s about it for complaints. Team fouls too much, which led to an absolute slog in the second half.
They could use more of Demary driving late in the clock. He remains the best and only one off the dribble. Love the offense, but officials in big east allow too much grabbing off ball. Hard to get open.
We're spoiled and entitled. There is NOTHING to be upset about. If you're nitpicking about FT shooting or Solo's 3 pt %, you're just bored or completely spoiled or both.I've been thinking about why people are still down on a 17-1 team and it always comes back to one thing: anxiety.
I think many absolutely hate the physical anguish/anxiety of these tight games. We loved the 23 and 24 ncaa tourneys because we just cruised thru every game. This year's team can clearly win it all but we may have to sweat. People dont like to sweat (see the women's board)
After last night, Solo has officially lost his spot as the PPG leader
Tarris: 14.5 points at 62.1%
Solo: 14.4 at 43.3% and 28.8% from three
Karaban: 13.9 at 50% and 43.9% from three
Braylon: 11.7 at 48.2% and 37.9% from three
Silas: 10.1 at 46.8% and 41.2% from three
This team can beat you in so many different ways
I agree. There are some extreme views. It's not like Solo has forgotten how to play basketball. And many have short memories of some of the good performances this season on both ends of the floor. We all criticize players. But this goes beyond. To say a guy is unplayable or shouldn't play is just absurd. Don't play Tristen Newton, don't play Andre Jackson, don't play Alex Karaban, now don't play Solo Ball. This stuff is getting old. And no, it's not being a real fan. So says I.
100%I’ve stopped listening to the spaces. All it is now is that loser account NoEscalators crying about the metrics.
I think Malachi is close than we think to being a threat to get in the lane and score(??) or dish. I saw glimmers of a really helpful backup PG last night. A little more playing time and confidence.Free throws and inbounding the ball. That’s about it for complaints. Team fouls too much, which led to an absolute slog in the second half.

If someone is actually "unplayable," which is a word thrown around way too often here, there's a simple answer -- they don't play. We have 15 guys on the roster. If a starter is unplayable, someone else gets those minutes. We all criticize players. But this goes beyond. To say a guy is unplayable or shouldn't play is just absurd. Didn’t he lead the Big East last year in 3 pt shooting %?
I’ve had the privilege of seeing Tarris live in a few games so far and last night his demeanor, lack of dunking, walking to and from the bench he seemed 75% IMHO.It was frustrating watching Tarris miss all those free throws but keep in mind, his getting to the line so much put SH in foul trouble and changed how they defended us. He also missed some and-one free throws which don't hurt as much. But hopefully going forward he can shoot >60%. He seems to have a decent stroke. Hopefully just an anomaly.
To Holloway's credit, he took a ragtag group of players from the discount rack and cobbled them into a successful team. Aggressive defense makes up for a lot of shortcomings on offense. Seton halls version likely won't translate well to the postseason though. On the other hand, just getting to the dance is a shot in the arm that their program needed. This isn’t an anti-Hurley thing, SHU pretty consistently gets this whistle. Their whole gameplan is to dare the refs to call every foul. They’re also not really dependent on offensive skill, so it’s easy to go deep into their bench to manage foul trouble.
The word "unplayable" is clearly hyperbole. People exaggerate when they are frustrated to emphasize their frustration, which in turn makes literalists more frustrated and criticize, sometimes with hyperbole of their own, with statements like, "they aren't real fans." It is a vicious cycle. At some point you just have to be the adult and stop. That's not a criticism of you, just a general observation. If someone is actually "unplayable," which is a word thrown around way too often here, there's a simple answer -- they don't play. The coaching staff doesn't think someone getting 31 minutes is unplayable.
Exactly. One of the best 3 point shooters in the country last year. Could be his wrist is bothering him but he will find his shot soon. In the meantime he is contributing in many ways"He's never been a really good three point shooter" is an all time take. After November of his freshman year, he was around 45%. He was over 40 last year.
The random cr@p that people post here is incredible.
And good for the big east and thus good for UConn. If they get in they are probably 1 of 4, which is more than some are predicting. To Holloway's credit, he took a ragtag group of players from the discount rack and cobbled them into a successful team. As did the defense.Offense disappeared the last 6 min
In some ways last night's result is the best of all possible worlds. Sometimes people talk about a "good loss" as a teaching tool. This game will give Hurley a ton of film to work with, but we still ended up with the "W".

Absolutely correct. Aside from Louisville, this is why UConn had to carry the conference in the Tournament for decades. Pitt is another famous example. This is an old strategy. I feel dumber for reading thisTechnically true, but you should. When you miss the first, you essentially miss them both. You shouldn't be rewarded for forfeiting the second shot. It is the same result as if you missed both on a shooting foul.
Donyell and Ray were definitely playable. No hyperbole!
Doesn't it bother you more when someone misses the front end of a one and one?I feel dumber for reading this
