September 2019 WNBA Discussions, scores, game info, pictures

Noted. I assume all of these choices were available to Toler at the time she decided to hire Fisher. Whether or not they would have accepted is another story. However, I get your point. The right coach can make a difference, but you've also got to have the right players too to be successful.

It will be interesting to see if Fisher is retained for next season, and if Parker returns.

Clearly hiring Fisher was at least in part a PR move to get some NBA / Laker name recognition and buzz. I am not as negative as many here on him . His Knick stint was horrible beause he never even had 1 second of coaching experience and I imagine he learned alot and matured alot. I still think most of the players did not come to play and you should not have to explain why you are sitting a player if they did not come to play in an elimination game. And he said as much on the sideline which is gutsy.

Not sure of xxx-ooo skills but clearly the team seemd to have combustible personalities and egos under the surface and so many changes to the roster .

I suppose he will be the scape goat and be pushed out.

Playing devil's advocate...

Los Angeles went 22-12, good for 3rd place in the WNBA (and only one game out of 2nd place), with Candace Parker missing 12 game, Riquna Williams missing 11 games, Alana Beard missing 18 games, and Maria Vadeeva (the teams sixth leading scorer, at 7.8 ppg) missing 19 games.

As an aside, Lin Dunn (since her name was brought up) only won 22 games (and that amount exactly) twice in her 17 years in the WNBA, both of which were with Indiana.

LA had a bad playoff series against Connecticut. For starters, LA's roster has far too many post players whose skills duplicate one another instead of complementing each other. In addition, whereas Alyssa Thomas has been a complementary secondary facilitator to Jasmine Thomas, this year's version of Candace Parker seemed to clash with Chelsea Gray in terms of playmaking. The construction of the team was done by GM Penny Toler, not Coach Derek Fisher.

As another aside, LA went 19-15 last year, so this year represents a three-win improvement.

I cannot fathom a situation where a coach, in his first season, finishes 3rd out of 12 teams (and 1st in the Western Conference), wins 65 percent of his games, makes a significant improvement on the previous year's record and standing, yet is fired (absent any misconduct or off-the-court allegations/situations).

Bad chemistry. Remember the observation that Sylvia Fowles made about this year's Minnesota Lynx roster?
She said "This year's roster doesn't have any knuckleheads on it". Good karma, good chemistry.

Did you personally think playing Parker 11 minutes and pulling his best players early in the 4th was justified assuming the goal was to win an elimination game? Not challenging, just curious.

It so funny how people don't think the Sun are that good. I don't know what you are looking at. Jones has had multiple 20-20 games, leading the league in rebounds and blocks . Alyssa Thomas is an unquestioned physical force. Courtney Williams is a super star in the making. Shekinna Stricklen won the 3 point contest. And Jasmine Thomas is pretty good when she needs to be, like in this last game. I guess some people will only see how good they are after they celebrate. I see it now.

Anyway, a lot of games are won on the boards. CT was 2nd in the league in rebounds and they dominated the Sparks there. The Aces were first, but they haven't the defense or offense to compete with the Sun. If they beat the Mystics, I think the Sun will make Jackie Young take a whole lot of shots. Let's see if she can hit enough shots in a 5 game series. I doubt it. By the way, the Mystics were ranked 10 of 12 on the boards this year. Horrible. The first WNBA championship in franchise history is coming to CT.

The Tony C of Sun basketball?

What is going on with Washington? This is not the same team I've been seeing most of the season. EDD is carrying the team, everybody, and I do mean everybody else looks out of sync. Maybe the Aces are playing really good defense, but I've definitely seen plenty of wide open shots missed the last 1 1/4 game.

Aces up 26-17 after Q1.

Cambage and Wilson aren't hitting shots today like the last game.

So I would guess you haven't been watching the Aces at all in the playoffs. J. Young has been playing very limited minutes compared to the regular season. Trying to force her to take shots might prove to be very difficult if she's on the bench.

edited--averaged 22.5 mpg during the regular season, dropped way down to 12.4 mpg thru 4 playoff games

Cambage and Wilson stink this game. Hamby much better than either of them so far.

Mystics surged from 10 down to up 2 at halftime. EDD playing like an MVP and starting to get some help from her teammates.

Hamby and T. Young gave the Aces a boost off the bench. Wilson has to do something (no FG) and Cambage has to quit missing bunnies.

I will give you Wilson but Cambage is holding her own. The difference is EDD who is earning her MVP.

How many shots has she missed from point blank range? Too many. She's 4-10 but definitely should have at least 2 or 3 more FG. She is grabbing rebounds at least.

Q3 got off to a good start, best combined stretch of play by both teams. So of course we need to stop the game for a lengthy review of a possible elbow.

Okay, here I go w/ my conspiracy theories again. Plum only has 1 assist but her teammates are missing shots every damn time she passes them the ball.

Cambage has a pretty jump shot. She is very strong so her shot is like a minimal flick of the wrist (like an EDD foul shot).

Toliver is going off in Q3. Wilson is still a no show. That's troubling, 2 of the last 3 games she's really struggled.

Fastest 3 second call ever just saved Toliver from picking up her 4th foul.

Aces on 8-0 run just taking the lead.

.-.
Aces came from 7 down to grab the lead briefly.

68-67 LV after 3Q.

It's nice that this series has actually been competitive, compared to the other one that was a joke.

Unlike the Sparks, the Aces compete. Should be a barn-burner 4th Q

Mystics are on fire behind the arc in Q4.

edit--4-5 I think

up 81-74

Meesseeman struggled for about a game and a half, but she's going nuts in the 4th quarter.

I think there were 5 empty possessions in a row, Meesseman finally hit a bucket. 91-88 Mystics w/ about 30 seconds left.

.-.
91-90 15.9 seconds left, Mystics inbounding. Both teams in the bonus now.

Hamby's 3 rattled out. So close. 93-90 Mystics shooting FTs 2.7 seconds left. Well it was an entertaining series anyway.

I'll guarantee Washington isn't going to lay down and die and let the Sun do whatever they want the way LA did.

25 for EDD, 22 for Meesseman and 20 for Toliver.

25 for Cambage, 18 for Hamby and 17 for Plum.
