Certainly Fulwiley of last season was a much better defender than offensive player.

Dawn tried the PG thing but it did not noticeably improve her decision making.

I think Fulwiley is a better talent than Van Lith but Van Lith certainly was more consistent (when not playing point). Van Lith tried to do what she was asked.

Maybe Mulkey will be better equipped since it's stop 2.

You also missed Sa'Myah Smith who was a solid producer during her time at LSU. This also conveniently ignores the fact that they just signed the #1 class for the upcoming season.

For most of the last decade she's basically recruiting via the transfer portal and every year tries to take a SG and convert them to be a point guard:
Chloe Jackson
Te'a Cooper
Khayla Pointer (not a transfer but only 1 year under Mulkey)
Alexis Morris
Hailey Van Lith
Shyanne Day-Wilson
Now Milaysia Fulwiley

She did an incredible job her first few years but the Hailey Van Lith experiment was definitely a fail and so was Day-Wilson this past year. Fulwiley playing point is a bit of a head scratcher to me. She's incredibly skilled but not a good decision maker and putting her at point removes some of her scoring aggressiveness which is one of her biggest strengths. We'll see what happens.

Hailey Van Lith’s college finale at TCU proved she can play point guard on a top ten team if not a true contender, but she is limited athletically and that made the SEC a poor fit from the start. Day-Wilson definitely wasn’t successful either but her career was somewhat of an enigma overall, she looked like a future scoring monster her freshman year at Duke and then just never matched that level of performance again anywhere else.

To your point though Fulwiley isn’t a natural PG and never showed the consistency or discipline needed to play that position. I suspect Kim knows that but also knows that she has superior shooting guards in Flau’jae and Mikaylah Williams so Fulwiley will be the one to run the show.

LSU is really intriguing to me this year. Their athleticism is off the charts and they’ve got a ton of talent, but the roster is as imbalanced as much as any top 25 team other than maybe USC. The SEC is a minefield with 5 teams that could live in the top 10 most of the year so we’ll see how they fare.

My point was her high school recruiting has been a bit inconsistent which is why they have been a bit overly dependent on the portal but they are far from the only ones

Day Wilson wasn’t bad necessarily as a defender or even in the assist to turnover ratio but her offense was beyond horrific so she hindered the team because she couldn’t make a shot. I believe she averaged like 4 PPG on like 30% shooting getting 30 min a game, that is not good enough at this level.

I personally don't care for Mulkey(the person) but facts are facts. I expect she'll get at least one or two from 2026 class before all is said and done.

Meier (at Miami) converted her into a point guard and that was a good idea because surprisingly she was not much of a scorer which I think was a surprise after her time at Duke.

This reminds me of her head-scratching statement about "There are five post players every day battling.” referring to the present team. 5?!! Who the heck is she talking about?!!

Day-Wilson has been considered a point guard since high school. Scoring has been known as her strong suit up until recently. She averaged over 12 points a game when she earned Freshman of the Year honours. When she played for Meier, she averaged just over 11 points a game. The difference is minimal.

With respect to her not being much of a scorer, I'm assuming you're referring to her LSU season, correct? Her challenges with scoring this year both in college and with Canada Basketball has been perplexing. Whether it's shot selection, shooting technique, or something else, it's not because of a change in playing position from my perspective.

I was stunned at how discombobulated the Seminoles are. Hero ball for the entire game - a total of five assists. Only ten players total, of which only two are returnees from last year's team. Perhaps a case study in the trials and tribulations of the transfer portal.

Coach Brooke Wyckoff certainly has her work cut out for her with the home opener less than three weeks away and then off to UConn a week after that.

Alabama looks surprisingly good for an early exhibition. Very impressed with the two-time Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year, Ace Austin. Very smooth player with good court awareness - does not seemed phased by the jump to college.

I agree with your assessment of both teams. Florida State is a team that has counted on high-power offense, and they surely don't look to have the horses for that syle this season. That pump-and-pray offense they ran today doesn't look very good when you don't hit shots, but it did look better than their defense and rebounding. Also, it looks like they're going to struggle in the front court. Other than a slender, 6'6 JUCO transplant, they don't seem to have any effective size.

Bama also surprised me. They've gotten bigger, and Essence Cody looks like she is finally becoming a legit SEC post. With Sarah Ashlee Barker and Aliyah Nye off to the WNBA, I was hoping the Tide would take a bigger step back than I saw today. The guards are good. Diana Collins (by way of Ohio State, by way of Georgia high school, by way of a Swedish mother who was an outstanding player) looked very good, and you are spot on about the freshman, Ace Austin. I have a feeling she'll be a pain in our butt for the next four years, but we've got a little pain-in-the-butt freshman point guard of our own (Aubrey Galvan) to offset her. 😀

Whew! Basketball is getting close.

D2 Maryville won the exhibition on MO's home floor -- 90-84.
 
And that was after they got stuffed in a locker by Nebraska in a secret scrimmage.

They did have some players unavailable vs Maryville, but still...

While that's certainly true, once you get past the top 7-8, the bottom of the SEC is truly miserable. I can see the bottom 2 in the league winning only one or 2 conference games.

9-12 is probably Alabama, Miss State and Georgia which probably won't be terrible at all.

I'd match those up against most any league.
 
Well, genuinely have not worried about foul trouble anytime lately and looks like that might be a thing now.

Hopefully this team will play its best basketball down the stretch.
