Caught a tired Michigan team, but a good win on the post season resume. Lots to like from the pitching staff and some of the new guys.

Great win for the team today. Very impressed with the pitching staff this weekend. Have to say I haven't laughed that hard in awhile as when the catcher on the throw down to second drilled the pitcher in the rear end. That was some funny stuff.

Boy the pitching looks Penders tough. Guys competing and not giving in. Coach Mac is gonna be happy on the way home the way his boys showed up in Arizona.

UConn pitching staff came out of the weekend with a 2.00 ERA. It's just one weekend of play, but there was a lot to like about the performance of the pitching staff over the three games. Three very good outings by the starters, and a bunch of nice performances out of the bullpen, led by Kenny Haus and his 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. We'll see in the upcoming weeks if Haus has taken a big leap forward over last season, but what he did was very encouraging. Also, very solid relief appearances for Will Lucas, Caleb Wurster, Andrew Marrero, and Max Nielsen as well. Also, mix in Justin Willis when he comes back and perhaps some others. Coach Penders has been talking about this turning into a pitching staff with some quality depth to it, and this weekend we caught what could be a whiff of it.

Also, Mayock who I thought was impressive last year.

Chris Jones was having some fun with this incident during the radio broadcast.

“Coach Erik Bakich isn’t going to overreact to Michigan’s Opening Weekend success, just like he wouldn’t have had things gone the other way. But he said he comes away feeling good about the way the Wolverines played in Arizona.

“I think we knew going into the weekend that if we came out of this weekend 4-0, we’re probably not as good as we seem and if we came out 0-4, we’re probably not as bad as we seem,” he said.

It would have been hard to script a better start to the season. Michigan started with an Opening Day win against Vanderbilt in a rematch of last year’s College World Series finals. Redshirt senior Matt Schmidt played hero with a two-run home run in the ninth inning to give the Wolverines a 4-3 victory.

They followed that up with an 8-5 victory Saturday against Cal Poly. The lineup, led by shortstop Jack Blomgren (4-for-6, 2 R), combined for 13 hits and six walks. Michigan then got on a bus to head across town to Phoenix Municipal Stadium to play the back half of its split doubleheader. Led by six scoreless innings from lefthander Steve Hajjar, the Wolverines silenced the Sun Devils’ powerful lineup in a 5-0 victory.

A reality check came Sunday morning with a 7-1 loss to UConn in the Commodores’ third game in 24 hours. Still, the Wolverines left Arizona feeling good about their start to the season.”

One thing I've noticed about college baseball polls the last few years is that they can be all over the map. Teams that are highly rated in one poll may barely register in the rankings in another.

Backs to the wall, great win. Two more errors. We never had a long winning streak last year, be nice to have one this year.

Chris Jones interviews with Penders and players after the Michigan game on Sunday. Penders says Christian Fedko will be staying in the three spot in the lineup. I wonder how long it might take to move Reggie Crawford right behind Christian in the cleanup spot in the lineup. It looks like it will only be a matter of time.

Some stuff on Uconn:

>As a whole, the Huskies struggled offensively Opening Weekend with a .151 team batting average, but freshman two-way talent Reggie Crawford certainly stood out. Crawford is an impressive looking 6-foot-3, 219-pounder, who looks the part as a player and prospect. On the mound, he’ll sit in the low 90s with his fastball. But this past weekend, it was his bat that did the talking. Crawford showed a mature approach and finished the weekend with a .300 average, a double and five RBIs. His performance in the final game against Michigan led the Huskies to a big victory. Crawford was No. 2 on our Impact Freshmen list and looked the part in his debut with the program. Big days are ahead for Crawford.

You could really see the potential in Reggie Crawford,” UConn head coach Jim Penders said. “He has a really sound offensive approach and when he goes opposite field, he dares you to take him away so he can get you to come back inside on him. He’s capable of doing both — he can go opposite field and he can hit it on the inner half as well.<

>• Though Penders was disappointed with the offense throughout the weekend, he was encouraged by Crawford and Ben Maycock. Maycock had a big weekend at the plate, leading the team with a .333 average and showing some serious power, hitting a home run and finishing the weekend with a .429 OBP. On the flip side, he said it’s important for veteran Chris Winkel to get going. Winkel scuffled at the plate in the three games, not getting a hit in 11 at bats, while also striking out six times.

“Ben Maycock. He hits with some thunder,” Penders said. “We need him to hit and be a force for us, that’s for sure. He’s not been consistent in the past, and he had some consistent at bats over the weekend. He did a really nice job. But we have to get Chris [Winkel] going. He had a really good preseason and a rough weekend. We just need to get him back in the cage and shorten some things up. We’ve got to be better. I think we struck out 35 times over the weekend.”<
