Some stuff on Uconn:
>As a whole, the Huskies struggled offensively Opening Weekend with a .151 team batting average, but freshman two-way talent Reggie Crawford certainly stood out. Crawford is an impressive looking 6-foot-3, 219-pounder, who looks the part as a player and prospect. On the mound, he’ll sit in the low 90s with his fastball. But this past weekend, it was his bat that did the talking. Crawford showed a mature approach and finished the weekend with a .300 average, a double and five RBIs. His performance in the final game against Michigan led the Huskies to a big victory. Crawford was No. 2 on our Impact Freshmen list and looked the part in his debut with the program. Big days are ahead for Crawford.
You could really see the potential in Reggie Crawford,” UConn head coach Jim Penders said. “He has a really sound offensive approach and when he goes opposite field, he dares you to take him away so he can get you to come back inside on him. He’s capable of doing both — he can go opposite field and he can hit it on the inner half as well.<
>• Though Penders was disappointed with the offense throughout the weekend, he was encouraged by Crawford and Ben Maycock. Maycock had a big weekend at the plate, leading the team with a .333 average and showing some serious power, hitting a home run and finishing the weekend with a .429 OBP. On the flip side, he said it’s important for veteran Chris Winkel to get going. Winkel scuffled at the plate in the three games, not getting a hit in 11 at bats, while also striking out six times.
“Ben Maycock. He hits with some thunder,” Penders said. “We need him to hit and be a force for us, that’s for sure. He’s not been consistent in the past, and he had some consistent at bats over the weekend. He did a really nice job. But we have to get Chris [Winkel] going. He had a really good preseason and a rough weekend. We just need to get him back in the cage and shorten some things up. We’ve got to be better. I think we struck out 35 times over the weekend.”<
