I love Dan Hurley but I think he really needs to address why Sanogo sat and I don't know that I want to hear "match-up issues". We're the better team, let them adjust to us.

The defenders were not in position to help because of the spacing. That's the whole point of spacing.

Is sj a high percentage shooting 3pt team? The team should choose to shut one thing down, not be mediocre at a couple things.

St John’s played 5 shooters. 4 guards and 1 SF.

They played 5 out the last 8 minutes of the game, meaning all 5 players outside the three point line.

That’s why you saw no help defense, because all 5 were shooters and had to be guarded at the 3 point line.

Whaley is our fastest recoverer on help D, if he couldn’t get there you think Sanogo could? Imagine Sanogo trying to guard a driver from the 3pt line? If Polley is getting blown by, you think Sanogo won’t?

If you go 2-3 Zone and park Sanogo in the middle youre daring a team shooting 50% from three in the game to make threes.

Obviously there’s an edge on the offensive end, but not nearly enough to warrant playing him. You get touch around the rim but lose a ball handler.

What you’re saying makes sense on paper but UConn was out scored 33 to 21 over the last 12:45 once Sanogo was pulled. The lineup didn’t work. You might as well put Sanogo in to bully them down low and make St John’s be the ones to adjust.

So instead we chose to play into their game plan to our detriment and still couldn't stop them. When that happens, you adjust.

Make them pay defensively by going into the post against their small lineup.

Inexcusable to not make any adjustments as our lead evaporated and became a deficit.

SJ had 7 fouls at that point as well. We would have scored every single time if we kept going to him.

He did have two bunnies that didn't hit. That would have been SJ best defense for him.

It’s basic statistics. They shoot 34% from 3 on the year, 9th in the conference. Chances are, they would regress towards their average. And if not, I’d rather us get beat by a statistical anomaly than by shooting ourself in the foot.

Even if you're gonna sit Sanogo... Why not put in Akok? We had no rim protection. Their guards drive into the post all second half and Polley/Whaley could not stop it.

We needed a bigger rim presence in the game on defense. Simply inexcusable.

Id rather we dare them to take a 25 foot jump shot as they tire & where odds are they regress to their season average than let them walk into the paint for open layups.

This was compounded by the fact we didn’t have a single person on the court who could put the ball in the basket, because he was sitting on the bench.

Sanogo had been allowed to play through several mistakes in the first half, and was in the midst of his breakout game in the second half. He was very comfortable having the ball on offense, even if still not perfect around the basket.

St. John's went 4-4 on 3s during this stretch.

UConn went 9-15 on FTs during this stretch.
St. John's went 11-14 on FTs during this stretch.

That's the whole difference in the stretch. St. John's shot incredibly well.

We were controlling the game before he went out not them. And b the way Gaffney and Polley played lots of minutes 2nd half, guarded no one and didn't score so how could Sanogo hurt. Awful coaching decision having this guy on the bench, terrible no other way around it. And the occasional zone is warranted when they are torching your guards and no one is helping.

Is he supposed to be helping off a good shooter? Ask Hurley, but it probably depends on the opposing player. I would not want him helping off Earlington, Williams, or Posh that game (although he was not guarding Posh much).

St Johns wasn’t playing 5 out in the first 8 minutes. Completely different scenario.

I read this as, “I’m going to let the other team dictate our style of play”. If I’m an opposing coach I’m licking my chops.

We have no consistent perimeter players without Bouk. Our bigs are our strength on both ends of the floor right now. Hurley basically told anyone playing us until Bouk returns just play small and Hurley will purposely keep the strength of our team riding the pine.

This is a potential major problem that needs to be nipped in the bud right now. Hurley needs to man up and tell Sanogo he made a mistake.
