Rothstein: St. John’s/UConn is college basketball’s burgeoning rivalry.

There hasn't been a problem getting our road matchups against St John's at the Garden. I'll wager heavily that it's been far more than thirty years since we played a game at Carnesecca. We don't need anything from them.

They had momentum when Louie retired. Look around the landscape in our conference and every other conference. Finding a quality replacement is not easy. I can list a ton of schools (starting with St John's) that failed miserably, more than once.

It is a far safer assumption to believe that whoever follows Pitino will drop the performance level slightly to considerably than to believe that once Rick hangs it up they'll continue at the same level.

Case in point 1 is Louisville once he was gone. You can look further in his past as a college coach and find a lot of the same.
Did NIL exist back then? Did Mike Repole matter then? I think you’re missing a key variable. They’ll be able to attract a top coach if that coach knows he can buy a great roster. I agree anything behind Pitino will be a drop, but StJ will also be well positioned to attract a good coach. In that same time frame Hurley could be off to the NBA. Nothing in the future is guaranteed.

The bolded part is the first correct thing that you've written in a while.

Indiana has had resources and history that few could match and they have done little in terms of finding a replacement for Bobby Knight.

It took Kentucky doing something that a few years earlier they publicly stated they would never do (hire Calipari) to get the program back to high a level after the program fell off a cliff under Tubby Smith.

Yes, there are a different set if rules nie and because of Repole St John's can compete with the top few schools in what they can offer re recruits, but there have always been a number of schools that could offer as much as anyone that for any of a number of reasons still always fell short.

I'll believe that St John's will succeed in replacing Pitino when I see it.

lol - ok dude. Go to bed. Doofus’ like you is what makes this board a pile of tribal nonsense. Have you actually ever played a sport?

Please stop comparing today to 30 years ago - you’ll gain cred when you start there. Evolve brother. The world is changing. If you can’t have a healthy discussion and disagree without insulting someone then you’re just ignorant.

LOL.

Yeah, I'm the problem

Historically it has been beyond rare forc a school to successfully replace a head coach that has taken their program to higher levels than they had seen for a very long time (if ever) once that coach leaves (regardless of the reason he left) yet you believe St John's will be able to do this easily because, oh it is now a new time.

I get it, you want to believe with all of your heart that St John's is a rivalry and that for the next twenty five to thirty years these games will matter at a level beyond current season conference standings. You cannot will that into existence.

I love how you claim that I am the one throwing insults but as you've displayed countless times on many threads the past six months, you are still so young that you believe you know everything.

Was Louisville our rival back in the good old days?
Not really. When KO was coach they pretty much kicked our a$$es. Pitino full court pressure and Peyton Siva driving right down the lane. Very bad memories.

that was just one year - what about 2005 through 2012 with Calhoun/Pitino?

.-.
This is a short term thing. Unless you believe a school that couldn’t get anyone to take the job a few years ago is going to replace a hall of famer with another guy who is equal. If you think that, I suggest you look at the experiences of Villanova, Syracuse, North Carolina, UConn. All had way more going for them than St John’s and none had long term success with their replacements for legendary coaches. There is a reason why Calhoun, Boeheim, Williams, and Wright are in the hall of fame.

I know Connecticut fans get all gooshy about Madison Square Garden, for reasons I don’t understand even after living here for 50 years, but that isn’t the case in the rest of the world. MSG isn’t getting a coach.

Pretty sure Pitino got the better of JC when he was at BU and PC as well.

Yep... When you Google it, AI said Pitino was 9-0 vs JC when RP was at BU and PC. The #'s don't completely add up, so I don't know if that's accurate.

RP is a giant tool. But he's easily one of the best coaches ever. I love that he's made St. John's into a thing, I love that they are right down the road, and I love that at least for a few years we can have, hopefully, some epic top 10 BE basketball matchups again.

They purchased a good roster. In their top 10 players how many are bought vs recruited as freshman (yes I know they get NIL) compared to us?

In a kind of a strange way I agree that Rick will be the malevolent arch villain that will tempt everyone who has high blood pressure. And I hope it goes on with Dan Hurley and RP for years. My favorite villain as a coach was John Thompson. He was an intimidator that seemed to always get the better of the refereeing for his team or so it seemed to me. Georgetown and RP teams were never an easy game but when you beat them it is so much more satisfying. Boeheim was just a whiner who always looked like he just sucked a lemon. But RP and JT; they could make your blood boil.

Do you really care come March whether the team is largely portal guys or recruits? I sure don’t
He is something I never thought I'd say, I'm 100% with you scoot. It doesn't matter how you put your team together. Just win, baby.

Well yes and here’s why. It feels more right.
Doing it with say 1/2 the players developed from scratch in your own program the way UConn is doing rather than all hired guns just feels better.
Maybe someday our entire team is done that way but honestly I hope not. And I think a poll of our fans would reflect that.

I agree but you can't live in the past. I remember when UConn won the soccer title and woofed that they were "America's Team", no International players! So what? It didn't matter then and it doesn't matter now. They won is what mattered. Back when Dom had us in the gutter while BCU was going to the dance with all Connecticut players we were told "those guys couldn't get into UConn" like it was a point of pride. It wasn't, it was a point of embarrassment. Now BCU loses all the time saying they can't get players in. You wanna trade with them because of the feelz? For your team to win, they need to play by the current rules. If some fans can't get behind that, it's on them.

I didn’t say it wouldn’t happen. Hurley is going to get the best talent he can latch his hands onto. There are superstar kids coming up every year like Mullins who can contribute right away and Hurley will go get them, and that is great. If we can get some of them every year and then the best portal transfers isn’t that good?
Pitino has to completely indoctrinate his entire roster. Sounds like a pain in the ass because honestly Reed and Stew, Alex and Ross have a head start on how our offense and defense works which will help the new guys integrate.
