RJ Evans looking to transfer to UConn?

I think he would be a good fit...he was very aggressive taking it to the hoop and dunking it against us...we that kind of aggression...plus gives us some size to our back court and only using a scholli for 1 year and get us through the post season band(if it happens)

I agree that this could be a good fit. Much rather take him than a flyer on a less than stellar recruit.

I remember watching R.J. Play for NFA in high school so that would be cool to see him in a husky uniform.

Kid is a player. Hope he winds up at UCONN. We will need another quality guard.

Can someone describe his game? 2 or 1? Can he defend physical 2s? Hit 3 consistently or slasher? Thanks

.-.
Exactly what we need ... STRONG perimeter defender...The guys we have now are two big (long) and slow to handle smaller (quicker) guards... We need the backcourt depth in the worst way anwyays...

Shot 18% from 3 last year also.

Actually, the best comparison might be a poor man's, 6'3'' Royce White. Husky, strong, likes to go to the basket, can't shoot, etc.

We got enough guys on the team to jack up 3's....we need that big physical guard to make something happen when every one else is standing and watching....at least bye doing that it will make the defense move

This would be great. Granted we need a SF more, and could also use another big man, but bringing in an experienced player who can play would be great. Im sure he could help us out in the much lacking leadership department. Love this news.

.-.
He could be a spark off the bench. Physical and gets a lot of steals. Good slasher - but his real height is only 6'2". Good handle going right. Not very good going left. As mentioned above, he is a horrible outside shooter. Range of maybe 8' on a good day.

For his career, he has hit an incredible 26-138 on threes (18%). Only hit 3-24 this past year. Also hits only about 55% from the line - which is not good when your whole game consists of attacking the rim.

Sounds like a defensive specialist at best, who would only see the floor in the event of foul trouble for Boat or Bazz. Maybe a Donnell Beverly type? That kind of guy isn't bad to have on this team, necessarily, especially when Calhoun has way over-recruited the 6'6-6'8 wing type and has a dearth of true college guards.

I wish this year's team had a DBev type on it. At least he was able to slow things down and defend some of the more physical guards we were matched up.

I'll take 6'2" over another 5'10" guy...who else is out there who would commit to our program pending a decision about the post season band?..a good student who will only be here for 1 year...what's not to like

That's the other plus. He'd be doing this to get a graduate degree, so we'd be pretty much assured of no APR issues for him.

UConn should wait until after the decision from the NCAA before pulling the trigger on a guard that cannot shoot. It just sounds like a scholarship could get tied up with a one dimensional player who might well see little time on the court. Maybe I have the wrong impression of a defensive specialist, maybe he's a slasher who can score the ball or a combo who could play some point effectively. Next year's team is going to need to replace points from departing players and I would think that we would need points coming from the 2G spot.

Exactly, i dont think they should waste a scholarship on a player that could be getting Darius Smith type minutes

Darius smith is also a big reason for our apr issues...plus if we wait till July do u think any body is going to be available?..unless we go to Germany and get some one out of nowhere

This kid is not a bad player at all. He's not Jeremy Lamb, but he's not Darius Smith either.

You all know Calhoun likes to have a full roster and use each available scholarship. Taking Evans for one year is 1,000 times better than taking a flyer on an under the radar recruit who could easily transfer after a year or two and hurt our APR.

I agree, it's a one year commitment to a kid who had 15 against UConn, 13 against Harvard, 21 against Providence this past year (not great shooting numbers, but not horrid).

He may only be the third/fourth guard, but it's better than having a Trice/Smith/etc. who will also only be around for a year and could hurt the APR.

If UConn can get one of it's higher targets, fine but if it's a toss up between RJ and someone else who is a four year player, go with RJ and try to find a higher four year kid for 2013. That would also break up the guards a bit with Napier as a senior, Boat a junior, Calhoun a sophomore and player X as a freshman in 2013-2014.

At this point UConn has zero scholarships available, minus 1 if Drummond stays and wants a scholarship. Need to see who goes pro, if anyone transfers and if the NCAA gives any of the APR scholarships back.

Of course if no one transfers outside AO, no one goes pro UConn is both NCAA eligible and the NCAA gives UConn both APR scholarships back, UConn would only have one spot available (assuming Drummond gets the other one). Of course if that is the case, I am even more for bringing in RJ. He would then be the 4th/5th guard with Lamb/Napier/Boat/Calhoun. If the gods (Emmert/NCAA's) saw for this to happen, I would love UConn's chances next year.

Sigh, I can dream (listed by position not necessarily by who starts):

PG Napier/Boat
SG Lamb/Calhoun/RJ
SF Giffey/Daniels
PF Roscoe/Olander/Bradley
C Drummond/Wolf

PG JR, So
SG JR, Freshman, 5th year
SF JR, So
PF JR, JR, JR
C So, JR

Complete pipe dream but I'll be dreaming for now until the harsh reality becomes reality.

Sounds like a poor mans Taliek Brown? I know he scored about 15 against us.

.-.
Gimme RJ... He's mature and will play D... We have enough scorers... I'm sure he'll know what to do with the ball in his hands on offense.. You'd expect a guy like this to occassionally take an open mid range shot.. and do it with confidence....

I don't see how a single person could be opposed to this move. We will have 3 guards on the team next year and two of them are 5'10. The other is a freshman. There are no longer any highly rated guard prospects which we are after, so now we have a situation where the team has no depth whatsoever at the guard spot, and no one but flyers to take a shot on. Instead of taking a flyer on a 4 year player, Evans is a 6'2 - 6'3 , strong 2 guard who will be a 1 year commitment, who is a local kid no less.
