Let me put it this way: Greeks are so averse to lettuce in their salads that the only one that has lettuce in it is called a.... lettuce salad. It's basically lettuce, dill and scallions. That's it.Perhaps he's referring to the fact that, arguably, every salad in Greece is a Greek salad.

FacepalmI have seen "Greek Salad" on many menus in Greece, both in Athens and in the islands. And I have ordered and eaten them. Darn good too. There are many salads in Greece. Good grief.
Here's a restaurant in the Plaka featuring a "Greek Traditional Salad." Note they also serve a Caesar. There are many places that don't use the word "Traditional." But this took a couple of minutes to find. And at this point it's -peace out.

Tourist: Waiter, I’d like to order a Greek salad.
Waiter: Sorry sir we do not have a Greek salad.
Tourist: Are you saying that a Greek restaurant in Greece does not make a Greek salad? Greek restaurants in the states all serve Greek salads. I came to Greece expecting Greek salads at your restaurants.
Waiter: I apologize sir. But this information is Greek to me!
