That didn't take long... she just went into hospice on Monday.

Amazing talent. Might be best we'll ever see at what she did.

Queen of Soul and King of Rock both died on August 16th

I've never heard Robert Johnson called "King of Rock", but I'll go along with that given rock doesn't exist without the blues.

I was referring to Elvis dying on August 16th, 1977

Unfortunately, we're at a point in time where we will be regularly saying goodbye to the musical titans of the 60s and 70s. 20 years from now, most of them will be gone.

A moment I forgot...

Emmys director: "Hey Aretha, got a moment?"
Aretha: "Sure, what's up?"
Emmys director: "Luciano Pavarotti just got sick and can't go on tonight."
Aretha: "Sorry to hear that..."
Emmys director: "You think you could go on and take his place?"
Aretha: "OK. What do you think I should sing, 'Respect' or 'Natural Woman'?"
Emmys director: "Um, neither. It's Luciano's spot so it'll be the operatic 'Nessun Dorma'."
Aretha: "Whatever."

This should be an interesting thesis... please go ahead and elaborate!
It's not simple enough?
You're assuming that rock and roll would not have developed on its own.
Sure, rock progressions were based on blues progressions and everybody in early rock was influenced by blues artists. But if blues never existed you don't know where music would have gone. Do you?

I believe you just answered your question via the bolded part above. Music would have gone somewhere else that wasn't rock n roll as we know it.

Maybe without the competition, Texas Swing would've taken over.
