Rickea's Mom needs an intervention here. Someone must help her come to the realization that none of this is helping her daughter who has to find a new home in college basketball.
It's a hard time to be a parent with a child in the spotlight. When the internet provides anyone a chance to criticize your daughter to the public and question their character, I don't fault her from being upset. I agree that this isn't doing Rickea any favors, but I understand why she feels compelled to defend her daughter.

I don’t understand your thinking with regards to Rickea Jackson as it relates to “second chance” because this young lady has never been in trouble to the best of my knowledge. T’ ea Cooper punched a teammate in the face and was asked to leave Tn.
While still very different from Cooper’s situation, Jackson was reportedly involved in a physical altercation whith Anastasia Hayes during halftime of the Ole Miss game and after the Arkansas game was “encouraged to pursue transfer opportunities.”

Trouble seems to follow the Hayes family though, so there are surely two sides to every story.

I understand and support the compulsion to defend her daughter because I would do the same.
Criticism of her daughter on social media is harmless, potentially endless and easily avoided. My advise for her would fall along these lines:

Never wrestle with a pig. You Both get dirty and the pig likes It!

Attributed to both George Bernard Shaw & Mark Twain.

The problem is...she's defending her daughter against the indefensible...criticism. Even if the criticism is unwarranted, there's no gain in responding. She could hurt her daughter. Unplug the computer. People need a target...so, don't be there. They'll move on to the next target.

Interesting that the 4 SEC wins that State has garnered this season were without Jackson on the floor.

Novak and his staff along with the players that he has (8 in total) have done a credible job of playing through all the distractions.

I very much wish Rickea Jackson all the best in the future wherever she lands.

IMO, even going back to her freshman year, something just did not click well with her and her teammates on the floor. I don’t know if it was chemistry, personalities clashing or what but something was amiss and never seemed to resolve itself. I very much understand that having three coaches in a span of eighteen months is tough but the other players that are still on the roster have seemingly been mature enough to rise above the distractions and they are playing hard and still winning some basketball games.

 Jessika Carter?

I emphasize with mama Jackson, I have intervened in my son (baseball) and daughter (gymnastics) sports activities when I felt they were not being treated fairly. In every case, I did more harm than good, so advice to caring parents, sometimes you need to let you child decide what is best for their future.

She is on the roster, yes, but she has not played all year. So in essence, in this circumstance, I am not counting her.

I have no idea why she is not playing but I did hear Coach Novak say that she plans to play next year.

I was referring to the actual 8 players who are actually playing minutes in games.

If she is on the roster but does not play does this year count for future eligibility?

If she doesn't play I'm pretty sure wont count as a year of eligibility used up.

I don't think it's fair to say that this has anything to do with "maturity." Everyone has different thresholds and if she made the decision to better her life (physically, emotionally, or mentally), that's a pretty mature thing which, quite frankly, a lot of grown adults don't even do.

2018 UCONN wasn't better than the 2017 squad (debatable, but I thought 2017 had better chemistry all year) despite returning everyone but Chong and adding in Stevens.

This isn't the thread topic so I don't want to get overly extended into it, but that 2018 UConn team was, statistically, one of the best NCAA teams ever going by offensive and defensive efficiency. They just ran into a team they didn't match up very well against and that made a ton of plays.

Statistically they were eerily almost identical across the board aside from 2018 having an edge in rebounds/rebound margin, and 2017 having better assist numbers.

By mid season form, 2017 had such dynamite chemistry and I thought everyone knew their role well and flourished in it. In 2018 the team was still great but I didn't think they had quite the same "magic" or consistent on court chemistry than the 2017 squad did. Collier played better in 2017 and 2019 without Stevens, Williams was slightly less impactful in 2018, and Nurse's productivity started out high but tailed off as the season went on. A lot of this argument is subjective so I understand if people don't see eye to eye, but at any rate, going back to the original premise I still think it's an example of how adding a top level talented player to an already fully loaded roster doesn't always make a team better.

What quality would you call it? I am not faulting her first wanting to better herself. But why are the 8 players that are persevering through a very difficult situation doing so and then you have one player who decided to quit during the middle of the season?

Once again, chemistry.

Throwing shade like that at a school as a parent is just wrong. But it has to be coming from Rickea back to her mom.

As my grandparents and parents always said. If you can't say something nice, just don't say anything.

How about... Everyone is making the decision that's best for them. There doesn't need to be a quality attributed to it.

Even if we did choose the word 'mature', you can have two people in similar situations make different decisions and based on their circumstances, both could be considered mature. It's not a binary concept.

That is commonly know as a healthy redshirt. Jeff Waltz did it for a pair of Louisville players Nyah Green & Ramani Parker in 2019. Green is now at Duke and is ironically listed as an academic junior and is only now using here 1st year of eligibility.

I just saw a video fprom MSST fan titled “DARK CLOUD GONE” that I feel prompted Mama Jackson post. I think it would be difficult for any parent not to respond to that video and support their child. My take: MSST fan posting negatives about transferring players can only hurt MSST, show you support for the MSST team by being there for our players and just quit throwing shade.

As I mentioned I hope the very best for her.

I grew up under the concept that if you were on a team that you finished out the season before moving on. Saying I am entering the transfer portal in the middle of the season is a nice way to say “I quit “

Same with football players who “opt out of bowl games.” Just be honest and say “I quit.”

If that is the definition of mature then so be it. I will gladly stand corrected.

All that said, I hope she does great else where and has a great WNBA career.

OPT infers they have a choice...so, I wouldn't call that quitting. As far as the timing of her departure, I don't necessarily think it's a reflection of maturity. I don't know her like that. But, I will say that only Rickea can make the call on when was a good time to leave. I look at it as a strained marriage/relationship...some will say the parties should stick it out, but, only the actual people involved know when they have had enough and it's best to move on.

Some coaches will put up with a parent like this, as long as they get to March. See Texas A&M and Ohio State

Based on twitter posts, I dont think Jackson's mom seems difficult, she just appears to be defending her daughter from online attacks. She hasn't trashed anyone or made any inflammatory statements.

She called MSU a dark place. Pretty inflammatory.

I'm pretty sure she was implying that her daughter was in a dark place mentally in that situation, hence why she left the team midseason. Rickea herself said that she still had love for the school so I doubt she was dissing the school.

Here's the way I see it, she endured 3 head coaches in 3 years and 2 of those changes occurred suddenly and unexpectedly. The roster of the team she joined looks completely different in year 3 with all the transfers. She has been considered the star of the team and sometimes other players get jealous, especially when you add a lot of new pieces to a team and the jealously might not result into a happy team.

I'll never fault a player for leaving if they're not in a good place mentally. We saw what happened with Jessika Carter off the court and it's in everyone best interests that she prevents herself from being in a similar situation.

Maybe I'm sensitive to this issue because right now South Carolina is mourning the death of a former collegiate track athlete/Miss USA winner/attorney/ TV correspondent in Chelsie Kryst who appeared to be on top of the world but took her own life this week. I think it's important that we don't take it lightly when people say that a certain environment isn't good for them mentally because you don't know where it may lead.
