Rick Pitino: UConn's only weakness is they foul too much

I blame slick rick for louisville taking our place in the other conference. that single day has caused so much continued consternation

how can he say they're not as aggressive defensively. I know he knows a little bit more about hoops than I do but this doesn't jibe

This was the McDermott school of defense with Kalk. I feel like they never fouled.

A lot of the top teams up on the front end, then us way in the back with Houston, Nebraska and Purdue.

Creighton just plays position defense. Don't challenge everything. Just keep people away from the basket, and try to get them to take pullups. You need the right kind of players to do that, and they don't have that team this year, but it is a reasonable strategy. Got them within a basket of the Final Four a few years ago.

As in a 7’ 2” shot blocker deluxe? Those aren’t in ample supply and he had nothing like it this year. A cheat code as they call it. I’m

The way to beat StJohns is to make them a jump shooting team. They get their points inside the paint and at the foul line.
How do we do that outside of playing a zone? We don’t have the horses to keep them out of the paint. They need to hope they don’t get matched up with some of the bigger teams out there this year. Would love to see SrJ play a Purdue.

In the St John's game fouls three and four on Reed were not fouls. Pitino is trying to ensure that the refs continue calling them even if they aren't there.
That's why I never really joined in the chorus here at the BoneYard when everyone was saying Zuby destroyed Tarris. Most of his damage was done after those bogus 3rd and 4th fouls calls on Tarris where he was scared he would get called for the 5th foul if he breathed in Zuby's direction. Those 4rd and 4th fouls calls were as legitimate as Okafor's 1st and 2nd foul calls in the Final Four game against Duke.

I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t hate the guy like most do.
I don't hate him either. And we all know he is an elite level HOF coach. But it does surprise me that St. John's doesn't get called for more fouls considering they play a pressure defensive style whose purpose is to force turnovers.
Having said all of that I am glad he is back in the Big East. He, Hurley, and UConn add legitimacy and national respect for the Big East after Villanova falling off for the last 3 years, although Kevin Willard is doing well.

I wouldn’t be against playing some Zone but I know Hurley would never.
But you could play not as tight on D to take away their Dribble penetration.
First game STJ blew by our defenders.

Hurley needs to respond “St. John’s fouls a lot under Pitino, just wish they were called”.
I just wonder how much the refs really like Hurley. Having been married a long time, it's no fun when the wife starts yapping every 5 minutes watching a movie and you can't stop it.

In spite of their relationship Hurley still is successful. It's a credit to him.

I feel like the fouling has gotten better. Not great, but better. The real issue is turnovers, missed free throws, and too many generally botched possessions.

We also occasionally can't stay in front of ball handlers and can be dominated by elite athletes.

My biggest concern come tourney time is some lottery pick clearing it out on AK every time down the floor.

St. John’s was in our shorts with a full court press for 40 minutes and our problem is a reach in every now and then? Right.
And yes I despise Pitino and his fanbase. I hope they lose every game they play from here out.
I’ve said this before, Yankee and Red Sox fans do not root for each other because they are in the same league or division. They root against their rivals. Always.
The BE is a bad league and they ain’t saving it, but neither will we, plus in this era of buying players does that really matter?
Yes it matters. You buy players with money and quality and popularity of your league effects how much money you have to buy players
