It's no surprise that the NCAA is taking an inordinate amount of time to complete this so-called investigation (ahem, whitewash), considering how long they took to rule on the Corey Maggette case. There were still articles being written about the Maggette case FIVE years afterward when we played the dooksters in the 2004 FF. IIRC, they didn't announce the result, which was a total whitewash, until 2005. You can bet that if the NCAA is taking this long looking into any of its sacred cow blue blood programs, the result will be no punishment, nothing.

Oh yeah, Coach K had absolutely no idea that Maggette had gotten paid to play for Myron Piggie's AAU team. That little weasel knows everything that goes on, down to the minutest detail. They should have had their entire '98-'99 season vacated, including a return of all their tournament money. We even held out our former player whose name shan't be mentioned for a couple of games so the NCAA could determine if Piggie had paid him to play.

The NCAA recently made Notre Dame football vacate all wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons because a player's girlfriend helped several players cheat in classes (making those players ineligible). ND self-reported and decided to play nice with the NCAA during the investigation, and hand over all sorts of material, etc., (which they probably regret doing now).

The beans were only spilled on the UNC scandal because NC State message boards called attention to it and a former employee talked to a reporter about it. Since the investigation was opened UNC has basically stonewalled and will probably be rewarded for it. Does anybody seriously think that they would make UNC vacate their 2005 title (even though a bunch of players on the 2005 team were in the fake classes)? Does anybody think they will make UNC basketball and football vacate wins going back to 1993?

In some ways the severity of the offense helps UNC because they know they won't get absolutely murdered no matter what happens.

No worries folks. The NCAA is using the same investigative team they've used for Miami in the UNC and Louisville investigations.

If they used the one they used for Miami, maybe UNC would have to worry. That crew was working to make a lot of stuff up, they just screwed up and got caught doing it. Then again, maybe that would be good for UNC after all.

Watching UConn-ECU last night, there were a lot of commercials for THE REMATCH between UNC and Duke. I don't think it's being cynical to say that the hype for those 2 games (and potential 3rd in the conference tournament) every year plays a role in why the NCAA has dragged their feet with this situation. It's part of their blueblood status, but taking down UNC basketball removes the attraction of 2 of the marquee games from the CBB schedule for 2 or 3 seasons (depending on how long it takes UNC to bounce back.)

What I don't get is that the NCAA hammered Kentucky in the late 80s and that didn't damage them long term. Not to imply that their sanctions were a positive, but the revival of Kentucky basketball under Pitino was a big story. There's no guarantee that UNC would return to form as quickly as Kentucky, but it can be done. If things have gotten to the point where the NCAA is afraid of upsetting on the name brand schools, then they really don't serve much of a purpose.

I really think a case like the Miami investigation has impacted the NCAA in this regard. For years people alleged that the NCAA acted unethically, manufactured evidence, etc and in that case they were caught in a very public way. You have to believe that the threat of legal action, etc is affecting the way the NCAA goes about things now.

The potential for sanctions is like the sword of domacles hanging over the program. No doubt the investigation already impacted that program significantly

Not correct. They employed a lawyer in the Shapiro bankruptcy case to interview witnesses in that case. It was a gray area and an over reach by the NCAA. A tactical mistake but not, as you imply, a creation of false information.

This article in USA Today gives some info about it. But more revealing is why that SOB Emmert went after UConn regarding the APR.

Theyre still fixing code violations at Uconn. There must be 5-6 projects a year that come across my desk a year. Not huge projects but $100k here and $200k there adds up. Cant say how many were incorrectly done under Emmert's watch but im sure there's more than a few. He can ES&D.

You're right, the evidence was manufactured by Shapiro on top of the actual stuff that could be proven. So they didn't manufacture evidence, but they went way out of bounds to try and get some and got caught because the crooked lawyer sent them a bill. It still was a very public exposure of the NCAA's "unfortunate" investigative techniques and I think it has contributed to their lack of aggressiveness since.
