Reibe in the portal

Bummer but I’m not sure what he expected when Tarris was playing like Superman down the stretch and Riebe’s best attribute was that he had 5 usable fouls. Wish him well but the opportunity was sitting there if he put in the work over the summer. Unfortunately patience is almost nonexistent with kids these days.

Kids are often under a ton of pressure.

I am sure someone somewhere sees dollar signs - and not in a malevolent way - and they get worried that their son might not be in the best place to get to where they want him to be. They'd like him to have a 15 year NBA career and be set for life. So they have him transfer somewhere else.

It's not right, it's not wrong. We're fans, but it's their lives. We really can't judge them.

I wish he stayed, I think it would have been good for him to stay, but I have no skin in their game.

College basketball is no longer what it was. We bring in players for one year for a fixed amount of money, and then they become free agents to go wherever they want and their former school can offer them more or less. If a player worth $750k leaves, you’ve saved that money and now spent it on a replacement.

My point (beyond that he contributed to an outstanding season this year) is we paid him an amount for this year that we agreed upon and if he came back next year he’d get what the market thinks is the right price for him next year. If we don’t retain him we get someone else. That’s the new reality.
Yep. Not a fan of it.

Dauster is saying Mullins will go for 4mm. That would be a crazy number, especially if he's going in the 20s/2mm a year.
His value in a veteran negotiated NBA rookie contract under union guidelines and in the NCAA free market are unrelated.

The fact that the math in Mullins decision to return would look quite different under current rules vs the time when he was a student-athlete receiving a scholarship seems like good thing to me (it isn't my money).

.-.
This was very much the impression I got. Very often it seemed like he just wanted to foul quickly so he could go sit back down...it took effort to foul that much.

Sucks because when he was engaged he was solid and looked very much like he'd eventually be a heckuva player for us. O well, best of luck, let's go find another
In hindsight I see what people mean. In the moment I didn’t notice because I was so focused on Tarris Reed lol

Dauster's view - not about money, more about system fit.

Did they not know that when they recruited him?

$4 million over two years.

Agent fee is capped at 4% so they'd get $160k
$10k in union dues.
Probably ~$1.2 million in federal taxes
Depending on what state - $200,000 in state taxes.
Probably buy $1 million home and then pay $30k/yr in property taxes
$10,000/yr in landscaping and upkeep for the house.
At least one new car $100,000, $5k in insurance
$50k in presents for his family. Double this if he has a girlfriend.
$20,000 a year for an accountant/business manager who, along with the financial manager, will very likely steal most of the rest of his money.

Yada yada yada, he's broke in two years. Might as well just come back. J/k

For the people stating UConn pushed him out- I think that’s wrong- I believe Reibe was intending to transfer for about two months now- this is a loss- with his size & skill that’s hard to duplicate- obviously he needed to get stronger in the post- but you would think that will come in time- for the team that’s get him I believe they should be thrilled. You cannot force a kid to like a coach/program.
It's hard to criticize a freshman for mistakes, but when the coach mentions issues with the family on more than one occasion, and the player seems to be disinterested the last half of the season, all that comes to mind is he no longer wanted to be here, nor did he fit here, so this was not totally unexpected.

In fact, with us showing interest in Hines and McKeever, maybe it wasn't his decision.

The next question is do we have the money necessary to bring in four or five quality portal guys?

Yeah, I don't think I agree with the style of play reasoning. Why would he commit to UConn in the first place when he knew Hurley likes his centers to be bruisers and dominate inside offensively and defensively?

I don't think he wanted to entertain the possibility of getting 15 mins/game next season off the bench. I think he simply wants to start already next season and he will go to any power conference team that guarantees him that opportunity, which is fair.

With no guardrails, it will rapidly become who can afford the 20-30m a year to field a title worthy team vs who can’t. Retaining players costs just as much as bringing in top portal players.
The worse structured professional sports are run massively better that CBB. This is a total S show, unregulated nightmare. If nothing changes it’s going to be the same 6-7 schools every year that have any chance to win a title.

I don't understand how the Supreme Court has said that professional sports are a game and they can be regulated and run like a game. But college sports should be a free-for-all.

Every year more of this, behaviors change for the worse. Hurley could run the best system, be the most beloved, and a kid will still be obligated to go into the portal, because that’s what everyone else is doing.

At some point soon you might as well let every kid go into the portal and see if they can do better and see them as annual free agents you have to bid on to get back. This is all beyond lame.

Multi year contract is about the only answer. I've always felt as though, if a school commits to a kid and a kid commits to a school the kid should be guaranteed a four year education/degree, even if he doesn't work out. I don't even know how they're gonna calculate graduation rate from now on.

I wonder if he might be thinking his ex-teammate Hannes Steinbach was better utilized? Steinbach is headed to the NBA maybe he's looking to be his replacement? Pure speculation on my part

Right, and every year the costs will go up. Next year could be 30-40m for the top teams. We are already probably close to getting priced out.

He's entered the portal. Does this mean he's really leaving, or is there a chance he doesn't get the deal he's hoping for?

Based on his size, program he is coming from and age (one year) he will have a line of suitors. We don’t have to like it but he likely knows his destination based on tampering so unfortunately he has played his last game IMO

I think reibe is already a solid offensive asset, but his D is weak and he can’t stay on the floor due to fouling. I would have liked to see him next year after an offseason in the weight room. If he could avoid the foul a minute production and stay on the floor we might have seen him at the 4 a bit. Not sure he is athletic enough to play there though. I’m guessing the transfer is mutual, since Danny does not like the parents constant texting, if true. Not every recruit is a good fit.

you mentioned guys who came in as transfers. Hurley/staff and those players knew it was a 1 year deal.

The amount of resources, time and effort they made to get Reibe to commit hoping he's a cornerstone player for the program for him to bolt is insane. So yeah it was a waste of the staffs time and Reibe's if he was going to leave for a lesser program. Same for Nowell, Abraham, Diggins. Might as well just start at the school where you can play like VCU or Gtown if your going to leave after a year.

High school recruiting should be dead for us. It's a thing for mid and low majors. Or lower P4s. If a kid isn't a top-20 instant controbitor there's very little point.

Perhaps an honest conversation was had during which Reibe was told he was not guaranteed the starting role in 2026-2027 and he just wasn't willing to be slotted in a backup role again. I really thought he was coming along nicely even though he wasn't consistent. Eric definitely helped win some games and was a key contributor. I wish him well.
Agreed. Because he came in so raw, Eric needs PT to optimize himself before graduating and if he was told that he'd split minutes again then you can't blame him for wanting out. Because we're competing for Final Fours, the program can't wait for another season or two to for him to reach that level of play. Both can be right at the same time.

Agree in principle. I'd tweak it to top-40. But, yeah with basketball (as opposed to football where you have to roster so many players) all you need is 7 or 8 really good players to win a championship. Makes sense to be portal-heavy (4 or 5 contributors) and augment with high schoolers (3 contributors). I think that's why our current high school class is only 2 guys (maybe we pick up a late blue chipper like a McNeeley situation).

That's because all of the other major sports have an anti-trust exemption*

The dam broke in 2021 when SCOTUS ruled that the NCAA was violating anti-trust laws in NCAA v. Alston.

The only people who can stop this is Congress and they would have to grant a similar anti-trust exemption, but in order to do that they would need to classify these athletes as employees formally. And universities don't want that either. So here we are!

*MLB's exemption is through a 1922 SCOTUS decision that if actually challenged on its merits will get overturned because it was ruled that MLB is not interstate commerce because games are played at a fixed location. It's why the MLBPA doesn't need to agree to a salary cap because they could blow up the shaky exemption at any time.

He needs to develop, both physically and in terms of his game. Playing time alone won't be the answer. But hopefully he can find a level where more playing times available, the coach and the level of competition is that the right level for his development, and he gets paid whatever his value is. Of course, even if all of those things happen, it won't stop him from fouling out.

Professional leagues have collective bargaining agreements with the athletes. Colleges do not have this and have done everything possible to try and stop athletes from becoming employees when in reality top level college football and basketball is an employee/employer relationship.
