Hines averaged 6ppg on a bad seton hall team. I know he can block shots, but it doesn’t seem like he has much of an offensive game. I don’t get why he’s our top C target

In a perverse way, I take this as a sign that we’re getting Hines and the staff was honest to Reibe about his role next year (timeshare, at best).

He may have wanted more minutes at the end of this season, but he certainly didn’t earn them with his play.

This was a tough one because I’m sure he wants a full-time starting role guarantee, but too risky to promise him that and not bring in any competition based on his performance.

Yeah…. I think this is true.
But, I don’t think the staff sold him a bill of goods. We have had a process here with a sort of apprenticeship approach. Sanogo, Clingan, Sampson, Reed, and then Reibe. Next year would have probably been a dual role and then he would be the next big.

I do think he might feel like had he gotten more minutes, he would have maybe excelled. But, is what it is.
Being a UConn Husky is demanding and the expectations are high. Might not be for everyone. Maybe he goes to BC.

Oh well. Onward and upward!

Waste of everyone's time? He played in every single game this year for a team that went to the national championship game and started a few while Reed was out. He served his purpose this year. If he was a one year back up -- well, so were Lansah Kromah and Joey California.

Eh, I get what he’s saying.

He was somewhat useful this season but a McD AA Center usually isn’t giving you his best output frosh year. We recruited him to be our center going forward, not to give us 5-8 minutes of foul time.

We recruit and help develop and then they leave unless they’re super studs, so I get being frustrated and thinking only recruiting 5* impact starters makes sense.

Guys his size should be shot-blocking rebound machines. Not floating around the three point line. College game is again changing with dominant big men as in the final four. Talented for his size but we need someone who is dominant. We don't need guards who are going to lead us in rebounds.

FWIW, the Athletic has ranked Reibe as the 46th best player in the portal; Hines is ranked 23rd, Diop 28th.

While I still find it difficult to believe that four years has passed since the near nuclear meltdown of this site once we lost Floyd, Gaffney & Diggins, hopefully those here are aware enough to realize our program isn't going to sit on its thumb and say "oh well" when players leave.

Some here may also want to consider the possibility that nearly every departure in the portal era was a mutual decision.

I have a strong suspicion that we will recover from any player leaving the program through the transfer portal.

Disappointed to see this kid leave. Maybe he’ll weigh some offers and realize playing for Hurley as part of a two man system could work? Won’t hold my breath. I’m guessing there is also a money piece that plays in the equation too.

In the championship game he looked like the only kid on the floor who didn't belong there. Very slow, very hesitant, and really looked like that for a while. Everyone develops differently, but lately he hasn't really looked like someone to count on as a "sure thing".

I doubt the staff keeps his seat warm. This to me would feel like a see yeah to loyalist Hurley. Kid had a clear role next year, just played to a NC game. If he can't appreciate that, then I'm sure it's a one way ticket.

Jordan Hawkins literally had the same type of freshman year.

The disbelief you all have in player development is beyond me man. Reibe would’ve been fine.

Hawkins showed a lot more in his Freshman season than Reibe did. Also Hawk had a clear path to starting his Sophomore season, while Reibe doesn’t.

Reibe played well in two games since the calendar turned. Something was up. This should come as a surprise to no one here.

The high hedge was unkind to Reibe and he wasn’t too friendly to it as well. Hurley’s system offensively has been great for physical bigs and rim-running bigs - but not for finesse bigs. Reibe is a finesse big, and I sense that he has been uncomfortable from the beginning trying to mix it up in the paint. It’s just not who he is. The question now is - did the staff miss on the evaluation. Hindsight is 20/20. A stronger focus on Cenac last year perhaps?

He didn't want to compete for minutes (without Reed) so tells us everything .

Better this way. Now Hurley has a clear lane to upgrade that position without recruiting over Reibe. I couldn’t see him starting next year any more than I see Stewart or even Ross.

Outside of OAD-types, Hurley has initially struggled a bit at figuring out what kind of high school prospect he was to recruit for the new offense. They had been working with what they had on hand during the championship runs and then the staff seemed to try to find the "Ideal" players for the new offense. Then Mahaney happened and he decided to go back to trying to recreate what brought the championships (bringing in Silas).

The Reibe recruitment dates back to the "Ideal" player period. I think Reibe did us a favor and Hurley can go back to big post players that excel at the rim offensively and/or defensively.

For sure. I think Reibe was a really good recruit who wanted to go here and knew Reed was getting the bulk of the minutes. That’s an easy sell to a freshman, no matter what the skill set, so long as you are playable

When it comes to being a starter, yeah I think you gotta check some more boxes, and unfortunately Reibe just doesn’t align with what Hurley probably wants from a starting center, especially with how he closed the year and how foul prone he was in the tourney. I’m sure the ideal situation was for UConn to bring in a guy and have a Samson/Reed set up, but it takes two to tango. I don’t blame either side. Five star center who played meaningful minutes on a team that played in the championship, totally get having to do what’s in your best interest.

A lot of us talked about getting stronger, I honestly don't know how much of that you can build as a 5. You're kind of born with it. Everything he did felt soft & finesse.

The recruiting classes lately have not been what they once were. Until we hear about what is going on with Furphy and Mullins, we are now 0-4 in two consecutive classes on HS recruiting keepers for more than one year. The continuity thing might be all for naught, or Hurley goes to more of the sophomore transfer model.

We are definitely moving to a 2 year model - don't expect anyone to be. here for longer than that going forward.

I honestly think it's kind of pointless now for top programs to go after non 5* guys out of high school. The 4* guys usually won't be good enough to play a significant amount of minutes as freshmen, and maybe not even good enough as sophomores, so most of them will transfer out anyway.

I think the formula is to go after 1 or 2 elite high school kids and then hit the portal for guys that have already proven themselves at the college level and can come in to contribute right away.

Offense I agree, defense might have always been a challenge. This was more of a mutual understanding the fit wasn’t the best for either side. He has talent, should be good whereever he lands

Gosh darnnit. I was really high on Reibe. I thought he’d make a big leap in year 2. He clearly has a high ceiling, just needs more minutes, strength, and coaching. He was in line for 20-25 minutes a game next season. Not a fan of him departing

I found him to be a miss of a recruit from the start. Lot's of chatter early around him having a nice jump shot - not sure that is ever priority for any 5, nevermind a Uconn 5. Maybe he wants to go somewhere he can play more of a stretch role.

He had some really nice games early, then tapered off drastically towards the end of the year. Some of the fouling he was doing was borderline lazy, like he didn't care. The kid was averaging a foul a minute at times.

Best of luck - let's hope we land someone really good, it's a vital position. If we now have to go into next year a new big and PG, that is a tough place to start.

I agree with the “it looked like he didn’t care” down the stretch. Might have cost us the 1 seed and the natty.

I'm actually not surprised. His body language seemed different after Reid was getting into top form and Reibe wasnt getting into the rotation as much.

I think it's more system fit. I'm leaning towards of how UConn utilizes their centers from Sanogo to Clingan to Taris and I didn't think Coach Hurley was willing to change that philosophy especially with Luke leaving.

I'd like to know after all said done how many kids who enter the portal just to test the waters end up going back to their original school. He might just be seeing if there's more money in a guarantee or more playing time somewhere else if he's leaving, I'm hoping he's going to BC.

For 2022 through 2024, the NCAA portal research shows an average of roughly 70% transfer rate, 6% return rate and 24% limbo rate they call "Active", meaning still looking, un-enrolled or likely transfered out of Division 1 into a lower level.
