Reibe in the portal

Who is the family? Lol. People keep mentioning that. For me, I'm asking more in the sense that, unless they are NBA or WNBA stars or upper-level EuroLeague, do they really have the audacity? Hurley and staff probably know what they are doing, lol.
What family doesn't think their kid should play more?

Oof. Was hoping he'd bulk up another 20 pounds in the offseason and level up. He showed some promise but regressed during the season getting pushed around during the season.

Not sure why people are bringing up Massamba Diop. He specifically has a do not contact and is already choosing between St. John's and Gonzaga.

If I am Hurley, why even recruit more than 1 HS kid a year? Go all in on an elite 5 star like Castle/McNeeley/Mullins who you know will start freshman year.

These 4star guys who aren't good enough to start early on in the career end up leaving after 1 year because they are looking for an easier path. Waste of everyones time.
This one is a shame. I get that if you don't play them barely at all like a Nowell or Abraham, they're going to want to move on but Reibe played in every single game and got a lot of important minutes. While he would have needed to compete for it, the C position was and is wide open for the taking. This seems like the exact situation where they could have had some continuity by bringing in a 4 star HS recruit.

Maybe his hot start provided unrealistic expectations for his camp or maybe those saying they did like how he was being used are right. Either way, it seems shortsighted for a big man like him to leave this development system after one year. It's not like he was going to get less minutes next year, regardless of who they brought in.

I don’t disagree with you. I wish he would be more patient. He clearly needs another year at the backup. Me, I’d take 15 minutes a game with Hurley rather than move. But I’m 65 years old and only 6 feet tall so no one’s asking me.
Jordan Hawkins literally had the same type of freshman year.

The disbelief you all have in player development is beyond me man. Reibe would’ve been fine.

I mean there was no way he was playing big minutes over Tarris Reed. Tarris graduating obviously opens up a lot of minutes.
Exactly! He had to know, coming in, that he would be backing up Reed, so his job was to learn and get ready for next year.

As far as minutes down the stretch, he played his way into a diminished role. Other than giving Reed a rest, he contributed very little in terms of defense, offense, or rebounding.

He may thrive elsewhere, but if he was unhappy with playing time, I just don’t get it.

.-.
I'm not surprised on this one. Obviously we can't discuss this stuff before it happens, but he really doesn't fit with our style. He's a super finesse big man who isn't a rim protector or a great rebounder.

Plenty have people have commented about this when discussing our 26-27 roster; Reibe couldn't be the starting 5 if we have championship aspirations and there's no way he was coming back for a bench role.
I agree but I thought he could be a part of a two headed monster at big like we've done all these other years with a close to 20 minute split with a big physical athlete we brought in from the portal. It seems pretty clear Reibe didn't want that and wasn't even happy about his playing time this year despite having a senior beast at center ahead of him.

He’s a former 5* AA. Hes going to start for another P5 just fine.

Pretty disappointing. If we don’t get him and Silas back it’s a pretty big blow to the continuity we like to have for next season.
Just because he is that there have been other 5* busts before. By step down I mean still in the power 5 but maybe a USC, Cal, Minnesota or Arizona State so he can get the starting minutes he thinks he deserves.

Worth noting. Hurley and his staff have had end of season debriefs with all the players, told them what is expected in off-season and what role the staff is projecting for next season.
Don't forget there was also a conversation around NIL.

That's unfortunate Reibe's going to transfer to a mid major, lead that team to a sweet 16 and play himself into the NBA.

Wish he stayed, wish him well. Whoever gets him will be very happy

Yeah, and if Braylon is really going to get the rumored 4 Million and our new guys from the portal getting big money there might just not been enough money to keep Reibe around.

I was the one who said he should come back for another year and develop.A big part of the decision was probably what Hurley said to him. He’s the one entering the portal.

Do you think any incoming center (or two) is going to be cheaper? That would mean we are downgrading. This doesn't apply at all.
This isn't a money thing - it's a staff doesn't think he's good enough to start yet thing.

No I'm saying if we give 2-3 Million to a proven Center, 2-3 Million to a PF and 4 Million to Braylon we might not have enough money to give Reibe and also make sure others stay. I agree the staff probably saw him as more of a developmental center in their system while he thought he should start next year and get higher NIL money to do it.

Depending on who we brought in at PF, he could even play alongside another 5 as the 4. Half the elite 8 teams seemed to employ two guys 6'11" or bigger. So I think he clearly would have played quite a bit. Maybe he wanted to be featured. Who knows?

For the thousandth time, development is not binary. It is not an on/off switch and the options aren’t either a) develop to 100% of their potential immediately or b) don’t develop at all. Clearly Hurley and Co. disagree with your assessment based on the news today and who they’re targeting in the portal. That should be telling.

If he goes to BC he should have his head examined.
If Luke Murray coached the bigs here, and we preferred traditional rim-protecting, rebounding, back to the basket bigs, you're 100% right!

This wasn’t rumored. It was said by Hurley in a postgame presser in late January. I’ll have to find the game. I’m paraphrasing, but Dan said that Reibe’s camp needs to trust the process a bit more, and he referenced Clingan’s two-year journey and how he backed up Adama his freshman year. After that presser, I had a feeling Reibe was gone after this season.
Yup, been biting my tongue to say nothing. Hope his “handlers” know what’s best for him.

Coach Calhoun made a comment during one of our games that he talked to Dan about giving his young big more minutes.
Someone should read this post to Justin Brown and get his reaction on video.

Gosh darnnit. I was really high on Reibe. I thought he’d make a big leap in year 2. He clearly has a high ceiling, just needs more minutes, strength, and coaching. He was in line for 20-25 minutes a game next season. Not a fan of him departing

I think he will end up being a good offensive player, but he wasn’t a good fit for the defensive system Hurley likes to run. He is a below average rebounder and he never looked quick/fast enough to hedge.
Just a bad fit in the HH defense we run.

I'd have been happy to have him back, but literally every team is dealing with this to some degree. No way we would be immune
Most of the college basketball rosters hit the portal, some are going to sting a bit.

Hines averaged 6ppg on a bad seton hall team. I know he can block shots, but it doesn’t seem like he has much of an offensive game. I don’t get why he’s our top C target
While only playing 18 minutes a game. We don’t need a lot of scoring from the center position. We badly need rim protection and an interior post presence. We have a gazillion shooters and scorers outside but few that can stop dribble penetration.

His transfer may have little to do with Hurley or playing time. It may have everything with getting mugged every night in the Big East. Who wants a forty minute wrestling match when he can go to a nicer climate and play in a league where he can develop his skills unmolested. Reibe is a very good player and a tremendous loss. Maybe, he did not like the high hedge? Frankly, I wonder why anyone who has options would chose to be beaten up while playing hoops. Reibe's game is finesse not wrestling.

Eh if part of the tradeoff for his lack of minutes was Tarris getting 21 and 13 in the NCAAT I'm fine with that
Hell, in a couple of games, he had two first half fouls before Reed could get comfortable on the bench.
