Reed needs to start

Agreed. I get that Hurley wants to be loyal to Johnson but with a critical run of games coming up, the better player needs to start and get a bulk of the minutes at the 5.
Johnson did play great D today but I agree.

If SJ commits a couple fouls against Baylor quickly, which is a good possibility, then TR will get the bulk of the minutes by default. But, yeah i agree.

We can’t afford to keep starting slow against good teams. Johnson’s fouling is a big part of that. Reed has earned the starting spot, left no doubt whatsoever. If he fails as the starter, you can always go back to Johnson later.

We all agree.
Again, my theory is Dan is training Samson to be a reliable backup.
Until tonight, he hasn't been, with 3.7 fouls during his average 18 minutes--on thin ice.
Trained to foul less, he can be available when Dan needs him.
Also, Dan is perhaps overly fond of the alley-oop, which "pressures the defense."

Don't worry, Reed will get in at the 18:52 mark of the Baylor game when Johnson picks up his second foul.

Reed’s better.

Not sure what the issue is; Samson is remarkably effective as a back up - who else has a near seven foot pogo stick coming off the bench?

But Reed is still the better player.

Now, someone tell both of them to stop fouling

The whole concept of waiting for your better backup to come in after your starter goes into expected early foul trouble rings of Ringling Brothers strategically.

There are certainly games to say that we shouldn't start Johnson, but today was not one of them.

He was extremely disruptive defensively and a weapon over the top offensively. We were up 18-4 when he checked out after his first shift.

We played a High School team lmao
Yep but he still has his moments even against godo competition. The problem is he isn't too consistent with the stuff he does good and ionly with stuff he does bad like fouling too much.

It's a team we should beat by 75. It's ridiculous that Reed isn't starting over Samson, he should start his best players.

Hurley is loyal to a fault with players. He’s been like that since he’s gotten here. He takes forever to play the better players

Johnson is a much better defender. Reed is a much better rebounder. Reed is better scoring in the paint. Johnson is better on pick and roll and lobs. Our team is woefully challenged defensively, which is why I think Dan starts Johnson.

That was the worst of the 4 division 5 teams we played
And Mahaney still could not guard his man and neither could Solo. Glad they won but it really means nothing. I missed the first half last night rewatched the whole game this morning. Wow those two are so bad defensively it is hard to believe one of them is in his second year with this program. I really don’t see either of them improving their defense. Mahaney is who he is and Solo just does not understand how to position himself when the ball is on the other side of the court.

While this is a team-wide problem, Reed is playing poorly defensively.

Here is the starting lineup for UMES:
6'8" 240
6'8" 195
6'6" 195
6'5" 190
6'0" 165

I would hope SJ would be able to play well on defense against this sized lineup. His defensive problems are handling big physical players. And, he is not a good rebounder and when the other starters aren't good rebounders or defenders, it is a problem.

Have to disagree on better defender. Is he more mobile yea that’s it. He over extends his hedges a ton leaving everyone scrambling to find open people thereafter. He blocks a few shots but loses a ton of rebounds by trying to block shots he shouldn’t worry about. He can’t defend on the block anyone strong while Reed is harder to move. Since defensive rebounding is a result of defense and where you are, I take Reed all day in this. Although he needs to stay on his feet when backed in, don’t jump to block shots stay straight up.

It’s amazing to me Reed isn’t getting 25-15 of the minutes and starting it’s baffling. Congrats great game against UMES where were you for 3 games against real competition? 5 rebounds in well over 60 minutes is beyond horrendous for any 6’10 individual. He’s a back up let’s get him back there.

Yeah I think you've got the reason. Johnson is the better weakside rim protector. We start Ball and McNeeley, who are poor defenders and get blown by a lot. Whereas the backups only really have Mahaney as a weak on-ball defender. So Johnson's rim protection impact is greater with the starting group.
