No surprise, but the Cuse AD announced Red Autry will be back next year for his 3rd season. Rumor is a lot of this is the fact that he has a good recruiting class coming in, including Melo's kid. Would think next year is a make or break year for him. Rumor also is Cuse is really behind with NIL.

Adrian will be back next year," Wildhack said during a local radio appearance on ESPN101 Radio in Syracuse. "But that comes with expectations."Autry has two ESPN 100 recruits: Sadiq White and Kiyan Anthony. They are coming to the program this fall.

I’m a Carmelo Anthony fan and wish the best for his son but a program expecting the #36 ranked recruit to come in and turn it around is delusional, particularly in the transfer portal era. Such unrealistic expectations when paired with his dad’s legacy

As Rutgers illustrates, even bringing in two lottery picks including the #1 or 2 pick can't turn a bad program around. Rutgers is 14-16 and in 15th place in the Big 10. That's not a typo. 15th....

So, here’s the thing.

He’s not a very good coach right now. Maybe he gets better, but right now, it’s an issue. Substitutions are occasionally wild and I don’t know why he let Starling go 1-10 from three the other night.

That said, he deserves another year. He has a good class coming in and nothing happened this year that said definitively that he cannot become a good coach. I’m not betting on it, but he deserves a third year.

As for NIL, every losing fan base decides that NIL is their issue. Maybe. Or maybe you just paid the wrong players.

I don’t watch cuse basketball enough to have an opinion on whether Red will be a good coach. I do watch enough to know he isn’t a good coach now. Bringing him back isn’t going to change much for them. They haven’t made the tourney in years and have a gross losing record in a very weak ACC. Don’t really care what they do but if that was us, I’d certainly be screaming to go in a new direction.

I generally support giving guys 3 years to show progress but being a bottom feeder of the worst high major conference in basketball is probably worth considering an exception to that rule

This must be the worst season since pre-Boeheim?

I think any coach is hamstrung at Syracuse, NIL or not. They've been irrelevant for so long and their location is not attractive to one and done or two and dine players.

I tend to agree - the Dome had it's allure back in the day, but that shine has worn off, especially as programs are choosing to build small arenas to create the more intimate environment (Baylor, etc). They had the NYC pipeline, which really doesn't exist anymore. It feels like their brand is long gone at this point. Maybe if they grab the next young scrappy coach, they can lift themselves up (like the guy at Ville), which is not a Boeheim guy like Red. Does this formula every work? The guy at Arkansas St would be a really nice fit as a local product.

Disagree, they got stuck because Boeheim stayed too long and then they made the dreaded decision to hire a former player which almost never works out. A top coach would turn around Cuse in a hurry.

They had a potential 1 and done 5* freshman on the roster (Freeman) along with a recent 5* recruit (Starling).

Together they beat Le Moyne by 4 points, the worst Colgate team in 8 years by 2, and went to double OT and Starling had to play 49 minutes to eke out a win against 200+ Youngstown St. I'm not cherry picking, those were the first 3 games of the season. Then they lost 2 games against high majors, and then trailed Cornell by 11 before coming back to win.

Starling got hurt, and when he came back Freeman got hurt. Filtering to when both guys were healthy, Syracuse ranked 166th on Torvik.

Talent isn't the problem on the roster, nor experience. They had another top 60 freshman in the class. They had a homegrown junior, a 5th year high major transfer, a junior who begun under Self at Kansas, 3 mercenary senior transfers for experience.

The guy can't coach. The team got worse this year than last. They lost to both Virginia Tech and Miami and needed 3OT to beat BC. If you're a new coach and I'm the AD and you go from bad to worse in your 2nd year, you're out. Could he improve over time? Sure. There is 0 reason for a program like Syracuse to be the place where a bad coach learns to be a good one. They're a formerly proud program. Hire a coach that is already good. It's not rocket science.

Kiyan wants to play for Syracuse. You're telling me there's no coaches that are both good they can hire and that he would like? Come on now.

This is right. We can and should revel in their misery, but they'll find someone who will get them back to relevance.

The football program is up under a high-quality coach (who seems destined for better places) and the basketball program is down under a place holder. Where is your NIL dollar going?

It’s the right call. He’s got a good class coming in so see what he can do with a third year. He hasn’t been good so far but they’ve also been wildly untalented.

The other consideration is who they could even get if they moved on. We’ve seen in this cycle that NIL has thrown everything for a loop with coaching changes. Even top programs were getting turned down by established coaches at “lesser programs” left and right. I don’t see any way Cuse lands an established coach. They either have to settle for a retread or a mid-major type, which comes with a lot of risk.
