Recently watched movies 2025

The Last Bus. Apple+. Bad title, great movie. Matthew McConaughey is a school bus driver in Northern California. He’s in a rough patch, with an invalid mom and 15 year old son who hates that he’s in the boonies of Paradise, CA. This is based on a true story of the Camp Fire and it’s the most gripping, horrifying and realistic disaster movie I have ever seen. The tension, the colors, the darkness and overall sense of realism is incredible. Great performances, emotional and well done. This might be the best movie of 2025.

I’ve been through hurricanes, tornadoes (very scary) a minor earthquake and floods, but only once a forest fire and it was the scariest of all.

Thanks for that review. I've passed by the thumbnail countless times because of the title. Didn't even read the description. Will definitely watch now.

Also, for clarity, it's "The Lost Bus". It is gripping. I'd like to see how it was filmed because it had to use a ton of news footage. Assuming CGI was used in the parts where the bus was surrounded by fire and MM had to drive thru it, the effects were amazing realistic. Same for when tracking the bus through traffic while everything is on fire.

Violent Night (2022)

This movie is great. David Harbour slays as Santa Claus who struggles through another trip around the world. Hee is ha ing trouble at home with Mrs Claus. He drinks along the way.

This movie has it all.

A cute kid who believes in Santa. A realistic battle-tested Santa. Blood. Bones cracking. Blood spatter.

Watch this one.
 
Red One. Another modern Santa Claus Movie. JK Simmons is an excellent buff Santa Claus. The Rock is head of his security. Chris Evans a criminal of sorts who is caught up in a plot to kidnap Santa. Kiernan Shipka is a Christmas Witch and the main baddie. Lucy Liu and others. This is fun. You can just tell these folks had fun making this.
 
Not sure of people's opinions on foreign films, but Sentimental Value was really great. Mostly in Norwegian, with some English featuring Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve (who is phenomenal). If you are in the mood for a really well done drama that can pull a tear or two check it out in theaters or should be on streaming in a couple of weeks. One of my favorite more serious movies of the year along with Sorry, Baby.

What are the rules of this standard? For example, Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Is it creepy to like that scene at my age, or is it appropriate since she is actually quite a bit older than me in real life?

Watched Jay Kelly (Netflix) last night. Was wondering how a Clooney/Sandler combo would work. The storyline smacked of a Clooney vanity project. The acting was decent enough and there are a lot of stars involved playing the various enablers who basically ride Clooney's acting to successful careers of their own until they've had enough. In the end, neither lead comes off as much more than all words, no action.

Quit halfway through. Noah Bombach (sp?) is the most overrated filmmaker of his generation.
 
Watched "Merv" last night, new on Amazon. Rom com with a couple that breaks up, have joint custody of their dog, who is depressed due to the break up. Stars Zooey Dechanel and Charlie Cox. Was okay, a bit silly, then toward the end it got more serious and heartfelt. Enjoyed it overall. Zooey toned down her "New Girl"/adorkable routine a bit. The dog stole the movie of course.
 
"Wake Up Dead Man," the latest in the Knives Out series just hit Netlfix. Yikes. I hated it. None of the humor or cleverness of 1 and 2, and most glaring was none of the fun. It was just long and dreary. The characters really weren't interesting. This was a huge miss.
 
Wake Up Dead Man. I disagree with the guy above me, lol. I think this was the best Knives Out movie yet. Mostly because O’Connor was an excellent lead. And Glenn Close blew me away. Some of the supporting cast was wasted though. And Jeremy Renner was poor. But I liked it. Solid movie.

Interstellar (2014) - A friend recommended this one to me so I watched it this weekend. 3 hours long was a bit much and I had a hard time with them zipping all over space like George Jetson, but it made me think when it was over. Not sure it was my cup of tea, but I am still glad I watched it.

I wanted to like it, but what seemed a fun angle on a Christmas movie devolved into an overly complicated mess.

I think the guy who had the most fun was Krampus.

I found the opening 5-10 minutes very humorous. I had no idea who O'Connor was, so I spent that time wondering who cast Steve Young in a lead role, and who knew he was this good.

Krampus and the Winter Witch were way better characters than either of the supposed leads.
 
Watched F1 (Netflix) last night. It was fine as a racing movie, lots of good racing shots. I knew it was an expensive sport, but had no idea of all the technology involved. But throughout the racing scenes, one of my pet peeves about sports movies kept coming up - the announcer constantly talking about every little move a guy in the middle of the pack is making when we pretty much know 98% of live commentary is on the leaders. It got irksome.

Saw it. That is basically it. Mildly entertaining. Billy Crudup, who seems to be good in everything, was very good in this. He should have had a bigger part.
 
Started watching Spinal Tap II: The End Continues Saturday evening. Less than ten minutes in I decided to move on, but after hearing the devastating news on Marty DeBergi (the late, great Rob Reiner), I decided I owed the movie another shot.

I won't spoil anything. There were quite a few cameos (this had been publicized for a while), many of the old gags were repeatedly referenced (which was to be expected), some parts were quite humorous but more were just lame or old and stale. It's worth the time invested on TV if it doesn't cost much but it wasn't close to the original.

Agree, it was not a good movie. Gratuitous hated of religion is never really funny or interesting but the stuff from Daniel Craig's character was simply insulting. It did the worst thing a movie can do, it was boring.
