Being true to comic only matters to the people who are familiar with the series, but I agree, that's a core audience.Being true to the comic is the first most important imperative of "good" superhero movies. Marvel comics always had heroes with human flaws. DC didn't. In the comics, SpiderMan often saw himself as a loser. In the comics, Stark was a irresponsible drunk searching for purpose. To me, that is why the Marvel movies succeeded where the DC world had trouble.
Somehow, the film has to make us care about the character. I agree that's always been an issue with Superman, who is essentially invulnerable except for magic and various colored kryptonite. I suspect that's why they had him getting the crap beat out of him in the most recent movie, to create a sense of vulnerability.
